The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub, Sydney
First topic message reminder :
Hello and welcome to the Virtual Rugby Pub - a place where you can come in for a sly beverage and discuss whatever's on your mind, or just eavesdrop on the regulars if you fancy a break from all the rugby chat.
The Pub has made it's way to Sydney, as it prepares to host the final test match of the Australia v Wales series.
The only rule in this pub is one of mutual respect for everyone in it, oh and no tampering with the pictures of Kiwi, Linebreaker, Biltong and Asbo above the bar.

Well that was a frustrating and disappointing tour for Wales. Oh well, I'm going to drown my sorrows in a brew and sausage sarnie for breakfast.

Morning.
Bad luck Wales (again). Another close one by the look of it.
Congrats to Scotland.
But wtf has happened to Ireland
A few people predicted this might happen after last week mind.

While this is not all Deccie's fault, we lose all credibility if we keep him after this.

Picking a guy who was on holidays 5 days ago for a start. We adopted some strange tactics and our kicking game reverted to that of the first test, i.e. aimless. We stood off the ABs in attack like we did against Wales, it's a joke.
The ABs were absoultely brilliant. That doesn't hide the fact that we got certain things wrong tonight.

I'm sorry but all I saw was a poor game by the players on the pitch who struggled doing the very basics like catching the ball then no tactics would make much difference.

You're right Munsty. It's not all on Kidney. Some of it is though. Those guys simply didn't look interested, they slipped off tackles showed no sense of urgency or impetus at the breakdown. It's up to the coaches to get the players up for the game. They didn't do that. We have failed to deliver consistently under Deccie.

I'm not saying Kidney shouldn't go but he is not to blame for that result.
Also, if players look like they aren't interested, they should be dropped.

I think he got selection wrong. You don't pick a guy who has been on holiday to start against a fired up All Blacks side. His plane was delayed due to fog too, Wallace only arrived in NZ on Thursday. He did alright on the ball but in defence he was all over the place and he was targeted to boot. He's shown a lack of faith in several players he trusted enough to bring on tour ahead of Wallace in the process there. Probably should have brought Wallace in the first place, would have given him a fair chance to be up to speed for this game if he needed to come in.
I think also we've got our preparation wrong. Tactics are the opposite of what worked last for some damn reason especially in defence. We were standing off them and drifting. And we didn't do that well. Left a lot of gaps in the backline. In terms of backs play, we're still as bad as ever. Lateral and blunt, and then because we can't create anything off structured play you have BOD and others trying to make miracles happen by themselves and giving away turnover after turnover. So all that is on Deccie.
Other factors... Most crucially, I think we just couldn't handle three tests in a row at this stage of the season. Mentally and physically tired, once we started poorly the house of cards came tumbling down. I don't think the players could go to the well one more time after a season that started in August.

It's his job to get the players interested. He doesn't deserve all the blame but he can't get away scott-free.

It's his job to a certain extent but how much more incentive do you need? You're playing for your country. There isn't a greater honour in the game. Also, these are meant to be professionals, we get told that often enough, they need to take that responsibility upon themselves to an extent.
Now I'm not saying Kidney is blame free, far from it, but if a player is completely uninterested, I don't want them playing for my country. I'd prefer a 100 point beating with 15 interested players every day.

It's always been said about Kidney that his greatest strength is his ability as a motivator. We know he isn't the greatest technical coach in the world and he needs to be surrounded by good coaches but if you look back at the plaudits he's won with Munster and when he started with Ireland a lot of them concern his ability to extract more effort and passion out of the players he has than you might expect. He's not a technocrat, he's a guy who needs to inspire teams to go beyond what they are capable of.
So he has gotten plaudits for his motivation in the past when he's had successful teams. Now he has a disinterested looking team he deserves criticism as well. And I say that as someone who agrees 100% with you on how players need to take responsibility on themselves. But if you strip away Kidneys legendary motivation abilities, if they are for whatever reason ineffective, what does he have left to offer?

Munsty, I'm agreeing with you, FFS I said Kidney doesn't deserve all the blame. He deserves a portion of it and the IRFU do too for not surrounding him with good coaches.

I thought somebody said the flip word to be fair.
Anyway, if you want to see my thoughts on Kidney/the team/what he is doing wrong, then head over to the match thread.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub, Sydney
Kidney's strength has been his ability to motivte and to meld the provincial players into a cohesive team. This is what happened in the famous Enfield meeting when Kearney apparently saked why the Munster players did not put in the same passion in the green shirt as in the red one. The Munster were the top Irish province.
At the risk of being shouted down for saying so, but I have been wondering for a couple of years now why some of the Leinster players are under-performing in the green shirt? Heaslip played well on this tour, but before that he hadn't playd a decent game for ireland since he was red-carded last tie he was in New Zealand. kearney never seems to do as well in the Ireland shirt as he does in the blue one.
I know someLeinster fans will shout me down becasue I am a Munster fan. But ... my passion for ireland is as great as for Munster, and I don't care which province the players (or coaches) come from.
I am left wondering if provincial success in Europe is actually a bad thing for Ireland becasue some of the players see themselves as being aove the others - provincial bragging rights etc etc. And if all the provinces were at about the same level in European terms there might not be more cohesion, more "we're in this tigether", more acceptance of the same level of mediocrity amongst the players when they get to the Irish squad camp.

No Thomond, I was making sure it was acknowledged that the players played really poorly in that game which wasn't mentioned.
I then said when mentioned about the players not being interested they shouldn't play if that is the case.
I know you don't blame Kidney fully but all I was pointing out that the players were at fault tonight.

I would agree with that somewhat Kia, I would say Kearney was one of our standouts in the 6 Nations though. I think there's some of that but I think the players don't seem to commit when it comes to Ireland (Stag has said things like that before)

Yeah it was fantastic KIA. I think it will still be a while till I appreciate it fully. It was all fantastic apart from the visa issues. There were many amazing things, like both the schools I went to, our secluded place on South Beach, the different churches and the people really. But I loved Zanzibar.
There are a lot of pictures on FB if you want to look at some.

Meanwhile, in the Cricket, Ireland are 2 for 2 in the first few balls against Australia in Belfast. Will this month of pain never stop for Irish sport?
