The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub, Jedburgh
First topic message reminder :
Sláinte and welcome to the Virtual Rugby Pub - a place where you can come in for a sly beverage and discuss whatever's on your mind, or just eavesdrop on the regulars if you fancy a break from all the rugby chat.
The Pub has made it's way to Jedburgh, home of Greig Laidlaw who kicked the winning points for Scotland on Tuesday night.
The only rule in this pub is one of mutual respect for everyone in it, oh and no tampering with the pictures of all of the June Internationals debutants hanging over the bar.

Rava - I thought he was today and has been for Ireland for a while. He needs to lose 1/2 stone to a stone, just off the pace at this level for me. You should try POM there I reckon
ooooh erugh, they just re-played the Scott Williams and Australia 2 head clash. Ychafi!

He really has achieved consistency of perfomance Dreamer. Never had it before, but it proves that players need to know they are No.1 for their country and to give them time to grow into it.
He will need to keep doing it. Next season he will be under pressure from Strauss. And Cronin.
That what I always wanted. 2 or 3 class players for every position fighting like Hell to take the spot. Its how the Kiwis rock. Massive competition, means seamless changes of personnel and a brilliant side keeps on flowing.
EDIT: Plus the fact that they are twice as powerful, skilful and fast - by DNA. Its just needs feeding.
That's whats wrong with Heaslip now and in the past - R Kearney and ROG. No realistic competition for the spot. If Ferris was fit, I'd have him at 6 and SOB at 8. But we need to find a proper 7.

Ah Gibbo you nailed it my friend.
We are a small Nation with three decent Clubs in an average league (no diss to Connacht). We punch above our weight most of the time but we are too obsessed with club success and that stunts us on the International front.
Wales are the epitome of a Nation who see success at International level being more important than Club success.

Exactly.
We should have got marrried darlin. We'd never row. It would be pure sex, love and agreement all the way. Sounds like bliss.

Apparently the Aus 10 today is fifth choice!! Jeez he would be fighting Sexton for the Ireland 10 jersey. We do not have any depth to our squad unfortunately. That was also so apparent last night in the U20 game against England.

The Finns are huge powerful specimens. Like white AB's. They'd be brilliant at it, given the time and commitment.
Its really growing in Germany too, so watch out. A whole host of my son's Kraut friends play rugby at club level, in NL and Germany. Mad and lovely big feicers. Just great to watch a game with.
They got him into rugby. Not so much me.

Sorry Dreamer. Just saw this.
Yes there was. Feeellllllllllllllliiiipeeeeeeeeeeee!
Italy fully expected to beat them. Argentina had a new side led by old-hands Contepomi and Roncerro.
Things looking really good for the future of Argentinian Rugby. Thats grand. Upset for the Italians. Hope they grow from it too.

Can we have a gang of anti-cliche busters in this place? I have one big question here on Dan Lydiate. The Welsh coo (or is it moo? That was a farmer joke. Oh no he didn't! Yes I did girlfriend) over him for doing 'the unseen work'. How can you know he does the unseen work if you can't see it?
Also how are Ireland overachieving? There's one nation that massively overachieves- those bloody Aussies. For all our talk of rugby being a hugely minority sport here, its even more a minority sport in Australia.

Cream craicered. Wot a blwdi day! The 'Diff in the morning for the Ireland & Wales games, London for The England game - plus a load of Toulousain in the Thornbury for the T14 final (on the other screen).
Despite the results, that was a great rugby day.
Win or lose, fan wise, NH rugby rocks and always feicen will.

Pint for Hookie
Apparantly Donnacha O'Callaghan does a lot of unseen work too...which is just as well because the work he does do isn't that great.... it's hard to prove a negative.... I'm sort of a Lydiate 'agnostic' I suppose....
When Richard Hill did unseen work it was a lot more noticeable...

Tell you what....those AB's are some side...amazing. Ireland made life easy for them but flip you just have to hold your hands up at the quality they have and the rugby they play.
It is mindblowing at times... they are on a different planet to the rest of us .

Just a quick wee post while I nip outside here for a breath of smoky air. Holland getting beat? I haven't read back so Gibbo what's the verdict? From what we saw both Germany, Holland and Portugal had excellent attacking oppertunities. What a tough group. Right back inside. Chow.

I'll tell you what annoyed me the most today more than any other comment. Some commentator saying that Ireland need to improve their offloading 'like the Sonny Bill Williams's of this world'. Firstly, I hate when sports commentators pluralise people names. it drives me insane. Secondly, all I could think was fook me mate, there's two of them? Give us a chance sunshine.

... I though we did really well against Sonny Bill actually... we just couldn't deal with NZ in the wider channels though and that was as much down to our defensive frailties there as it was to NZ's outstanding quality out wide..... you live and learn I suppose... well not sure about the learning part...

If only McFadden and Zebo could tackle on the field as well as Heaslip has been tackling abrakebabras all season. There is some debate as who ate all the pies in this Irish side. The main suspects were Mike Ross and Declan Fitzpatrick. Declan Kidney has a right wee keg on him too. Gert Small is almost a beautiful punned name, you know like Gerth Small. That said one should't encourage cheap Winkle gags.

Ahhh I've no compaints with heaslip... I thought the pack lacked leadership, the restarts were a shambles without O'Connell.
McFadden and Zebo are poor defenders, we knew that before the game...in truth Kearney isn't the best either.... but you have to go back to the failure to keep possession and the lack of direction, composure and invention in attack... defence is a red herring really, you can't defend against these guys and hope to win.
Individually we were pretty good bar one or two players... as a team we just didn't function again.

It's nice of you see things that way H & H but maybe it's something we say when we're struggling.
In reality, rugby has a long history here plus there is the very strong presence of the other code (RL) which is very similar in so many ways. Lots of skills, strategies, tactics and moves are applicable to both games.
So the tip of our rugby iceberg is naturally of a high quality... the hidden base below (all age groups playing rugby and/or the closely related game) is very sound indeed and quite widespread in the rugby playing states.
Perhaps that's why it feels even more painful when we lose!

Gibbo, Ireland don't need a proper 7. The breakdown is not an area where we struggle. Also Zebo isn't that poor a defender, for Munster he saved 3 certain tries with is good tackling. He struggles with positioning but tackling isn't a huge concern, the only big one I remember him missing was on Henderson in Thomond park
Morning all. Massive day ofsport, Cork V Kerry in the GAA then Ireland. Speaking of which "Shameless Plug"

McFadden looked like a scared little girl on defence, he kept running himself out of position not to tackle.

That's McFadden in defence pretty much all the time. He has pretty poor positioning and is not a great tackler.
