The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub, Oxford
First topic message reminder :
Hello and welcome to the Virtual Rugby Pub - a place where you can come in for a sly beverage and discuss whatever's on your mind, or just eavesdrop on the regulars if you fancy a break from all the rugby chat.
The Pub has made it's way to Oxford - the new location for newly promoted London Welsh.
The only rule in this pub is one of mutual respect for everyone in it, oh and no tampering with the montage of pictures of Lyn Jones above the bar.

That clock is one of the nastiest things I've seen in terms of coming from supporters of rugby. That's horrible.

Interesting by Donovan Bailey. "Its not 10 secs to me. Its a Week. A Month. A Year". Excellent perception and perspective.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub, Oxford
Let me step in to 'defend' the Kidney Clock.
Whoever made it, almost certainly didn't make it to be cruel. It's something made in the heat of emotion. I've made so many stupid mistakes in my life, said so many hurtful or offensive things without even realising what I'm doing, that the idea of me judging whoever made that is faintly ridiculous. So I won't make a hypocrite of myself. But I think I was always thoughtless (even insensitive) in these instances. Not nasty.
I do believe the site is thoughtless and insensitive. But I don't think it's nasty, at least not in intent. I still would like to thank Kidney for his best efforts when he does go. We do need to keep a sense of perspective, I'm not sure Kidney Clock is helping.

I don't think the Kidney clock is any more bitter than the reactions I have seen against referees recently in all honesty.

The most famous British Weightlifter was Precious McKenzie. A bit before your time Rory
Hmmm, I didn't know he competed for England before NZ. I did know he was born in South Africa though
Have I mentioned that I have Beach Volleyball tickets?

Well I don't know if it's something positive but we've been discussing hedgehogs and my dad's just done a hedgehog impression. I can't even properly describe it, he's not even drunk, but.....: laugh:

I can tell you though, I could run a 2.4 km run "Staaldak webbing en geweer" (Army kit) in 9 minutes and 30 seconds.

But in all seriousness people on here are happy enough to criticise referees all day long, and comment on how they spoil things and it ends up just being an attack on the referee. They get more abuse than anyone else in sport and people seem to think that is acceptable. Sometimes their criticism is justified, but a lot of the time it is just bitter. I have seen the same people on these forums say we are unfair on Kidney, despite the fact he isn't doing a good job.
Why is it acceptable for a referee to receive such strong unrelenting criticism, but not a coach? And for the record, I don't think anyone on here has ever been abusive towards Kidney. Most of the guys on here seem to realise he seems like a very likeable character. This is proved by his relationship with his players too. As a coach however, he is not doing a good job.
Just my views on it.

Discuss.

If we put the question the other way around Rory why is it ok for coaches to receive such unrelenting criticism but not referees.
Why is it ok for anyone to have to deal with that?

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub, Oxford
Yeah exactly, referees get it the worst by far but nobody really says anything. If a player or coach gets criticism though, some people go nuts.

True but only partly true. You won't convince many people that our boxers accept mediocrity for example. Rugby and Football = yes we have though.
However developing a winning doesn't mean anyone has to be disrespectful or let oneself down.

It isn't, that isn't really the point I was trying to make, but I seem to have accidentally made it appear that way.
I am trying to say that the very people on here who are okay with referees getting such criticism would also get very upset when certain players or coaches receive even a fraction of the criticism that a referee would get. Referees do the best job they can for the most part, and so do coaches. As do players. Sometimes people can forget that.
I don't really think Kidney has received any real abuse or very bitter criticism on here. I think you disagree with me there though.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub, Oxford
But I do think Gibson is right. In rugby we have accepted mediocrity and the "underdog" status. Which will get us nowhere. There is a clear difference between real champions of sport and everyone else. The champions don't make excuses, they accept the blame themselves, and they make sure it doesn't happen again. Then they win.

I do. At times I think the criticism has crossed a line.
I won't say any more.

True, not the few who have made it to the pinnacle of their sport, but certainly true of the many who didn't?
