OWGR - Week #24
Thank God it's over, these are ridiculous hours to stay and watch golf, and I better wrap it up quickly before others start thanking God... So, it's congratulations to Webb Simpson, winner of the 2012 US Open! He will move up all the way to #5 in the world, right behind Tiger Woods, who had a very bright start of the week, but a pretty obscure finish... Obviously there are some other significant moves in the rankings after this week: McDowell who came just short in the end will climb to #11, Michael Thompson with an impressive jump up to #52, while Padraig Harrington finally enjoys a more significant move up to #75, following another great 'major' performance after his top 10 finish at the Masters...
It may come as a surprise, but there has been golf played in other places this week as well... The Saint-Omer Open took place in France, and I liked how the Englishman Gary Lockerbie who finished tied for 2nd place, is putting things into perspective: "This tournament is like a Major for the Challenge Tour so I’m delighted with my performance...". A great win there for the South African Darren Fichardt, his first one in Europe after about 9 years, and that should move him up somewhere inside #180.
Well done also to Thaworn WIRATCHANT from Thailand winner on the Asian Tour and moving up somewhere inside the top 140.
The OWGR table after week #24 should look as follows:
1 Luke Donald
2 Rory McIlroy
3 Lee Westwood
4 Tiger Woods
5 Webb Simpson
6 Bubba Watson
7 Matt Kuchar
8 Jason Dufner
9 Justin Rose

Re: OWGR - Week #24
Better than normal field at Hartford this week, especially given Simpson ascendancy - hope he shows up.
Bubba and Hun'ner too, together with Koooochar, Zacher, and the Kings of, not Leon exactly, but the house of Fancourt, Charl and Louis.
Thanks pd; is the "Most Interesting Man In The World" bidding farewell to the higher echelons? If so, farewell Miguel, farewell

Re: OWGR - Week #24
Cheers, kwini.
Surely the Mechanic's years must be numbered in the elite echelons, but we should just wait and see if that will be indeed years or months or weeks... He's in the BMW field in Germany this week, but unfortunately no sign of him at the Irish Open...
A quick early count for this week reveals:
- Travellers @ ~46 pts (up from 44 pts last year)
- BMW Intl Open @ ~32 pts (down from 38 last year)
And an early-early count for next week's Irish Open suggests that an encouraging ~40 pts is possible... in any case looks like we should have a sizable rise from the 28 pts last year...

Re: OWGR - Week #24
'Morning pd,
Understand Doug Ferguson is twittering that King Charl will be taking the next month off to rest an ailing rib; expect to see him w/d from Hartford and reappear at Lytham.
Imagine there'll be a fair few drop-outs from the Travelers, but one extra pro as Patrick Cantlay is scheduled to sign with Steinberg this Tuesday.

Re: OWGR - Week #24
Some projections for this week:
- Top 3 OWGR will remain untouchable for the time being.
- Simpson can move ahead of Tiger with a top 10 (ish)
- Bubba could also pass Tiger to #4 with win
- Kaymer could move to #10 with win
sb - great effort from Padraig last week, he could move as high as #42 with a win at Travellers (kwini - you can pass him the info if you follow him at the weekend )

Re: OWGR - Week #24
I would have thought that the US Open would be the least likely major for Padraig to win (or in other words, the main stumbling block to achieving the Paddy Slam which was talked about a few years ago - or at least, the "career" rather than royal flush/holy grail "calendar" version).
I'm now expecting a good showing at The Open from the celebrated Irish/Northern Irish contingent who grew up on links golf, because all 4 major winners have something to draw upon and/or prove.

Re: OWGR - Week #24
pd,
I'll be sure to convey that to him
Interestingly, Harrington's fifteen Major top tens include 6 at US Opens, four of them top fives.

Re: OWGR - Week #24
The final IFQ for the Open will take place at Sunningdale next Monday. The field is here, led by Matteo (top 10 will qualify)...
http://www.theopen.com/en/Qualification/InternationalFinalQualifying.aspx?entries=Europe
...pretty similar strength to any of those regular 24 pts ET tournaments. Most of them will then cross the water to Portrush for the Irish Open later in the week...

Just noticed that A. Hansen has disappeared from the BMW field, so that one should drop now inside 30 pts teritorry... Haven't seen any notable new WDs from the Travelers after Charl...
