The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub, Christchurch
First topic message reminder :
Kia ora and welcome to the Virtual Rugby Pub - a place where you can come in for a sly beverage and discuss whatever's on your mind, or just eavesdrop on the regulars if you fancy a break from all the rugby chat.
The Pub has made it's way to Christchurch, as it prepares to host its first test match in over 2 years. While reconstruction continues post-earthquake there's plenty of vacant lots for the pub to "occupy".
The only rule in this pub is one of mutual respect for everyone in it, oh and no tampering with the pictures of Llanelli legend Nigel Davies, and local heroes Richie McCaw and Dan Carter.

Argentina seem to be showing their gratitude to the IRB alright. If the Argies didn't put in the great wrok at underage they wouldn't be in the 4n championship.

Thanks for the welcome, Gibs. Nice to meet you.
Banter is good. Love it.
As for my Cornishness..... sorry to disappoint, but actually, I'm a Londoner by birth.... a native of that fine rugby stronghold of Blackheath. I moved to Cornwall after graduating from university, for love. (awwww bless).
But Kernow is good. They like their beer, they like their rugby and even if they don't have a stadium up to Premiership standard, the Pirates will still give anybody a run for their money.
And yes... Kernow is a country in it's own right. England begins on the far bank of the Tamar, and try telling anybody here different.

Really...? And FIFA endorse this..?
I find that most surprising.

Howya Jen? Whats yer poison?
Welcome to the Pub. There's always a row on here, when we're not shaagin each other that is.
Have I got that right?
Anyway, your not a Brit or a Paddy. Your'e Cornish. A country all of its own.
Weird peoples.

Glaws always welcome at the Mennaye, Gibs. I've been to Kingsholme myself several times. Loved the Shed atmosphere, and love the little pub outside the ground, next to the chip shop. The last time I visited, we were all enjoying ourselves in there post match and were quite disappointed when the coach turned up to take us home. We suggested to the driver that he might like to go round the block a few times and then come back for us, but he declined. Tut..!!
The driver did turn a blind eye to one or two tinnies being discreetly consumed on the way home though, so he still got a good tip.

Fair enough, have you ever seen trouble there? Might be more so when they come down south so. They caused 5,000 worth or damage to a pub in Dublin a few years back apparently.

Just joshing man. They were my team when I was a lot younger.
If I was to support anyone it would be my hometown team Ballymoney. Sadly we are in the third tier of Irish League football and given that the first tier is shoite, you can understand why I don't watch local soccer any more.

With the focus in England almost exclusively on the Premiership and Fizzy Lager Cup, non-prem clubs tend to get ignored, and yet, this is where the ethos of the true rugby club still mostly lies.

Basterd that ye are!
My uncle, Pa Daly, played football for Drums. So ja. I sold-out. I went Southside, cos Rovers had the sex. Like Leinster now. And Holland back then. Yes -even then. Ive never changed.

Rava, Gibbo, Thomond
Glentoran is my "club". VERY nominally
Not that I've been to a game in YEARS or follow the results. I genuinely couldn't care less. But when I was eight or nine my older brother was really into it and used to take me to The Oval with him. It was about 15/20 mins walk from where we used to live. I wouldn't have that much interest in rekindling it because I go to so much live rugby. I have more than my fill of live sport at Ravenhill of a weekend. And my bank statements would agree.

Yes, but you can find plenty of money for boozing.
Bore da.
Soccer below the top level is tedious I find, but I could watch a game of rugby at any level.

Talking of lower level football, the Swans are apparently going to give Michael Laudrup the vacant manager's post.

Laudrup was a fantastic player in his day. Don't know if he is a good coach though. I hope Swansea get someone who will continue in the style Rodgers had them playing.

That's my fear as well Rava. The best players rarely make the best coaches.
From Wiki:
"He subsequently took over as coach of Getafe, Madrid's third club, and continued his coaching career with notable success there. He brought the club comparative success in the Copa del Rey and UEFA Cup, and the team's attacking style brought plaudits."
I think I would prefer Holloway if they could get him, but they found Martinez and Rodgers, so who knows.

Morning everyone. I totally agree with this, thats exactly how I feel. I feel like I enjoy watching a genuinely bad game of rugby more than an ok game of football. When football is good it can be really amazing to watch- like Liverpool coming back from 3-0 down against Milan in the Champions League final etc.- but most of the time I can't really get into it.

So thank god its finally been proven, "modern art" protagonists have to be the most gullible naive, with their heads so far up their hole that they really will lap up anything these days. I've always said modern art was an absolute crock of shoite and this just proves it.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub, Christchurch
Hoog- you're right. It suffers from a very modern disease; high concept stuff, interesting to write about, but in practice what is it? An empty art gallery filled with pretentious wonks. I'd be keeping my wallet in my pocket. There are some genuinely great artists around doing great things right now, but nowhere near enough get the publicity over the chancers.
There's now a lot of stuff out there that is very much conceptual, but in no way affecting. Not beautiful or moving or shocking or challenging. Just self-indulgent and obscure. Thats sad. But there are still some things out there that are beautiful. Richard Wright, who won the Turner in 2009, has some lovely work. He makes these really intricate paintings with gold leaf amongst other things, which takes a great deal of time, craft and skill.
I can't help but think if more of the famous modern artists made things like that, people would take contemporary art more seriously. But thats not what gets the big commissions these days, the gallery space. Sad but true

Morning all.
I'm just about to leave for the stadium to see whether all the NSW talk for the last few weeks will show on the scoreboard... or to witness the 7th straight series win for Queensland.
Talk of the "cattle dog" (all-in brawl) yet again. Same as every year.
Miserable wet day again - probably Billy Slater & Co. will love that too.
Feeling a little edgy just now.... don't know why.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub, Christchurch
It reminds me of the time I went to the Hugh Lane Gallery in Dublin, and I was staring at this work when a museum employee comes over to me and asks what I thought about it.
Me:- Well I'm not really sure to be honest, is it supposed to represent something??
Museum Bloke: Well its a new work by a famous Irish artist (he told me his name but I can't remember now, but his work now goes for 100,000's) and when he unveiled it he told a story about what inspired the work. He remembers when he was about 5 he had a birthday party and most of the day is a blur. However he remember his mother calling his name and when he turned around he looked up into a tree and in that tree he saw a crow. And this work is his interpretation of that crow.
Me: Right mate I'm no ornithologist, but I know what a fricking crow looks like. And mate thats a BLUE square!!!!!

It was more the "all-in-brawl in a helicopter" stuff that has me confused Kiwi!

After a brief internet search I believe the artist was called Sean Scully

Ah. I think the organisers were dishing out some pun-ishment. With the slang term "cattle-dog" being used in the media to speculate about a brawl, they had the match ball delivered to half-way for kick-off via a helicopter landing and an actual Aussie cattle-dog getting out with the ball,

The market for art is insane though Hugh. VAST sums of money spent on some things that are just... what? There's a certain kind of gullible but incredibly rich "art-lover" who has everything money can buy except artistic and intellectual credibility, but that doesn't stop them trying. Or is it more just another vulgar way to show off their wealth?
I don't know, but modern art of questionable merit going for huge amounts of money is something which makes me feel uncomfortable. It's a strange world.

I just googled Sean Scully, and I actually quite like those paintings. Just wouldn't swallow the explanations that go with it. It may have some personal significance for him, but theres nothing in an abstract painting like that to suggest it to a viewer. And I don't know why the value is inflated so much, but I suppose thats the function of a free market. The only way to value a commodity is by what people are willing to pay for it.
But I could happily go to a gallery and look at them. On the other hand, I'm loving your patter about them. It's very funny, you've got a point there.
