The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub, Sydney
First topic message reminder :
Hello and welcome to the Virtual Rugby Pub - a place where you can come in for a sly beverage and discuss whatever's on your mind, or just eavesdrop on the regulars if you fancy a break from all the rugby chat.
The Pub has made it's way to Sydney, as it prepares to host the final test match of the Australia v Wales series.
The only rule in this pub is one of mutual respect for everyone in it, oh and no tampering with the pictures of Kiwi, Linebreaker, Biltong and Asbo above the bar.

Also I'm sure a fair few of you heard that the missing Irish fan has been found but unfortunately he has died. No one should come home from a game or a tournament in a casket. Very sad.
Terrible about that young lad T, you are right, that sort of thing should never happen. In relation to the wifes comp it's going ok, largely thanks to Gibbo, who despite his personal issues with his mam at the moment found time to let me know how to ensure that our vote count keeps going up. At present the wife is on 540 and the other lady is on 505. Closes Sunday.
And thanks all for the kind words about the court case. I've been out and bought my team cakes as it most definitely was a team effort on this job.
Anyaways, hope everyone in here is well, and I see that Paddy Wallace starts against New Zealand on Saturday. Game's in the bag with that news surely!

Afternoon All
SWANNY - Happy Anniversary! I'm not sure what the exact date is, but I'm guessing it's sometime over the next few days.
It'll be my own anniversary on Tuesday. Not doing anything for it as I'll be in work. I don't mind, work is quite fun when it's someone's birthday.

Hi Cari!
It's nice that folks make an effort for a colleagues Birthday. So long as they don't make an eejit of you or do anything embarrassing!

Hello MrsP - not really. Everyone sings to the birthday boy/girl and does a little presentation. I think it just lifts the mood a bit, although some people moan about the food in the office. Whoever's has the birthday takes food in - usually cakes - but I'm taking in a bit of everything. It's better than being at home alone anyway

Hiya gang. Best wishes for Gibbo's ma.
Nice work on the conviction Ozzy
Pay day today, but not the backdated payrise (from 01/04) I was expecting. I've booked tomorrow afternoon off for a spot of 'retail therapy' to spend the now non-existant dosh. Feic it, I'll buy what I was going to anyay - new suit + summer trews.

I had a number of people asking me about it yesterday. It went very well with my pale blue shirt. What are the origins of the colours? The crest doesn't seem to have any connection to the Antrim flag/crest.

Evening pub
Well, there are benefits to working an occasional long day, I finished at 1.30 pm today! And I've had a most productive afternoon.
Finally upgraded my phone and have a shiny new Blackberry. Now to figure out how the thing works
Hound, I think I spent increasing amounts of time in the deck chair over the course of that evening. There was a direct correlation with the amount of alcohol consumed My niece thinks it's the 2nd best thing in the whole world. After Peppa Pig... obviously.

Hound, not sure about the origins but when I was playing we had dark blue and light blue hoops a la Cardiff.
The Club Crest was designed in a competition by local school children to mark the opening of our new grounds and clubhouse in 1979. Depicted are the team colours, the oak tree that stands in the middle of our grounds, the old church tower ruins in the town centre and the grass indicates our rural location.

Evening, amigos. I enjoyed that clip, Prop - good work. Also Ozzy - great result for you and your team Waiting for 9pm when BBC4 is due to broadcast a concert from Stirling featuring the Simon Bolivar Youth Orchestra of Venezuela and a whole load of primary school kiddies from the Raploch (notorious sink housing estate) who have been working their wee socks off learning to play musical instruments for the last 2 years. Sadly, the concert is to take place in a temporary open-air venue - and it is lashing down nearly horizontal rain. I would not be surprised if it is called off, which would be a dreadful shame.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub, Sydney
Puma,
I was reading about that earlier. Such a great thing to teach kids a musical instrument.
My kid's primary school was a pilot for a much scaled down version of that idea here. Although it doesn't serve a "sink estate" or any where close to that they had all the P3 kids learn to play either violin or cello for just 6 weeks. My youngest was involved. The kids were allowed to express a preference for which one they would like to try. Given that my youngest is really small and one of her sisters plays violin the teachers were confident that she would choose that. They even sourced a very very tiny one for her. But, no. Madam decided she would be the first of the Ps to play the cello. It was hilarious seeing this tiddly little girl bowing away at this cello which completely dwarfed her.
All the parents were invited to hear them all play together.
They were fantastic considering they were 6 and 7 year olds of no particular musical ability and who had had only 6 lessons!

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub, Sydney
One of the amazing things about the schools I went to in Scotland was their music programmes. Top class. Not just in general education and tuition but in organising so many varied ensembles on a regional level and the opportunities you got with them. At about 15/16 I got to perform in the Usher Hall in Edinburgh to a crowd of around 2000. You just can't replicate that sort of experience.
In Northern Ireland, it seems totally scattergun. Big grammar schools have great music departments, but the comprehensives or whatever they are called now... and the Standard Grades, Highers and Advanced Highers seem way ahead of the GCSEs and A-levels they have here. Couldn't believe how sheltered and clueless about all but a very narrow range of classical repetoire some of the NI students who came into the Universitys School of Music were. Very traditional. We did all that orchestral and classical repetoire but also covered Trad. Music, Blues, Jazz, Avant Garde, Punk, 20th Century Music... as well as actually having a strong Music Technology component.

Wow, lots of interesting stuff going on in the world.

Rava, thanks for that - proud to 'represent' your manor bud.
Rev's tie will most likely be worn on next Friday's London meet up.
I (+ As) want to keep these going. Good nights when they happen. That's the positive part of London culture. We've had different nationalities and club supporters coming together for a beer and a yap.

Update - concert is in full swing. The weather in Stirling is wet and a bit windy, but nowhere near as bad as it is here 40 km further north. Is your lassie still playing, Mrs P? I started out with a half size violin, many m oons ago, but I can confidently state that I have zero talent when it comes to playing either violin or piano, so I content myself with just listening now - and give everyone else a break!

P4 is still playing violin, P3 plays the flute and P1-4 all play piano with various levels of commitment/enthusiasm. The 2 eldest played clarinet to grade 4 and then stopped.
We have just had 3 music exams in the past few days actually. Now the wait for the results!

Hound, the London meets are a great idea, you're lucky to be able to do them. Says the woman who got claustrophobia and crowd fever just travelling from Euston to Richmond! I'm a bumpkin these days what can I say! I may only have been to one but it was enormous fun, and I fully intend to gatecrash another one
Puma, I tried to learn the violin too but it seems I'm your equal in talent so I knocked that on the head rather rapidly! My sis is the musical one, she was a pretty good trumpet player in her youth, it's a shame she stopped playing.

He should be there for next Friday. I'm really looking forward to it, the Scottish contingent have nothing to be negative about on this one (but I wouldn't put it past them)

I feel the same Hoog. Because some firms in the big cities take the pifs and send complete idiots to do a crap job in the Magistrates Court, the Law Society has now decided everybody has to apply for 'accreditation' as a court advocate. You just know its going to involve a chippy failed lawyer assessing you in 'role plays'

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub, Sydney
Morning all.
+ ibuprofen and berroca please
I'm getting too old to play 2 games of netball back to back. Especially when the 2nd match is a final. But we won 11-10. Queue quite a few pints in celebration, and getting last tube home on a school night. Thankfully today's only a half day in the office, this afternoon we're having a team building "session" at the Greenwich Yacht Club.
'tis fair to say I won't be waking up at 6am tomorrow for the Aus vs Wal match.
