The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub, Sydney
First topic message reminder :
Hello and welcome to the Virtual Rugby Pub - a place where you can come in for a sly beverage and discuss whatever's on your mind, or just eavesdrop on the regulars if you fancy a break from all the rugby chat.
The Pub has made it's way to Sydney, as it prepares to host the final test match of the Australia v Wales series.
The only rule in this pub is one of mutual respect for everyone in it, oh and no tampering with the pictures of Kiwi, Linebreaker, Biltong and Asbo above the bar.

I really really am not talking about any incident at the weekend but that was what brought it back to mind.

MrsP I cannot think of an incident where a static player has done that and been penalised. I can think of several where a guy was running and stopped suddenly but I don't think thats really static.
O'Gara against the Lions and your man Vuna against Wales are the only examples I can think of that are close to that.

Cooper Vuna, Biltong. I hope that's not the incident Mrs P's on about.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub, Sydney
MrsP would you class that weekends incident as static?
Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub, Sydney
How is "stopped suddenly" not static?
I really really am not talking about that incident. I didn't see the match but the pictures reminded me of the question that I have been wanting to ask since last season.

And Halfpenny got up, composed himself and slotted over the penalty kick.
All in vain.

Stag, question.
As far as I am aware you are not allowed to touch a player in the air, be it a line out, or someone catching a ball.
But surely there is a distinction in the law, on whether you run into the guy in the air, or he runs into you?

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub, Sydney
Whenever I have a high ball to deal with (not often being a front rower), I ALWAYS make sure I jump, even if I don't need to and as I jump I raise my knees and turn away from the opposition.
Through this it usually means, if I am tackled as I get the ball I win a penalty due to being off the ground for quite a while so it's hard for the chasing pack to pick when to hit.

Because you have run to put yourself in the way of the jumping player.
To me static would be a situation where:
- Player A kicks
- Player B is directly underneath where the ball will land
- Player A runs 30m and jumps into the air
- Player B literally does nothing and stand there
- Player A gets taken out.
In that situation it is hard to argue with you. Player B would feel aggrieved to be punished.
However if you have sprinted ahead to get up to the ball and put yourself in that position I reckon you should be penalised should you take out the jumping player.

That lovely grey area of refereeing.
Tell you what my enthusiasm to go back refereeing next season is quite diminished. Not as enjoyable as it used it to be. Everything is falling more and more into that grey area and whether you do a good job or a bad one you are open to criticism.

I think Prop just kinda proved my point.
I am not criticising the ref here. Just discussing is all.
Biltong, that's what I mean and yet it seems the guy on the ground always get the blame. Sometimes unfairly in my opinion.

MrsP I understand your point, that's why I am asking our resident referee whether the laws depict a way to interpret it.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub, Sydney
MrsP I get what your saying and I can understand the logic.
I just think that if a guy has ran towards the ball and got himself into that zone he is responsible for the safety of the other guy. He isn't static. He ran to that position from quite a distance.
There is no definitive law so it is a very subjective answer. What I am saying could be complete tosh. Its just opinion it seems.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub, Sydney
But he can't get out of the way either because he hasn't got time or because he needs to be there to tackle the guy when he lands but the airbourne guy's forward momentum carries him into the other guy.

This is the bit I don't get.
Why doesnt he have time to get out of the way? Because he ran too far into the guy who jumped.
As to him needing to be there to tackle to guy when he lands, he definitely doesnt need to be that close. If he is that close that the guy has managed to jump, catch the ball and get taken out in the air then he is way too close and took a bad position.
Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub, Sydney
But these 2 guys are running at each other watching the ball and it becomes clear guy A is going to get there as he takes of. There is a split second to decide to contest the ball or wait for the other bloke to land. Meanwhile the other bloke has jumped and his forward momentum has carried him closer to the bloke on the ground.
This is all happening fast!

Sounds clear cut to me, you can't take a player out in the air... you either contest the ball in the air or time your chase to tackle him when he's safely on terra firma.. anything else is a penalty.
I concur with Stag on all accounts.....apart from when he called Thomond a scrumbag of course..... ...

Penalty of course.
Intentionally taking out a play in the air would be a card.
Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub, Sydney
I knew you were going to say that!
Just seems really unfair to me in a significant number of instances.
Have to say our lads are involved as the jumper in that situation in a reasonably high percentage of the cases I am talking about!

McCall is an interesting one Rava. Im not sure Saracens are showing the skill set that I would like Ireland to have. I wouldnt be outraged if I heard but I would be wary.
Or we could have a coaching alliance with each province getting to nominate somebody:
Head Coach: Brian McLaughlin (Ulster)
Forwards Coach: Anthony Foley (Munster)
Defense Coach: Bernard Jackman (Leinster)
Backs Coach: Eric Elwood (Connacht)
Everyone wins!!

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub, Sydney
Halfpenny himself had a card in the 6N for taking Parisse out, although both were looking skywards towards the ball and both were jumping for it. Another grey area. I don't think you can say its an automatic penalty, it depends on the circumstances, but the only player I have seen 'playing' for a penalty in those circumstances is Kearney in the 6N. Disgraceful jump all over Halfpenny when he knew he couldn't get the ball and was looking at the player not the ball. It boils down to the fact that you have to protect the player in the air as a referee. It's tough on occasions, but that must remain the case.

Afternoon All
Very sad about Tom Maynard. I'm hoping that there'll be some consolation in that it was an accident and not deliberate. Also, RIP Brian Hibbard. Ebbw boy, talented Welsh actor, probably known to everyone else as the singer from The Flying Pickets with the sideburns. I just thought of Dai when I heard about him (that's his character in this classic):

Apparently about 6 players from Bristol have signed for 'Nevers Rugby' seems pretty odd unless they all wanted a 'jolly' for a season?! In fact ignore that it's just Matty James signed....bit of drop from prem with Sale to 3rd tier French rugby!!

Ah, is that who Brian Hibbard is? The Flying Pickets version of Only You was my best mate's first dance at his wedding. He was brilliant in Twin Town too. I saw Ebbw Vale RFC mention his passing, but didn't click on when they mentioned Only You, I just thought it was a song he sang on the road with the Steelmen.
RIP Brian as well then.

Gutted about Brian Hibbard. He played one character, but did it very well.
Furious as well. I'm thinking of suing Apple and the BBC for their Poopie weather forecasts. Killed silage tonight and no sooner as we went to fetch the Tedder but it started Blydi raining, the first time ever as far as I remember.
Earlier I went to catch a ram with a metal crook. The ram didn't want to be caught, I wasn't prepared to let go and the crook came off second best, to the extent that it's now a metal straight!
