The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub, Oxford
First topic message reminder :
Hello and welcome to the Virtual Rugby Pub - a place where you can come in for a sly beverage and discuss whatever's on your mind, or just eavesdrop on the regulars if you fancy a break from all the rugby chat.
The Pub has made it's way to Oxford - the new location for newly promoted London Welsh.
The only rule in this pub is one of mutual respect for everyone in it, oh and no tampering with the montage of pictures of Lyn Jones above the bar.

Antipathy is the wrong word to use Notch, it's not like we dislike them, it's just we can't really bring ourselves around to supporting them. Don't get me supported on Irish people supporting English sporting teams. Feicing barstoolers

Have to say that i just don't get the 'get behind the (insert nationality here) competitor because it will confer kudos on (insert matching nation). We - meaning inhabitants of UK - are exhorted with increasing hysteria to believe that the more medals won at the Olympic Games by a miniscule proportion of the population somehow increases the sporting credentials/international standing of a nation of overweight couch potatoes by some sort of vicarious osmosis. Sorry, how does that work, exactly?

We all have our window-lickers T.
Oh, and if it helps mate, being "English" wouldn't be the same if the rest of the world didn't detest "us" for something or other, if not everything.
Don't get me wrong, I haven't got a persecution complex or feck all like that, cause I've never been persecuted, but it does sort of fit in to the order of things that "England" seems to be the team that everyone likes to see beaten.
I wouldn't claim to understand it, but I do know "they" can't all be feckin wrong kidda.

Rav, you're a bit out of line there. It does have nothing to do with NI but to insinuate my family are all Brit haters is a bit out of line.

Thomond where has your dislike of Britain come from then? Is this a decision you have come to yourself? I can see things in your history of posting that would suggest a deep lying mistrust/hatred of Brits that would go before your birth!

I think that if the Good Friday Agreement hadn't been signed, if NI wasn't in what they like to call a 'post-conflict' phase, then the recent state visit of the Queen to Ireland would have been politically impossible. NI has been the main bone of diplomatic contention between the British and Irish since the partition of Ireland and if it can remain settled as an issue relations between Britain and Ireland will likely continue to improve. That will have a slow knock-on effect on perceptions of Britain in Ireland.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub, Oxford
Mistrust/Hatred? Not at all, I have nothing against Brits, sure half my family live in Britain, I have British cousins etc. Why would I hate them? They're basically the same country. I just couldn't support a Scot in tennis (not exclusively due to his nationality) and suddenly I'm a Brit hater?
I have nothing against the Birts, why would I? I don't support the English national football team and I wouldn't really support their Olympic team, I don't wish them ill or anything and I wish them luck in what is a great time to be British.
I don't support them England national team, I wish them and all other British countries well so I don't really see how I hate them. I have no problem with them really, I just wouldn't support them. Today boiled down to me preferring Tsonga as a player. Nothing else really.
Notch I actually think, that McGuinness meeting the Queen was as important. Rav, I was also incredibly proud when the Queen came over and it showed how far we had come.

Disliking any nation/race in its entirety is irrational. People are people. We are all the same - a spectrum of good, bad, etc. 'Patriotism is the last refuge of the scoundrel'. Hmm. Who said that anyway?

Rav, my dislike of the French started in the 11th century, they've done little since then to change my mind...
Thomond's been very honest and voluntarily laid himself a bit open to criticism by admitting that he doesn't know why he feels the way he does, that doesn't mean you should take advantage of that, if anything he deserves respect for his total honesty. It takes a strong person to admit they don't know it all...

You did! Just now.
I disagree that disliking an entire nation is irrational, race yes as we're all human, but nation? No, the French deserve everything they get, shoites to a man, woman and child, if a Frenchy hasn't shat on you, it's because he forgot.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub, Oxford
I thought it was implied I wanted them to win. Of course I do helps football in Ireland North and South. Why wouldn't I want NI or ROI to do well in sport?
I think a big deal has been made out of this, people came out with stuff like I hate or dislike people when I never said anything of the sort. I just said I didn't support someone. I didn't go against them really (fair enough I went agaisnt Murray but it's hard to watch a sport involving two different individuals as a neutral, different to watching team sports)
I apologise if I hurt or offended anyone, it wasn't my intention and this is probably coming off a lot worse over the internet then it would if we were actually out and about. I want to clarify once and for all that I have no problem with anything about Britain, I just don't necessarily support them or England. I don't think there's much more in it then that. I don't expect them to support Ireland, if they do great, if they don't no problem

Hi all,
Some interesting reading going on.
Its funny how close Ireland and Britain are in many ways. Much of the rugby world see's us as one and the same.
I know many Argentinian, French, Australians, South Africans etc that I work with refer to the "British Isles" or expect to come to Ireland when they hear a tour is to Britain.

Ya roysh Puuuma. Thats cos yer a posh English-type gal, living off the fat of a well-to-do Scotsmon.
Love you long time.
Jayzus.I love this Pub. No poli-thicks or religion me arse.
Its a sweet little mystery how we all get on really. Disparate. Desparate. Separate. And yet, somehow... Close.
Met this Birt feicer in a Cork Hotel. We got well pished. He had a go at me for chattin up his GF. Two obnoxious feckers on de lash.
Love his music. He's gone now.

Here is a question about the Olympics. Who does an NI athlete represent? Can they make a choice between GB and Ireland? They are part of the UK, but not part of Great Britain. Do they represent Ireland (in a similar fashion to rugby) or GB in the majority of cases?

I think most guys in athletics go for GB but it depends on the sport I'd say. I would imagine boxers box for ROI as the boxing federation is an all Irish organisation. I don't think a fuss would be made if they boxed for Britain. I wouldn't have any problems and I imagine most wouldn't it's their right as a NI citizen.

On a side note I am watching Ireland vs SA 2010 and I think David Wallace is seriously missed for both Munster and for Ireland. I wouldn't have traded him for any 7 in the world and I genuinely mean that. He just had it all IMO. Massive loss.

That was something I said that got lost witihin the kerfuffle. We're pretty mcuh the same really, I only really have problem supporting the soccer team like seeing the Wleh and Scots do well and I felt happy when England won the WC. I suppose soccer is more parochial though.
