Wimbledon Day 3, or 2b
First topic message reminder :
(or not 2b, I guess that is the question....)
Well there (again) matches held over so it is in a way. At least it's not Day 1c.
Anyway HRH TMF is in the Palace, playing against the nefarious Fognini so all is right with the World. Should be fun, I hope.
Djokovic may have some early pressure from Harrison but we're still firmly in pushover round territory which lasts until the quarters at earliest these days, regrettably).
Some women are also playing, I think.

Another seed bites the dust as Stan Wawrinka is knocked out in five sets by Jurgen Melzer.

Touching it once, or wincing around it after every loser? These are the same now?CaledonianCraig wrote:bogbrush wrote:Oh yeah, he's been really playing it up.CaledonianCraig wrote:bogbrush wrote:Dare I speculate how Andy would be handling it?
Well I seen him holding it so that qualifies in people's eyes as a drama queen, Non?
Well yes. After all holding an injured part of the body does seem to qualify you as a drama queen in this day and age. So be it.
As I've said before, Andy will never, ever walk alone will he?

Has Wawrinka ever won a 5 set match? Lost in 5 to Murray on grass, lost to Tsonga on clay in 5 now to Melzer. Showing once more that Federer was the only reason Switzerland won the Olympic doubles in Beijing.

I just do not snide remarks that is all bogbrush but you like resorting to them to have sly digs at other players. Pretty sad really. My only crime - defending a player.

I thought that @ the French Open: tough matches would help prepare Fed for the latter stages but in fact, it didn't in his semi with Djokovic. However, in the French Open, there's precedent that tough matches early on help Fed. There isn't one for Fed @ Wimbledon.
Fed sailing through in the early matches bodes well for his chances @ Wimbledon, it doesn't create a false sense of security because Fed has often got to the final without dropping a set, that's how good he's been @ Wimbledon. It's only two matches in, so very early, however, I've liked what I seen. Only losing serve once and such lopsided sets early on is good. This confirms my view that Fed stands an excellent opportunity to reach the semis.

Difficult to know whether it's good to 1. Sail through or 2. Get battle hardened. Certainly two quick wins boosts confidence and saves energy. Fed never looked happy with his hitting at the French but appears to be striking the ball well and moving well, although I've only seen glimpses of his matches so far.

I think we'll get a better idea what shape/form he is in when he gets a real challenge. You can only beat who you have in front of you though and he has done that with the minimum fuss.

Gulbis declining to blow it against a journeyman. 6-2 1st set.

Yeah but he's a break down in the second set. Prepare for the usual meltdown. I can't believe he beat Berdbrain.

I'd probably agree with that assessment. The question is, where will that challenge come from until next Friday, a few days from the final itself? Simon? Perhaps but he hasn't recorded a win over Fed since 2008. Tipsarevic? Highly unlikely: didn't he lose to Fed during the clay court season? Simply put, the threat comes from Djokovic but that's the semi and semis usually are tricky, especially with Djokovic, the World No.1.

That's a shame, he showed promise in that Berdych match. I wondered whether he could keep it up, we have some sort of answer now.

I think you misunderstood - Gulbis won the first set 6-2 although he is a break down in the second set against the Pole Janowicz.

Oh okay, not such a bad result so far!
I tried looking for the match on the Wimbledon app couldn't find it. Thanks for the correction, I was overly pessimistic too soon!

No, I think you ALL misunderstood.
I said Gulbis was DECLINING to blow it. That is, winning.
That said, he's a break down.

LF look at who Stan has played in those 5 setters though;
Rajeev Ram
Ivo Karlovic
Ruben Ramirez-Hidalgo
Evgeny Korolev
Vladimir Voltchkov
Flavio Cipolla
Nicolas Devilder
Sam Querrey
Donald Young
Mikhail Kukushkin
How can you possibly be losing to these players in 5 sets?
Rajeev Ram
Ivo Karlovic
Ruben Ramirez-Hidalgo
Evgeny Korolev
Vladimir Voltchkov
Flavio Cipolla
Nicolas Devilder
Sam Querrey
Donald Young
Mikhail Kukushkin

Yes I dont put Stan down as a choker...some matches you win, some you lose, he's not a 'top top' player after all where you would expect >60-70% 5 set wins. The biggest glaring gap there is actually his swiss team mate.

Wimbledon might aswell build a permanent super roof that stretches all through every court, every year the same long boring delays.

lol LF....it is a small Swiss team after all.
Still, Fed looking in fine fettle, not likely to need 5 setters at this rate.

Every time I saw that slip I winced. It all looked good, and Fed said it didn't hurt, but hopefully not stiff tomorrow.

When it comes to rain, Britain is in GOAT territory.
One of the reasons we struggle for tennis champions socal...rains outdoors alot, lack of indoor facilities. At least Murray had the sense to move to Barcelona to get a decent days play in.

That was what I was getting at. It is great that Centre Court has a roof though. Weather in the UK is always hit and miss though. I mean in recent years it has been generally very good.

It's an exaggerated problem. How often does the event fail to complete on time?
Obviously if you live in a desert you'll think it's wet here but in reality Britain has a very moderate climate.

I don't know my friend Craig, you have to come out here for 2 weeks of your winter or fall to see what good weather is. Today no humidity, sunny, and warm not hot. And guess what that was what the previous 3 months and next few months will be like. Plus since I live close to the water I don't get the smog of the inland cities.

People do moan about the British climate but I think it is very good. We get a fair mix of weather but never really the extremes. We can get hot weather but I prefer cooler conditions myself. Winter weather when we get snow we never really get it in the amounts seen in North America for example so a nice balanced climate in my opinion.

Some great rallies being played in the Roddick V Baker match. Baker will probably end up losing the match but he is playing some pretty darn good tennis considering the gulf between the two players.
