The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub, Christchurch
Kia ora and welcome to the Virtual Rugby Pub - a place where you can come in for a sly beverage and discuss whatever's on your mind, or just eavesdrop on the regulars if you fancy a break from all the rugby chat.
The Pub has made it's way to Christchurch, as it prepares to host its first test match in over 2 years. While reconstruction continues post-earthquake there's plenty of vacant lots for the pub to "occupy".
The only rule in this pub is one of mutual respect for everyone in it, oh and no tampering with the pictures of Llanelli legend Nigel Davies, and local heroes Richie McCaw and Dan Carter.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub, Christchurch
Nice to have a pub in Christchurch.
Did I ever tell you I impaled my foot as a kid on a building site off Office Road, Kiwi?
My Gran lived next door and us 'cuz-broz'; after tiring from playing tackle rugby (we all did full live commentary as we played) in this freezing back yard with rose bushes down the sidelines... we ventured over the fence to "inspect the works".
I jumped down off a wall on to a piece of wood but it flipped as I jumped and my left foot went right on a nail. I just pulled my foot up carefully... it did hurt... but I didn't panic. Calmy went and got a tetanus shot and it healed up in about a month.
Fond memories of ChCh.

And Office Rd is only a block from Rugby St LB. I played a fair bit of cricket at Elmwood Park near there over the years too.

My cousin might be moving to Christchurch, they are moving to NZ. Her hubby is a Quantity Surveyor and well there are plenty of jobs there. His bro lives in NZ working for NZ telecom or something I think. It sounds a lot like working in Google with the relaxed atmosphere!

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub, Christchurch
Notch, I find it a bit weird, I know a lot of us "southerners" who wish Northern Ireland well any time they are on TV. I remember screaming my head off when they beat England and Spain a few years back. But N.I. people don't seem to feel the same. A shame really.
Sorry I'm only replying to this now but Thomond; its WAY more complicated than that.
Hundreds of thousands of Northern Irish fans support the Republic of Ireland; almost all Catholics who- like James McLean- have grown up seeing the Northern Ireland team as associated with the 'other side' and/or unwelcoming to Catholic players and supporters. There will be loads of them in Poland/Ukraine and there are so many in Belfast that they had the Croatia game on the big screen for them outside the City Hall. Place was as packed out as it was for the 'British' Olympic torch the previous week. I have more friends who support the Republic as their first team in international football than those who support Northern Ireland.
BUT the fact so many people support the Republic, coupled with the fact that every single footballer in Northern Ireland is eligible to play for the Republic of Ireland, means that NI fans see the Republic of Ireland team as a genuine threat to the future of Northern Ireland as a footballing nation. The question of a United Ireland may be a dead duck politically right now, but if Northern Ireland continue to plumb new depths whilst Ireland qualify for tournaments and quality players choose to play for the Republic over the North... suddenly a United Ireland football team is on the table. And thats what the Northern Ireland fans are afraid of, especially given rugby is getting more popular and rugby shows that a United Ireland team can work and, crucially, get widespread support from Protestants. Albeit the middle classes as opposed to the more loyalist working classes.
So there's a lot at stake for Northern Ireland fans, when you look at the big picture. As for me? I'm confused. In Northern Ireland, Catholics support the Republic of Ireland and Protestants support Northern Ireland. That, for me, is despicable. Sport should be about bringing people together.
There are only two moments of genuine ecstasy I've had supporting my 'team' in international football. The first was when Robbie Keane scored against Germany in the 2006 World Cup. The second was when David Healy scored the winner against England. I felt the same sense of pride, patriotism and belonging. I am both British and Irish, and my Irishness is not restricted to one small corner of this island. I will support Irish sportsmen. But the situation with the football teams is a mindfeic for me due to the sectarian undercurrent that surrounds it in NI and thats 99% of the reason I dislike the sport.

That was 2002 I oversimplified it a bit. A fair amount of southerners seem to wish NI well though which probably would have been unheard of about 20/30 years ago. Good to see.

Maybe so! Everyone has very different and unique views on it. Those are mine. I can only hope if those views are unfair or biased someone more objective than I will take it upon themselves to educate me. I'm trying to always be open to new ideas because I wasn't ever before.
Apart about Ulster Rugby. My views on that are set in stone

Doh! It was indeed, no idea why I typed 2006. It is great, yes. But the delicate thing is that it only takes a very small minority of idiots to damage how a team and a nation is perceived abroad. Like NI fans with Neil Lennon in the past (and present) or England football hooligans.

You bet. One of saddest things is seeing this tiny war memorial (still about 12 people!) in Bluff... southernmost point before Stewart Is. You're thinking... how much further away can you get from blydi Flanders or wherever!
I've got this great photo of a seagull posing one of those multi-city directional signs. You can see it clearly: <--New York 15,500 km .... Antarctica 2500 km -->

Actually Notch you have misrepresented the facts quite a bit in your statement and have done so on this subject many times.
If you are giving your views then fair enough but don't make statements that are factually incorrect.

Hi folks. Well good luck to all in their HC Pools. I think some teams are going to get a shock going to Sandy Park, and will find out what a tough place it is to play at.
Sale would be my dark horses next season and are capable of upsetting teams seeded above them. Quins were my dark horses last year and they did beat Toulouse away.
Talking of the French, I tried to engage some of my French colleagues in a discussion about the Pools over lunchtime. They didn't even know that the Pool draw was taking place today. In fact they were distinctly underwhelmed and viewed the HC as a distraction from the T14. It has to be said that none of them are Toulouse or ASM fans though.
Anyway, I'm off to the Wasps Nest in Marylebone in a bit for the SA v England JWC game. I see that Saracens former player Glen Jackson is refereeing that. Well done Glen on a fairly steep rise up the refereeing rankings having only retired as a player two seasons ago

Fair enough. If you can point out the statements that are factually incorrect I will take them into consideration for the future
That said, the above is my opinion. I don't think I stated a single objective fact. Just a collection of my own perceptions about the issue. But look I'd fairly be a hypocrite if I wasn't open to correction and would actually welcome your views.

This one will do: -
In Northern Ireland, Catholics support the Republic of Ireland and Protestants support Northern Ireland. That, for me, is despicable.
Statements like that get read by people who don't know the real truth and therefore go away with misconceptions. You make a statement which is incorrect and use the word despicable (Deserving hatred and contempt) Is that really how you feel?
All my Catholic friends support Northern Ireland. We all hope the Republic of Ireland do well but we don't "support" them. Just the same as we hope the home nations of England, Scotland and Wales do well.

Yeah, look, thats a fair point reading it back. I suppose it varies hugely and whilst I personally acknowledge that, that statement reads like a gross oversimplification. Thats a very valid criticism. And- it actually portrays me in a very negative light. But because I could have written a lot more than I did and shown more of the nuances in the situation I was trying to get the point across quickly. It reads like I'm making a point about everyone in Northern Ireland. I'm actually making a point about my immediate social circle. I could beat myself up over that. Its such a ludicrous thing to do, born of haste and earnestness not malice, but unhelpful all the same. So I could have qualified it by saying;
"Amongst my friends in Belfast and people I've had as co-workers and fellow students, <the statement in question>"
And even qualified it further by saying 'the vast majority' in each case. That would have prevented that and been much more accurate projection of the situation. At the same time- none of the people I know from the Falls Road support Northern Ireland. No-one from around the Upper Newtownards Road where I grew up supported the Republic of Ireland and i didn't have to go to far to find people who would begrudge them every result.
I don't really have any idea about people who live outside Belfast, apart from people I've met who've moved to Belfast to work or study. In my age group these are overwhelming majority Catholic due to the NIPPLE effect in my generation. Northern Ireland Protestant People Leaving for England and Scotland. I imagine the countryside is more diverse but then, what on earth would a city boy know about that? I do feel like the situation you describe would be positively utopian in the more entrenched environment of Belfast but I didn't do enough to convey that that is the case elsewhere in the country. That was a colossal error of judgement on my part, and I'd like to thank you for bringing it to my attention.
So, in conclusion, I unreservedly apologise for any offence caused. Hopefully we can still be friends

That is the same for my friends rodders, a lot of them would support the republic. If he used the word majority, he would be right in my experience. I was brought up in a "mixed" school, and in a "mixed" estate. Something I am very thankful for to be honest.

Jayz Hound, I dunno why they put it on a pedestal over the HC. The TOP14 is really becoming a shoite league to watch. I used love it. Now? I'd rather have a wee lie down and watch Reality TV. And I hate Reality TV.The Amlin Final just compounded it for me. All that talent on show and it was a kick-fest.
P.S. Please say hello to the darling woman who runs the Wasps Nest for me. Washin. Her. Do. I would. And her lovely man of course.

Actually, next season could see Toulouse fail to qualify from that Pool. They are an aging team in many respects. I can't see Leicester being as poor again and the Os are on the up.

Be nice to see a changing of the guards all through the pools. Even have to accept that its far better if Leinster dont win it again this year. I want them to... but its not really good for the comp as a whole.
Just give us ONE more. In Dublin. Then we will go away.

Afternoon pub. Hope everyone's well and good. Feel a bit myself. Bit of a lousy day, but there we are. It's over. It all started so promising as well after a brilliant dream I had last night too. Pleased that Wales won their match. Of course I didn't see it at work, but I read that the O's boys did well...
I see the O's have got Toulouse, Treviso (again!) and Leicester (uh-gain!)...I'm not sure how we'll do next season. Of course I'd love to see them flourish this time, but I don't know...am a bit nervous about it all. See how it goes.
Ooh and well done Babi Bechgyn!! Show the grown-ups how it's done...

74-3 to baby Wales. 10 tries.
Aussie losing 24-7 to France with 2 to go. It looks like Argentina and France are through.
SA v England coming up. Not the best squad we have sent to this tournament but fingers crossed.
