The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub, Sydney
First topic message reminder :
Hello and welcome to the Virtual Rugby Pub - a place where you can come in for a sly beverage and discuss whatever's on your mind, or just eavesdrop on the regulars if you fancy a break from all the rugby chat.
The Pub has made it's way to Sydney, as it prepares to host the final test match of the Australia v Wales series.
The only rule in this pub is one of mutual respect for everyone in it, oh and no tampering with the pictures of Kiwi, Linebreaker, Biltong and Asbo above the bar.

Thanks Swanny. This will be a new experience for me. I gather they will have a circle and a fire-pit ... It's happening in one of the local pubs which is closing for the actual ceremony.
I shall enjoy it anyway.

You sound like my parents in law talking to my daughter.
Them "you can have a pony when you're a bit older"
Me "no you can't"
Them "horses are lovely"
Me "no they're not they bite and kick and stand on your feet, they only stop eating when their jaws are sore (i.e. never) and their manure is no use to man or beast"
Them "we'll find you a nice pony and you can put ribbons in its mane"
Me "only Cowboys ride horses and you hate cowboys..." etc.

Not yet LB, I'm at home. Off there tomorrow afternoon sometime.
We have a lot of horses round here, I regularly hear them clip-clop down the road. My niece goes running to the window when she's here and hears one. There's a stables about a mile away that must have 40 horses.
Kia, it sounds fab, take photos if you can please, I'm really intrigued.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub, Sydney
Just read this story
http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/horse-racing/18554323
about her. I had never thought about horses birthdays in the Southern hemisphere. IN the NH ALL horses have the same birthday - January 1st. This means that a horse born on Jan 2nd will be 364 days old when he turns one. Therefore when it comes to the Classic races (1000, 2000 Guineas, Oaks, Derby, St Leger) which are for three-year-old colts and fillies, they are at an age / development advantage over horse born on Dec 31st.
If your horse is born on Dec 31st 2011, they become one on Jan 1st 2012; and 3 on Jan 1st 2014. When the Derby is run in June, they are really only two and a half years old. The horse born on Jan 1st 2012 would be six months older in the Derby and therefore would have a significant advantage.
Of course in the SH, horses will be born in your winter / our summer. I just googled it and see that your horses have their birthdays on August 1st. This would mean that if a SH horse were to attempt the Derby (restricted to 3-Y-Os then they could be much nearer 4 years old.
All the talk of Black Caviar includes a little about Phar Lap, probably the only other Australian horse which is seriously well known on this side of the world.

It's a great sound isn't it LB. And incredibly loud! The street is very quiet in the evenings, it's a fairly small side street, and you can hear them from a long way off heading back to the field at the end of the road.

We have regualr amazing traffic jams in the village - yogurnauts don't really suit the narrow road. Our local coach company has branched our into horse-drawn conveyances. Makes for really good fun on the road as EVERYONE is forced to be patient behind them.

Yes, it's August 1 here.
Phar Lap was actually born near Timaru in Winchester, NZ. "We" stole it and claim it as one of ours, of course.

It doesn't matter where they are born - it is where they are trained that counts. Although, when an Irish-bred horse wins a major race (at the expense of the Irish-trained ones) we do generally remind people that we bred him.
Story about Arkle's begetting:
Breeders plan which stallion they will put their mares to. So anyway, the plans were all in hand, but the mare was being difficult and would not stand for the stallion. They brought in a "teaser" (I don't need to explain that cincept do I?) to get her "ready" for the stallion. She was having none of the planned mating and kept trying to go to the teaser. eventually, the breeder gave in and let her stand for the teaser. The result was Arkle ...

Thanks Kia
We have similar traffic problems. There is one road that runs the length of the village (about 2 miles) that is tight but passable for large trucks but 90% of the other roads aren't! Somebody somewhere in the village has to call the police at least once a week 'cos something's got stuck.
I haven't yet worked out who it belongs to but I have seen a pony and trap in the village on several occasions. And yep, it's the most efficient traffic calming measure I've seen.

Earthquake in Boorowa (about 300km as the crow flies west of Sydney) a few hours ago. We used to have a farm there. It was only a small one but it rattled the residents.

Evening all
Long week at work over, looking forward to the weekend at home with my girlies.
Hope everyone is well?
Breaker, are earthquakes a regular occurrence in Oz then, as that's a couple in pretty quick succession isn't it?

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub, Sydney
I was just thinking Ozzy. We've had huge floods in the last year and I understand earthquakes are partly caused by changes in hydraulic pressure. Maybe all the weight of the water simply causes the crust to slip? Also when it gets hotter... the crust maybe dries out, then 'snaps' somewhere? (excuse my non-scientific explanation, geologists)
We get lots of little ones constantly but it's odd to hear about 3 earthquakes in about 3 weeks.

Sounds a reasonable explanation to me, but I know nothing about this topic, so for all I know it could be way wide of the mark.

Kia, we have teasers, but they are vasectomised. I had a chat with a guy from Aberdeen who tried to sell me Tophill Joe, world record priced ram. He told me he had an attitude "aye, he kulled ma best tisar!"
When my brother was starting his own flock he bought an old ewe from my father at killing price - £50. We had a ram lamb he wanted to use who was not performing so he chucked him in with some old ewes to rev him up a bit. No sooner had we closed the gate than he did the job on the old ewe (who was due to be mated with another tup). She had twin ram lambs that he sold for 5000 guineas each. From a £50 ewe and a free service!

Spread out over a large area, Ozzy... mostly in uninhabited remote areas. The only one I remember here was in 1997.

Oz is about 33 x Great Britains.
NSW is about 38 times bigger than Wales but 95% live within 100km of the coast. You go from sub-tropical to arid desert like country. West of Narromine (450km west of Sydney) it starts to look like Mars!

And thanks for all the votes as well, and that goes to all in here who have voted.

I just steer the ship, they power the engines. Seems to keep us afloat that way.
(not sure why i suddenly got all nautical there, I know feic all about boats by the way!!!)
Really hope that England can turn the Boks over tomorrow, but not confident at all. Our pack is going to have to seriously man up, as last weekend they just got smashed from the first whistle.

It's a good analogy Ozzy, without direction and power you'd never reach your destination, you'd just go round in circles. And I know feic all about boats too!
I'd love to think we can turn them over but I fear we won't. More than happy to be proved wrong though
