Top 100 Distribution by Country (1973-2011)
Suggested by Lags72 and in part by - https://www.606v2.com/t31278-the-spanish-armada-in-full-sail
There are 68 countries since 1973 who have had a player in Top 100. I have used well-known three-character country codes and year-end rankings.
1. In some cases, if a player stayed in the Top 100 during the year, but dropped out of the Top 100 at the year-end, the count does not reflect that.
2. In 1976 and 1980, two or more players have the same rank, but the ATP data does not reflect the actual points. Hence the total number of players is not 100 but is 99 and 98 respectively.
3. 1981 is the peculiar case of ATP publishing only ranking changes, hence an year-end ranking table is not available. ITF has changed their website to show only the last 10 years of data, hence a painful year to complete the research.
Some interesting factoids...
ARM - Armenia - Sargis Sargisian #38 - 12 Jan 2004 (ranked #69 in 1997 year-end).
BIH - Bosnia and Hercegovina - Amer Delic #60 - 9 July 2007 (ranked #93 at 2006 year-end).
BLR - Belarus - Max Mirnyi #18 - 18 Aug 2003 (ranked #74 at 1999 year-end).
BOL - Bolivia - Mario Martinez #35 - 12 Sep 1983 (ranked #37 at 1980 year-end).
BUL - Bulgaria - Grigor Dimitrov (current player).
CRC - Costa Rica - Juan Antonio Marin - 11 Oct 1999 (ranked #87 at 1997 year-end).
CYP - Marcos Baghdatis (current player).
DEN - Kenneth Carlsen #41 - 7 Jun 1993 (ranked #69 at 1992 year-end).
KOR - Korea - Hyung Taik-Lee #36 - 6 Aug 2007 (ranked #90 at 2000 year-end).
SEN - Senegal - Yahiya Doumbia #74 - 19 Sep 1988 (ranked #83 at 1988 year-end).
USA has the highest number of players in Open Era (45) in Top 100 in 1982.
E&OE. Please let me know if there are specific countries I should look into. If you see errors, let me know and I can correct them.

Now can you do the same for the Women please, and compare and contrast the trends?

I would love to do that, but I do not have the ability to look at rankings by date (for example year-end over the years) to do a similar analysis. If you have a different link where I can see historical rankings, it would be wonderful. I have built the backend to assimilate the information using a Unix cURL/shell script.
This is the link I am looking at but do not have a date range I can specify.

PS: Just sent an email to the WTA Webadministrators to see if they can help.

Re: Top 100 Distribution by Country (1973-2011)
My comment was tongue-in-cheek Laverfan. Appreciate the effort you've put in to producing your excellent analysis of the Men.....but I really wouldn't expect you to do it all over again!!
I would expect the trends to be similar in any case. When Australia, then the USA, were predominant, that predominance applied in both the Men's and the Women's game. Likewise, the subsequent decline seems to have applied equally to both genders.

Anyone know what happened to GBR male tennis post 1978?
Could Thatcher and Blair be responsible for the dreadful GBR stats post 1978?

I wish the WTA site would allow it. I took your comment seriously, partly to assure that I like WTA, despite it's detractors.

There are few to match Goolagong and Court career. Fantastic athletes. I personally have a soft-corner for Australians as my moniker would amply indicate.
I am glad you asked that question.

Re: Top 100 Distribution by Country (1973-2011)
In this post-Wimbledon lull, ahead of the Olympics, I found myself having a more detailed persusal of the data meticulously compiled (as ever !) by laverfan in this thread and was struck by just how dramatically the picture has changed w.r.t. nationality breakdown over the last 3 or 4 decades.
I pulled out a few key stats from laverfan's Y/E Top 100 tables, using 1976 (happy days for tennis, Borg beginning his reign as King of Centre Court .... ) and 2011 as the base comparison years.
1976 :
- Australia had 15 Top 100 players
- USA boasted 32
- a total of 27 different nationalities were represented, with only Aus and US as above enjoying 'double figures'
- interesting to note that even GB had four players - more than Spain (3) and France (2)
Fast forward to 2011 year-end :
- Australia had only 2 Top 100's
- USA has only 9
- (and GB now just one of course....)
- 37 countries are represented in all, being an increase of 37% on the 1976 total
- the countries with double figure representations are now Spain, with 13 ; and France, with 10
By way of further comparison I looked at the entry field for Wimbledon 2012, and the salient countries/figures are :
- Spain : 14 entries
- France 13 entries
- USA 12 entries
- Australia 3 entries
- 38 nationalities represented in all, many of course being Eastern European
One thing's for sure : whichever way you sort the numbers........
"The times they are (or have been...) a-changing "

Re: Top 100 Distribution by Country (1973-2011)
Interesting trends in there -
Clearly Australia, Sweden (look at the numbers around the mid to late 80s) and to a slightly lesser extent the USA have lost strength and particularly strength in depth from their game over the years.
Perhaps more curious is the lack of domination of the rankings by any one country now - yes, both Spain and France have gained overall, but both are declining from their peak numbers. I guess what this shows more than anything is the increased international diveristy of the field at the top level - I note that you've tried as far as possible to use the nationalities as now applied for the players from former USSR and Yugoslavia, so that's only a trivial factor.

Re: Top 100 Distribution by Country (1973-2011)
dummy_half : Agreed, there is no domination by any one country now - although the only country to ever have truly dominated would seem to be the US, who could boast a total of 32 Top 100 players back in 1976 but only 9 at year-end 2011
