The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub, Jedburgh
First topic message reminder :
Sláinte and welcome to the Virtual Rugby Pub - a place where you can come in for a sly beverage and discuss whatever's on your mind, or just eavesdrop on the regulars if you fancy a break from all the rugby chat.
The Pub has made it's way to Jedburgh, home of Greig Laidlaw who kicked the winning points for Scotland on Tuesday night.
The only rule in this pub is one of mutual respect for everyone in it, oh and no tampering with the pictures of all of the June Internationals debutants hanging over the bar.

Has the footy finished yet?
Is it safe for a rugby fan to venture back in?
Much more to come from SA, NZ and Wales this weekend I feel. England are on a steep learning curve in SA and I hope Lancaster realises that he has to change something between 10, 12 and 13 to threaten more when we get our mitts on the ball. Huge disappointment with our creativity (again).
Ireland need to close down that NZ backline rather than just watch them do their stuff. The Irish looked mesmerised every time NZ attacked them (memories of the winning play against Wales in the 6N).
Wales will be far better this weekend I feel. I have never seen a defence coached by Shaun Edwards defend so poorly around the fringes.
Scotland to play through their forwards against Samoa and win that one.

The BBC were ignoring the HEC along with the rest of the british press since there was no English involvement past the quarters.

The beeb camera men aren't doing a good job finding any blonde Swedish babes in the crowd. Very dissapointing.

Nah. There'll be a big meeting, the English and French will put up a list of stuff they want, backed up by their cashflow generation, the Celts and Italy will concede ground on one or 2 things and hold on others, based on their voting majority, and it'll all blow over.
Ozzie, I've voted twice, will try a 3rd on the mobile in the morning. Though Mrs O is a long way ahead, nice work on vote generation.

I'm guessing that the english teams had no part to play in 1999? I was a non-believer back then. Hadn't watched a rugby game.

The HEC could survive England leaving. But if France went too you're left with a Rabo Cup tournament - and a pittance in TV money.

The Beeb don't have TV access rights to the HC, and have rarely covered it; aside from the highlights package that Sky allow them. (Edit) And that is usually limited to a handful of important tries.
The English papers that make the effort to report on any rugby (not many) had very good articles on the latter stages of the HC.
I've still got a copy of The Rugby Paper (English biased) which had 4-5 pages devoted to it, plus an excellent preview of the Rabo final.
As, sorry bud; I thought Scotland had Samoa next up. That will teach me to believe what some Wasps fans were saying in The Thornbury at the weekend.
Beverages had been partaken of.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub, Jedburgh
Once the Beeb lose the TV rights to an ever increasing number of sports, they just basically stop reporting on it in any depth. The club rugby on Teletext is just limited to a page of match report and another with the scores, and they often c*ck that up.
You won't get much rugby coverage in the 'red tops' - that's not their meerkat. The Telegraph (esp) and The Times are pretty good. The Guardian and Independent seem to view rugby as an 'elitist' sport, which does not appeal to their left wing and liberal readership.
I agree that rugby is not covered very well in the mainstream English media, which is why I will hunt down TRP every Sunday (not many outlets though).

Sorry Hound, that is not so. The Times is rubbish at reporting rugby. A few column inches on the HEC final; today 2 stories on England v SA; one short piece on Wales v Aus; nothing earlier in the week abotu Scotland v Aus; nothing about the JWC. AND they do a special su[pplement on wendyball every Monday and STILL have coverage in the main part of the paper (about 3 or 4 pages today). Never read the Torygraph (does not appeal to my left wing / liberal tendencies ) but tyey have had a reputation for good sports coverage.

Welcome Jen, I'm liking your contribution to the "Wumming thread" on the soccer board. Judging from the google search I did they are some kind of butter mint? Not too shabby. Also in the last year has anyone noticed there is a ridiculous rise in sweet shops or retro sweet shops?
Thank you for your kind welcome, Thomond. I've enjoyed looking round this rugby board and hoping to ease myself into the flow of the conversation.
Yes, the Hawick Balls are a little minty and are probably bad for my teeth, but a good mouthrinse with beer in the bar after the game will put that to rights..!!
Loving the Dew Drop Inn thread. Very friendly chat and not as confrontational as the "round ball game" site. I think I prefer it here.
It's nice to meet all you folks and I'm looking forward to plenty of chat and (friendly) banter in the future.

The sad demise of Rugby Special on the BBC was one of those consequences of the Sky Revolution that affected the average fan's TV access to club rugby. Of course, everybody watched the 5N (as was) matches that were shown live on Saturday afternoons in the Beeb's heyday of sports coverage, but the Sunday tea time slot, of an hour's club rugby was just enough to inform and entertain. I liked Chris Rey as a presenter much more than John Inverdale, although the latter has to be admired for nowadays being able to sit through 80 minutes of a match next to Jonathan Davies without succumbing to the urge to punch his smug little head.
Back when video recorders were cool, I burned off a number of tapes of matches shown on rugby special and since then have transferred them to DVD. They're a bit grainy, but still watchable. Ahhh, nostalgia... I remember it well..!!
I don't have enough posts on this site yet, to post URL's, but if you Google "The Rugby Paper", you'll be able to subscribe if you so wish. Enjoy.

Hi Jennifer... nice to meet you and welcome back Munsty. I hope you had a wonderful time in Africa and mission was successful!
Getting a little nervous before the game now. I feel Japan is about to give us a lesson in football.
Oh, and the other game is on in Canberra too... both start in a few hours.

More white than grey, Glas.
It's come a long way in only 80 years... the last 10 especially. I don't mind the place but prefer living here. Some very nice farmland around that area.
I was chatting to mate who lives not so far from Canberra. He says it was sunny but cool today.
Unlike here. It has not stopped raining for 3 days or so.
