The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub, Christchurch
First topic message reminder :
Kia ora and welcome to the Virtual Rugby Pub - a place where you can come in for a sly beverage and discuss whatever's on your mind, or just eavesdrop on the regulars if you fancy a break from all the rugby chat.
The Pub has made it's way to Christchurch, as it prepares to host its first test match in over 2 years. While reconstruction continues post-earthquake there's plenty of vacant lots for the pub to "occupy".
The only rule in this pub is one of mutual respect for everyone in it, oh and no tampering with the pictures of Llanelli legend Nigel Davies, and local heroes Richie McCaw and Dan Carter.

Giving up the smoking by default!
Your method was a bit more extreme than "Will power and Nicotine patches" but effective none the less!

I never did try the helicopter method when I was giving up, I'm not sure it had been invented 10 years ago.

Here's a very nice story;
http://www.rugbydump.com/2012/06/2637/brian-odriscoll-brings-smiles-to-young-fans-faces-in-new-zealand
Brian O'Driscoll gives his jersey from Saturday to two kids who recently lost their Dad to cancer.
I love how the reporter asks them if they're going to fight over it and the youngest one says "No" and the older one says "Maybe"

Morning all, whats occurring!!
Billy - your probably not actually injured after that helicopter thing. Just withdrawal symptoms from not smoking.
My mam gave up smoking years ago and for a good while was just really horrible to be around until she got over withdrawal. But it pased quickly and she is years and years off them now. She tells me she will go back smoking again when if she turns 70 (she isnt even 50 yet).

You wouldn't believe what giving up smoking can do to a person, when I gave up the mood was fine but the chest infections were terrible to the point where I was actually pretty ill, not able to make it up the stairs without gasping for breath. My doctor said I no longer had a protective layer of tar

People will often cough more for a while after stopping smoking as the lining of your lungs recover and the "Ciliary elevator" starts to function once more!

My flatmate quit last year (though she "lapses" every couple of months on a night out). She's still chomping through the Nicorette gum at a fair rate of knots though. I have noticed her sense of smell has improved - 2 years ago I noticed the boiler was leaking a little gas, she didn't; now she spots if something in the fridge is "turning" before I do.

I’ve still got a good sense of smell. I can usually smell what’s for lunch in the canteen before anyone else in my office, and I’m the only smoker. I can also smell farts before they do, so what the large print giveth, the small print it taketh away…

He who dealt it etc
My sense of smell went through the roof after I gave up. I was like the human bloodhound, some kind of superhero with a super sense of smell. That's why of course I found my ability to taste again (95% of taste being smell) and took into cooking with a passion.
There are times I wish the sense of smell would leave me, usually when I'm changing the child's nappy

Morning pub
Billy!!! So good to see you
It's Friday!! I'm glad this week is nearly done.
My sister was rushed to A&E yesterday but thankfully she's ok, just a severe chest infection. She was more than slightly embarrassed when the ambulance man recognised her, he transferred one of her patients a couple of weeks ago!
Looking forward to a night out tonight with some people I used to work with

Swanny, glad she is ok.
I had to drive my girlfriends dad to hospital the other day. I shouldn't laugh but its a real Mr. Bean injury.
He kept his eye drops next to a tub of superglue and poured superglue into his eyes. It was actually very serious but I just thought it sounded funny.

Jees Staggy that makes my eyes water.
I remember my great uncle who used to keep some kind of toxic liquid in his cattle shed in an old coke bottle. It always struck me as the wrong place to keep a brown toxic liquid if you were doing a hard days work in there and felt a tad parched

Indeed. When I was 17 my brother and I got paid to spend a week of our school hols tidying a rather overgorwn garden so a widow could sell the property. Her husband had sat down in his shed after working in the garden, and picked up the cup of Paraquat instead of his cup of tea. It's a really nasty way to go: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paraquat#Toxicity

Reminds me of those 'shock' 70's education films you'd see in school. Don't climb pylons or play in substations, building sites, railway lines, farms etc. They were pretty graphic if I recall..

I always remember the one about the drowning girl and the man diving in without thinking to help her with the tagline 'she survived but he drowned'. That always spooked me

When I worked for ICI many years ago, it was on a project involving Paraquat (persisternce in soil) and used to make up standard solutions using the pure crystals! The analytical process involved solvent extractions using benzene and toluene, both classed as carcinogenic now. But at that time, I practically bathed in the stuff. Could I sue now, do you think?

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub, Christchurch
Unfortunately all the accidents mentioned occur with alarming frequency.
Do not keep your eye drops near anything.
Never store toxic liquids in anything other than their original container. This is especially important if there are ever likely to be kids around. They have much more sense than to put drain cleaner/paraquat/bleach in anything other than a child proof bottle marked DRAIN CLEANER/PARAQUAT/BLEACH stored anywhere other than out of reach. They will understandably assume you have the same amount of wit!
Kids also have such faith that, even though the first mouthfull of the stuff in the Cocacola bottle tasted vile and nothing like cocacola, they will keep on drinking in the hope that the next mouthfull will taste better.

I've started using eye drops instread of antishistamines to shooth my hayfever and it's working a treat. If that's the case is it possible that i didn't have hayfever in the first place?
Also, i've got this rash... nah, i'll leave that one for another day

They're called Otrivine Antistin eye drops. They're for hay fever but I didn't think they'd help my nose to stop itching, i thought they'd just sooth my eyes, but they do both. Happy days, i get really bad fits of sneezing and itchy-nose-itus (medical term ) around this time of year particulaly after it rains.

Rod Squad, the video is blocked but I heard it on the radio this morning (Douchebag alert: it was while I was working out ) He has a point does our Keano. There are soem sports in Ireland where we strive for greatness. Boxing and Golf being two of them while some of our athletes in the Olympics are also strivign to be the best. Sonia back in the day, Derval,, Gillick now. There's also that paralympic sprinter who won 2 golds in Beijing. His name escapes me but he wants to compete in the regular Olympics too. That's the attitude we need guys to have. Some of the Irish soccer team think they are better than they are.
The Underage structure needs to change somewhat but there are some good guys coming through.
One of my former Rugby coaches managed to get Drain cleaner in his face (and eye) a few weeks back. Thankfully he's alrigh, splash back is feicing awful!

Maybe that's why it's working for my nose Penfro!
T, yeah i think Roy made a few good points. The singing in the groud i thought was my of a defiant statement by a load of fans who basically said, look whatever is happening in our country right now (which is crap blah blah blah) and whatever is happening on the pitch tonight (also crap), we're here and we're in high spirits. Lets face it, the green army isn't as much a cross section of Irish soccer public than a cross section of the Irish public in general. So while he makes a good point, the expression "WE NEED THIS" kind of applies to the people who were there.

Any liquid that goes in your eyes ends up either on your face or inside your nose. Your tear ducts drain into the back of your nasal cavity. It's why you have to blow your nose why you cry. That's why eye drops have helped your nasal symptoms.

Ah right. That's good, i prefer not to take anti-histamines as they make me sleepy and give me nighmares when i take them. I'd love to know why my hayfever gets worse when it rains though...

Are these nightmares involving pink elephants?
It is a bit Mick. There are some die hard fans there and some the for the craic. Also Aprés Match has been poor enough overall but saw last night's one this morning and thought it was pretty great!

...Because the rain carries all the pollen that has floated up in the air back down and back into your eyes and nose!
If it keeps raining it will get better again.
Did you know that one way to help the symptoms is actually to just wash your face frequently throughout the day? Especially after you have been outside. Just simply removes the pollen that has gathered there.
Are you using one of the newer anti-histamines? The long acting ones cause far less drowsiness in most people.

That is one of the newer ones. You could try Loratidine as an alternative.
You can buy a generic version in Tesco or it is sold as Claritin. It might be less sedating for you. Everyone is effected differently.
