The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub, Oxford
First topic message reminder :
Hello and welcome to the Virtual Rugby Pub - a place where you can come in for a sly beverage and discuss whatever's on your mind, or just eavesdrop on the regulars if you fancy a break from all the rugby chat.
The Pub has made it's way to Oxford - the new location for newly promoted London Welsh.
The only rule in this pub is one of mutual respect for everyone in it, oh and no tampering with the montage of pictures of Lyn Jones above the bar.

And just catching up with the doubles news. Jonathan Marray through to the mens doubles! First time we've had a Brit in that for yonks too!
The odds on that happening would have been immense. I hope someone did. Love seeing the bookies shafted me.
There's a British bloke that's playing in the mixed doubles QF now too, would be great if he could make it 3 out of 3 for us today
Also been reading up that there's a record Welsh representation at the Olympics this year too, tis fab, starting to get really excited for the Olympics now!Still not sure if I'm going to go up to London during them though, just think it's going to be far too busy there. We shall see though, once Olympic fever grimps I might just have to make the journey...
Dreamer,
It has always been on my list of things to do in my life. Now, its just 50 mins away. So, Im going to stay with my niece & BF in Hackney during it. Just to feel the buzz. Its The Greatest Show On Earth.
If I can just get a ticket for the girlie beach-volleyball, I'll die a happy man.

Nice, I'm mainly in the 5 a side at the moment, a bit of tag rugby but not much full on stuff. I know nothing about Cirkcet but are you a batsman or bowler or an allrounder?

Ha I can't believe it's just 50 mins away for you. It's 4+ hours away for me!
Even if I don't get a ticket for anything, watching on the big screens or something could be a goer I guess.

Some events you don't need tickets but they are mainly the ones that venture outside the city or are in general terrain. Won;t be heading over but will get to one someday. Next time it's in Europe, Maybe if it ever makes it into Deutschland. It doesn't exactly have a great history when it comes to hosting it though!
Nice going CF, I will admit I am pretty bored by Cirkcet but 20/20 is alright watched the IPL a bit when it wason ITV4 and there was nowt to do. Lasith Malinga, Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Chris Gayle impressed me a lot. Malinga throws it like some weird baseball thrower. It's feicing sidearm!

I could've had two frees for the volleyball Gibs. Can't get the time off and despite the obvious attraction of watching it, it doesn't float my boat.
Great that we have another Welshman in the athletics squad though, after Gareth Warburton was successful in his appeal. I'm all about Britain obviously, but do particularly want Dai Greene etc to do well.
Pity about Cav again. He's not had much luck.

got to say the selection process has been a bit of a farce though. In the Taekwondo we've excluded the world no. 1
This was from a month back, but I think he's given up appealing the decision now

I would imagine so, I went to batting cages in Florida before and it's a great laugh but pretty difficult. The old hurling skills helped a bit but I wasn't great. He seems to get a great curve on it agains much like a baseball thrower (not a fan of baseball but reading Moneyball at the moment, great book and one for those who can underestimate the value of stats although it is more imprtant in baseball then other sports)
Boxing at the olmypics is where it's at. Katie for gold. For a woman who spends here days fighting both women and blokes she is pretty good looking. Extremely talented sports star, was on the Irish Women's football team too. We have some other great male boxers too, second time round for a few. Last time all our boxers lost to the eventual winners, some in controversial circumstances or incrddibly tight margins. Probably our best medal hopes.

Right, education time. 112 is the standard emergency number across Europe as Ozzie said. More importantly, if you are ringing from a mobile in an Emergency, then if you use 112, satellites will pick you up straight away so even if you dont know where you are you will be found.
We stress this in our First Aid training courses.

So is Billy's girlfriend frightened of him? I would be thinking he is Iron man or something after what he has gone through. Or just your average Clare man.
Irish have a history of being the first to get annoyed and get rid of people. We did it to Britain in the 20th century (some other countries later adapted militia tactics down by Irish and orchestrated by Tom Barry apparently). Although the Americans did do it a good 150 years before us.

I think it's a bit to do with the fact that I don't like the coverage he gets, it's far too much especially the way BBC and ITV fawn over him. I suppose it has a bit to do with the fact that I don't tend to support British teams/players.

You don't have to support him, you're neither Scottish or British.
As for myself, I always back Scottish athletes if there's no Irish competitor given I spent so much time there, but I think the reasons I do like him have little to do with his nationality. The media coverage is doing my head in. The Guardian tweeted "Andy Murray inspires quiet confidence in middle England". But I genuinely think he couldn't care less about the whole British finalist narrative.
What I like about Murray is he isn't into draping himself in any flag. He's a competitor who wants to win for himself first and foremost. I like that drive and heart he has. I'm not going to judge him based on what narrative people in the media choose to thrust upon him.

I don't think I would be the only Irish perso. I think it's like that in indivdual sports. I have no problem backing Wales or Scotland in the rugby. I don't know I suppose the old tension we have with Britain exists with some of us. I don't hate Murray or anything it's kind of like I can't support Murray as I'm not supposed to., you know he is "one of them" I love him as a player, talented and not all about power like some tennis players but he can mix it about. I just can't myself to support him it's the same for some Irish people. It's a bit weird!

I usually am Rav, but I suppose it's a bit different here, there are still a whole lot of things when it comes to Irish people supporting the English national team or anything like that. Ah well no worries anyway, wish him best of luck for the final, hope RF wins as I love him as a player, would like to see him get number 17. Won't be watching it live Cork V Clare far more important.

Question:
Would the Irish Bannana Republic (bit like Cymru really) have been better served, staying under British Rule and in the Commonwealth, under Our Queen?
I am starting to reason we would have been. For so many reasons.

Thomond, you ain't a racist bud, easy there. I'm not a racist either, I have a strong dislike for the French purely because they deserve it, of that I'm absolutely certaiin.
If you're a bit unsure about why you feel the way you do, it's hardly the result of being anything other than honest and yourself. Nobody can hang you for that.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub, Oxford
If we had stayed under British rule, I think Ireland would be a complete hellhole for a long time, there was a lot of unrest after the rising and the subsequent executions. We simply were unhappy with our standing under their rule. Now you could argue that our whole uprising with the IRA and everything would have unravelled soon after the treaty (I'm pretty sure Collins and Dev mentioned they only had a month of serious attacks left or something along those lines). So I think we could have ended up with a situation similar to Northern Ireland in the 70s and 80s except for the whole island. Of course Kia is probably the one to ask this question to she knows a lot more than us on historical topics.
I think we were going to get away from Britain at some stage. The whole course of history changed with Ireland doing it though, you would wonder would other countries have been "inspired" to try emulate the Irish if we hadn't been freed.
I kow Rav, it's a bit weird. It's kind of like they can support us but we can't support them! You see people cheering on United and other UK teams but they would be totally against supporting English national teams. It's a bit mad really. Of course you get clowns like this too
The irony there was great!

I think the longer Ireland is independent the less antipathy there will be. This is very dependent on the situation in NI. If stability continues, then there's no reason things won't change over the next few generations.
