Re: Quiz Time 3 - Lowest Ranked Grandslam finalist
Mark Edmondson 212 1976 AO.
PS: Did no searches on the internet at all.
IIRC, Safin and Kuerten (was 66 - know this because of iC's Quiz part2).
McEnroe is the highest slam player (SF @W) as a qualifier, if I am not mistaken.

Re: Quiz Time 3 - Lowest Ranked Grandslam finalist
After Mark Edmondson...
No. 188 John Marks 1978 Australian Open Runner-up
No. 125 Goran Ivanisevic 2001 Wimbledon Champion
No. 100 Andrei Medvedev 1999 Roland Garros Runner-up
No. 91 Chris Lewis 1983 Wimbledon Runner-up
No. 86 Marat Safin 2004 Australian Open Runner-up
No. 66 Gustavo Kuerten 1997 Roland Garros Champion
I had forgotten about Medvedev who almost beat Agassi.
Ivanisevic was ATP 125 (from ATP website during W 2001) and unseeded.
Baghdatis was ATP 54 (from ATP website during 2006 AO) and unseeded.
Chang was ATP 19 (from ATP website during 1989 FO) and was seeded 15.
Becker was unseeded in 1985 at W (from Bud Collins's book - page 450). Krajicek in 1996 is the third player.

Was there a guy called (Chris ?) Lewis who once made a Wimby Final ? Or was that only an SF ..... ?? (Or did he not exist at all ....?? )
And Jan Kodes sometime back in the 70's ..... ??

1973 W Jan Kodes was seeded #2 due to withdrawals of other players.

Re: Quiz Time 3 - Lowest Ranked Grandslam finalist
Ah yes, thanks laverfan, the wiki link has filled me in on hazy memories of Jan Kodes, the boycott year and all that, but most notably the fact that Kodes only just edged our very own Roger Taylor in an agonisingly close 5 set SF tussle.
The broad consensus at the time was that if Taylor could just have got through to that Final then he would have beaten Metreveli (and perhaps comfortably so .... as did Kodes) ; and our wait for a first British Slam winner since Fred Perry would have ended there & then.
But sadly it was not to be.
And so, another forty years on, we're still waiting .....

Hence winning a slam is really hard work, and winners' achievements should never be belittled.

ps laverfan I didn't read your 12.18pm post especially well, or I wouldn't have asked the Chris Lewis question in the way I did
(but I was genuinely searching my own memory bank at the time......)

No malicious intentions on my part. Was just glad that you and I were looking along the same lines.

No worries whatever laverfan, it was merely my own oversight I was highlighting, and so the 'Doh!' was directed at myself. All is well.
