Both are exceptional players, but for me Messi is the best footballer that I have ever seen.

Ronaldo is the more complete physical footballer, Messi contributes far more to the games he plays in and does week in, week out. He has also been doing it for Argentina for the last 12-18 months. Ronaldo, when things are quite going his way, can go missing.

Messi 3 World Footballer of the Years, Ronaldo none.

I'm not alone! I thought maybe everyones opinions had shifted when I wasn't looking, but I agree with what Afro says.

Viva - but if a team played to Messi strengths (strengths I believe make him the best in the world) then wouldn't their chances of success increase dramatically? That's the sort of difference he can make.

I completely disagree with this, I think you have it completely the wrong way around.

Ronaldo, when things are quite right, gets frustrated. However, the team is playing, Messi pops up and makes the difference. Barce is last seasons La Liga shows that. They didn't platy well, but Messi won them game after game and kept them within a whisker of winning the league.

Both Messi and Ronaldo were guilty of not performing internationally like they do for their clubs on a consistent basis. That changed for Messi 12-18 months ago. Whilst Ronaldo has played two good games in the Euros, he still needs to maintain it for a longer period to match Messi on that front.

Don't get me wrong, it is very close between the pair, but Messi just for me

This is an important distinction. Is it Messi needing Barcelona to play to his strengths, or Guardiola making his team play to the strengths of the best footballer in the world as that is their best route to success. Real play to Ronaldo's strengths, United to Rooneys. It would be foolish not to wouldn't it.

Morning lads thumbsup

My thoughts are Messi > Ronaldo. Messi hasn't won the Ballon D'Or 3 times for nothing you know Whistle

(And on a side note, I just saw the Portugal goal, and does anyone think Cech should have done better? As a goalie I thought he was very slow in changing directions, and could have reacted quicker tbh)

I think Cech has been altogether very poor of late to be honest. Bar the penalty shootout in the CL final, I actually thought his season wasn't great, and his Euro 2012 hasn't exactly been a success either.

I personally think that next season, Courtois will genuinely challenge Cech for the GK's shirt. That is my tip for next season king

I think next season we'll see a new, young Chelsea. It's what Villas-Boas tried to do by playing the likes of Romeu and Sturridge.

Well lets face it Chelsea have to move on, AVB had the right idea in principle, but he just tried to change too much too quickly. And the young players weren't quite ready to step up, and the old players probably still had a good season in there legs (as they showed by winning the CL)

We all have our own opinions I favour Ronaldo and you lot favour Messi, not much between the two players both are fantastic and we're lucky to be able to see two great players going head to head. Ronaldo > Messi

Where was Messi in Copa last year?

Did anyone watch that Castro thing about Ronaldo? They made him head the ball just as the ball was crossed to him the lights went off it was brilliant and he scored I doubt that he done it on his first go the way they made it out to be.

Castro love to hype Ronaldo I want t

It is good to have different opinions, otherwise this discussion would just be boring!!

Messi played alright during the Copa. He was arguably Argentina's best player, playing in a different position than he normally does for Barcelona. He didn't play as a goalscorer, he played as a creator and got his share of assists.

The problem for Argentina during Copa, was the team as a whole, not Messi. And idiot Maradona playing his best player in an unfamiliar position that doesn't take advantage of his strengths.

I thought Messi was god of the gods and he can do everything great, I agree he was the best Argentina player not much of a compliment when the rest were not so good. If you are hailed as the greatest of all time then you shouldn't have problems play in a diffrent position. Ronaldo has done it many times.

I don't like the Anti Man Utd fans who dislike Ronaldo just because he played for United, its always the Liverpool fans who try to use Messi in a debate because they can't talk about thier own club. They bring up that Ronaldo is a selfish person and Messi is the godfather of UNICEF and Cancer Research put together.

I don't think Ronaldo helps himself in that regard sometimes Viva, Messi comes across far more humble about his achievements. And I don't ever recall him commenting about Ronaldo being knocked out of a tournament like Ronaldo did the other week, that was pretty classless.

Ronaldo doesn't play for United and hasn't done for quite a while. Ronaldo today is a far better player than during his United days, so it really doesn't come into it.

Your missing the point. Messi didn't have any problems playing out of position. He played well and got assists, but then got criticism that he wasn't doing what he does for Barcelona and getting a goal a game.

Ronaldo was getting criticism for not playing for Portugal like he does for Real. What wasn't mentioned was that for Real he plays a lot more centrally than he had been playing for Portugal, and therefore was never going to play the same. It was a different role!!!

Afro I guess United fans will just forget Ince joining Liverpool because he played a long time ago or Tevez joining Man City or Liverpool fans on Owen. Fans never forget, they hated Ronaldo because he was so good they wanted him but he played for us.

It don't matter if he don't play for United anymore he still has the link that he was a great United player and some rival fans will hold on to that and can't see beyond on how awesome and great he is and use Messi to cling on to any sucsess just like they did when Spain won Euros and WC disgusting bitter unloyal dogs "We're not English we're Scouse" until it's signing on day.

Messi gets kicked all over the shop and normally just gets up and carries on. Well he has whenever I have seen him play.

From my understanding, your opinion of Messi being cocky is an assumption of what he is like behind what he see in public, whilst Ronaldo's is there for everyone to see.

There is nothing wrong with Ronaldo's cockiness btw. When you are as good as he is, then you can justify being cocky.

OTW - I would say he wouldn;t get good ratings until he is playing again

Mighty I'd advise you against buying Fletcher now he has been out for a very very long time with a nasty illness and he may not even play again, gutted for the lad he is such a hard working player and we really missed him last season.

I don't think he will get rated because he has been out for a while and no one knows when he will return same boat as Hargreaves.

Scotlands second greatest ever play Darren "500 Miles" Fletcher I love you xxx

I'm not saying it to you guys because you've come out with good reasons to back your player. I'm talking about the old 606 or fans in general on the radio or whatever who hate Ronaldo because of his playing days with United and can't see past that.

Messi is a fine player and if someone says they prefer him and give legitimate reasons thats ok with me but when its these bitter fans who just do it because thier own team is Poopie thats annoys me.

It's not a stretch to put either ahead of the other in my opinion (although for me I'll always pick Messi) so it's a bit of a limited debate really.

A good debate would be who is the 3rd best player in the world...

I'd say Iniesta for me.

Yes but Ronaldo has a little pecker

Fixed.

In a very childish manner.

I like Ronaldo, think he is a great player. But I think atm he is the second best player in the world behind Messi. Not by much, but just.

I also like Ronaldo because when played for United against Norwich, we won 2-0 at Carrow Road. So Norwich have a 100% record against Ronaldo king

Yes but Ronaldo did Gemma Atkinson, that's why people hate him

Laugh

I think we all agree.

It was a good debate that didn't turn into an argument!! That's what these forums are for.

I've always had Xavi ahead of Iniesta.

Have you seen the pics of Iniesta being crowded by 5 Italian players during this years Euros? Brilliant pic, I'll try and find it.

When Xavi has the ball, he is the best in the world because noone else can get it off of him.

Leon Britton is the same

I wonder what he'd have to do to be considered alongside Ronaldo and Messi really. He's playing at such a high level but still seems to be considered that bit below them both, probably irreversibly.

In terms of favourite to watch, I'd say Pirlo. I won't make a case for him being top 3 though...

Leon Britton has such great passing statistics because all he does is pass it 5 yards across or backwards.
