The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub, Christchurch
First topic message reminder :
Kia ora and welcome to the Virtual Rugby Pub - a place where you can come in for a sly beverage and discuss whatever's on your mind, or just eavesdrop on the regulars if you fancy a break from all the rugby chat.
The Pub has made it's way to Christchurch, as it prepares to host its first test match in over 2 years. While reconstruction continues post-earthquake there's plenty of vacant lots for the pub to "occupy".
The only rule in this pub is one of mutual respect for everyone in it, oh and no tampering with the pictures of Llanelli legend Nigel Davies, and local heroes Richie McCaw and Dan Carter.

It's just all the cowpat that goes with it notch
"This image came to me while I was out trecking the wilderness of Montana, I reached the top of the mountain and the view just blew me away. It reminded me of my youth and the happy days I spent having a carefree life with no worries and I was just blessed to have a canvass and some paint with me so I could express my feelings with such ease"
No mate you just dipped your brush in a tin of paint and shook it at the paper that's why its just a load of blobs of paint.

I'd be keeping my wallet in my pocket. There are some genuinely great artists around doing great things right now, but nowhere near enough get the publicity over the chancers.
There's now a lot of stuff out there that is very much conceptual, but in no way affecting. Not beautiful or moving or shocking or challenging. Just self-indulgent and obscure. Thats sad. But there are still some things out there that are beautiful. Richard Wright, who won the Turner in 2009, has some lovely work. He makes these really intricate paintings with gold leaf amongst other things, which takes a great deal of time, craft and skill.

I can't help but think if more of the famous modern artists made things like that, people would take contemporary art more seriously. But thats not what gets the big commissions these days, the gallery space. Sad but true
I don't know art. But I know what I like. And I like that.

I don't know, but modern art of questionable merit going for huge amounts of money is something which makes me feel uncomfortable. It's a strange world.

Yeah totally, totally agree with you there. It's the feeling that artists think they are so profound and special that rubs people up the wrong way. There's such a thing as being humble about your craft as well. That's a virtue that can be seriously lacking, maybe even because of the amount money that gets thrown around. Being someone who creates things from time to time (music mainly) and always has written poems or melodies or whatever from a young age, I definitely understand that creating something to express how you feel is pretty wonderful. But it's also nothing special or unusual.
Everyone has some degree of creativity in them, some spark they could nurture if they felt the urge to. Some have it more than others of course but it's a human trait. In this pub there are plenty of other people who do something creative in their spare time. Dreamer and Stag do it with writing. Cari and Swanny do it with photography. Micky T plays in marching bands and brass bands, Mickado you like to noodle around with various musicial instruments right? As do you Hugh (how is the guitar learning going by the way?) I'm sure there are others I've forgotten to mention. Creativity is not a special thing reserved for the 'artists' or the 'art world'. Just because you are creative doesn't make you special- apart from the way "everyone is special in their blah blah" etc.
If you are creative, what you're not entitled to is to earn a living out of it without appealing to what people want to see/hear/read. And you're not entitled for people to like what you do or to treat it as seriously as you do. If you do make money out of it or people do appreciate your work, you're lucky. And you should be thanking your lucky stars and being humble- not up yourself like it seems so many artists are these days

Spot on Notch. Well said mate. I used to think creative types were pretentious, but I think that had something to do with my own insecurities, I really “painted everyone with the same brush” . But yeah, that was just me being defensive because I automatically felt like those people were trying to make me feel less special. I suppose now that I’ve grown up a bit and I’m more comfortable with myself and I can appreciate things that I see much more. I’ve recently started watching a lot of grand designs, I think it appeals to me because the dream for me is to design my own home, I wouldn’t be good at tasteful interior design or painting it etc. but I love the idea of creating a machine to live in. I think it satisfies both sides of my brain.
p.s. someone give me a loan of a million quid.

They make me appreciate real art more though, I listen to the muck they spout out then think back to some of the real gallerys I've been to with some of the old masters.
I remember seeing this
www.bc.edu/bc_org/avp/cas/his/CoreArt/art/resources/cvggo_taking.jpg
in Dublin a while back, and I was blown away. It is 400 years old and its actually like a photograph, the detail is astounding

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub, Christchurch
Some creative types really are pretentious though. Its a stereotype for a reason
And being pretentious and having a big ego is a good way to be successful in the arts because you totally need to promote yourself. You need to push your work forward at every opportunity and really believe its good and worthwhile. People like that have the confidence to do that. Humble, insecure, sensitive people- don't.
Someone creative but insecure will create something wonderful and think "Is this good enough? Will people like this? Maybe I should just quit..." whereas someone with a planet sized ego will create something mediocre and think "This is groundbreaking work! Time to call my million pretentious art friends and boast".
Guess who's work gets seen more? Sad. True.

Ah well obviously most of the people who are famous artists are pretentious douchers, I just mean people I knew in college who were into art and started painting themselves and the like. Now I say leave them to it. I have a mate who’s an artist (painter), possibly the best name in the world, Jay Walker. He was born a Jay Walker, no problem over here but in American he’s very much frowned upon

Lads I think we should pull.off the biggest scam in history and make me a modern artist.
I'll just get some paint and dot in on a canvas grab a gallery and write some fake reviews saying
"his work is ground breaking in the way he interprets the trials and tribulations of 21st century city life"
And boom, million bucks in my pocket

The very same Mick, it was hanging in the Jesuits dining room in Leeson Street for like 80 years without them even knowing what it was.

You should watch a movie called "exit through the gift shop", it's very good. A fella starts off just making short video's of graffiti artists and then tries to become one himself.

You need to really study up on the art world though and the history of 20th century art. Learn all the significant names to drop so people will stroke their chins and take you seriously. Is that a sacrifice you're willing to make?
Sounds like you should start with Jackson Pollock; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CrVE-WQBcYQ
Look at me tricking Hughie into learning about modern art
Some of the comments below the line on youtube are, as ever, a mess. Both sides throwing insults! But here's the key quote from the video "I want to express my feelings rather than illustrate them"
Once you're a famous modern artist you can build your grand designs house. Good luck with that!

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub, Christchurch
I think he was fully sincere. And I have no problem with that. Much of todays crop of artists, well I'm not so sure as to their motives.
I much prefer something intricate and with a sense of design like those goldleaf paintings I posted earlier to his work. Which is odd, because I like music which is all over the place and random and which most people find alienating in truth. Not all of it, but some of it.
Thats what gets people about guys like him; the lack of design. Designing something takes time, craft, patience. People are much more suspicious of artists who use randomness.

See I like to look at a Jackson Pollock painting. It's interesting, but I don't think it's worth anything. I like to look at clouds and puddles, but they're not works of art... Or maybe they are....

If you like looking at something, then it has some value. An aesthetic value. Whether it's art or not shouldn't really matter?
That we think an aesthetic value can be translated into a monetary value is one of the big conceits we have about art in my opinion. Can't be compared. Might as well put a price on clouds and puddles. BUT. An artist has got to eat. If no-one bought it, no-one would ever see it and we wouldn't have art. That would be a loss whatever you think of the actual art itself.
I guess the same thing is true of all commodities in a market. Some comments I only work out what I'm talking about as I'm typing them (or sometimes not even then) and this is one of those comments
More arty pretentiousness from me

It’s just a load of Irish football fans chanting in Poznan. Looks like great fun.
They’re singing “Stand up for the boys in green” etc.
Then one of them shouts “shoe’s off for the boys in green” and they all wave their shoes in the air.
Then it’s “sit down for the boys in green” and they all sit down and stage whisper the chant.
Then it goes banana’s again with “STAND UP FOR THE BOYS IN GREEN”.
Jez, we love a bandwagon.

Why?
Are they not listening to Jedward?
Do they know nothing?

Afternoon all. It's lunchtime and I need an escape.
Notch - I don't really do photography. Swanny is into it more though.
Do you know what, I'm getting tired of people who think they've got some god given right to insult others publicly because they think it's fun. Life is hard without people getting in your face and making it worse. Rant over.

The best thing I can say is that people who act like that, are giving a much poorer reflection of themselves than the person they are trying to make fun of or insult. The sheep that giggle and snigger, are just as bad. Just don't associate yourself with these people and stand your ground.
The people that get on like that are usually trying to cover up their own insecurities.

P4 was at the finals of their wee Tag Rugby Tournament today.
They lost in the final.
Refereeing Tag Rugby for that age group is well nigh impossible as they are breaking about 6 laws every second, but we was robbed!!!!!!
Her team still managed more off loads in 5 minutes than the senior Ireland mens 15-a-side team do in 80 mins!
