The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub, Béal Feirste
First topic message reminder :
Hello and welcome to the Virtual Rugby Pub - a place where you can come in for a sly beverage and discuss whatever's on your mind, or just eavesdrop on the regulars if you fancy a break from all the rugby chat.
The Pub has made it's way to Belfast - the rope-making and ship building capital of the world.
Now the Mouth of the Shoal awaits the safe arrival of one of it's long lost daughter's - Cariadwr - in her ongoing quest to be as close as possible to one of her favourite players... Tomás Ó Buaigh of Emyvale.... on her Birthday
The only rule in this pub is one of mutual respect for everyone in it, oh and no tampering with the pictures of Nial O'Connor, Cari & Tommy Bowe, "Pickles" the wonder dog of '66, Wikus van de Merwe and Black Caviar above the bar.

What the hell are NEW potatoes? My mother always raved about NEW potatoes and used the fact that they were NEW as an excuse when her chips turned out pasty and white.

They're just smaller and whiter Pete. I was never a fan of them myself. But it was always my mam's selling point.

Bore da pawb / good morning all, please!
I only like it because it was the theme tune to 'the Wonder Years'.

As a ten year old I had the red album on tape. I loved it. My brother played me the Cocker version and I hated it. He asked me why. I said because its different and in one bit he just screams like a mad man. He explained to me why I was wrong using words like passion, soul and character. If he was just going to copy the Beatles what was the point? I dismissed him. But a few years later I found his tape. By then I'd, erm, developed and I suddenly knew what he'd been on about.
I love it.

It wouldn't be hard for anyone to do a better version of that song. Ringo Stars voice is dreadful. Even Octopus's garden could be improved upon.

Ringo's voice has a charm of its own. It suits 'Octopus's Garden' down to the ground. Bob Dylan doesn't have a particularly good voice but I haven't heard many covers of Dylan songs that are as good as the originals (the Byrds' ones aside, and some of those are duds).

Dinny Byrne (Joe Lynch) was a character in an earlier RTE programme. What was it called?

Fair point that there are some singers who aren’t great singers technically but their voice is still good, but I really don’t like Ringo’s voice. In fact, I really hate it. He strikes me as the luckiest man in musical history to be honest, Lennon and McCartney wrote some masterpieces, George Harrison has some really fantastic tunes, but Ringo… well they just let him have a song on every album didn’t they. As Paul McCartney said when asked if Ringo was the best drummer in the world “he’s not even the best drummer in the Beatles…”

Hehe, i was only kidding. His face is far from smackable. But if i was a fan from another country, i'd dislike him. For the same reasons i dislike Dan Carter, he's bloody good and women love him.

You don't think 'Octopus's Garden' is a good song, Mick? I think it's lovely, and all the better for being quite simple. His song off the White Album is poor enough, though.

I do quite like Octopus's Garden, but i like it more for the guitar intro and the solo. In fact, the music is good, but if Paul McCartney rerecorded the vocals today I'd say i'd prefer them more.

You're a bit of a Beach Boys fan Mick, have you bought the 'Smile Sessions' album yet? It's incredible. The first CD with an approximation of what the finished album might have sounded like is good enough, but the second CD with excerpts from various album sessions is something else. There was such an insane amount of creativity going on.

That's the one. They abandoned it in 1967 and bootlegs of the sessions have been doing the rounds for years. Then last year they released an official CD of what the album might have sounded like (Brian Wilson either can't remember or never knew the running order of the tracks). The outtakes from the sessions are mindblowing, really.

Ah Hugs... be nice if you were there allright bud.
Made contact again with Eamon Killeen (via his bro) ... at a Wake in the Skylon. Ha! Irish Wakes are far better craic than weddings. In a nice way like. She was 91 (Ma's sis) and was drinking double-gins and dancing up to a few months ago. So... we celebrated her life in style.
2 Dutch guys and a few Croatians, on Tour, were filming a load of us, pished as newts, singing Nat King Cole and Rebel songs (eclectic or wha?) ... Thought we were celebrating a wedding or a birthday. They thought it was wonderful. Bless em.
Check ye later regs.
EDIT: Chreers T, and Pete.
