Alternative Governing Body
Hi All,
Long time reader, first time poster etc...
Was just reading another thread that was put up which mentioned the issues surrounding multiple governing bodies in the sport of Boxing. So what's to say that Boxing fans couldn't setup their own governing body? Making it attractive to promoters by waiving sanctioning fees and perhaps allowing stakeholders (i.e. the fans) to vote on who the number 1 challenger for a belt should be?
If we could get enough hype surrounding it, perhaps it could be done. I mean what exactly does a governing body do anyway? Provide referees and judges? And?
Look forward to your responses.

Re: Alternative Governing Body
it would be a boxing fans dream, but it wouldnt work. you need one man with the right interests making the all decisions, much like dana white in ufc. im sure when all the exisiting bodys formed they had such dreams for reshaping the sport in the right way, but unfortunatly it just dilutes the value on every belt.
plus governing bodys have no power to make anybody fight anyone they dont want to.

With all the technology today what's to say it has to be one man at the top? It could be pure democracy at work
Sure the governing bodies have power, they should just strip those champions who won't fight their mandatories...

Re: Alternative Governing Body
but the best fighters make them the most money, and are who the public want to see.
if it ever happened id be right behind the revolution, but i just cant see. i tend not to put to much emphasis on the belts any more, expect the ring belt. that mostly seems to be fair and accurate.

Yeah but our organisation wouldn't care about the money which would be what makes it different. Of course it would be a big ask, and would take time. We'd probably need some standout boxers as well who were ready to fight anyone the fans put in front of them.

Welcome AC. Your post makes sense. So much so that it won't happen in a month of sundays. That's boxing where common sense flies out of the window.

Yeah another belt and governing body is just what we need!!.... just like we need Communism, a utopian state, and a multitude of other ideologyies and 'isms' which are too good to be true.
You're asking too much, you're asking for a government to have virtues, that is unheard of, unless it's in a sentence like this; people in power will do anything to retain power thats why governments are devoid of virtues and are corrupt (....even if their intentions were pure to begin with).
Great idea though!!

Re: Alternative Governing Body
Sanctioning bodies are a big problem but the real problem is the commissions who run the sport. There is very little co-operation amongst them. One commission can refuse a fighter a licence but an affiliated body will grant him one. Margarito and Chisora have both took advantage of this in recent times.
A worldwide commission would be ideal but some unity amongst them would help. Most of them make up there own rules and some seem to make them up as they go along.
There is no one to keep promoters in check and the TV companies seem intent on having a title on the line for almost every fight they broadcast. Promoters have far to much power in the sport considering they aren't impartial. No one looks out for the sport just their bank balance.
If we had 1 body we could maybe get towards losing a few weight classes, and maybe just maybe 1 sanctioning body with 1 champ per weight but I wouldn't hold my breath.

Re: Alternative Governing Body
Well why not have the WBC/A/O and IBF as semi finalists and have their champs square off with the two winners fighting to see who is the real champ.
Have another body (yes) paid for by TV to be the actual world champ. Less addled brains can work something along those lines.

i think the super 6 tournaments are a good way on finding the best in the division, worked well at middleweight, expect perhaps the exclusion of bute.
