If you are around 40 and love Boxing..
First topic message reminder :
Iron Mike Tyson.. has to be the man who made Boxing a Sport that enthralled the public.... Never mind
Larry Holmes he is todays Klitschko good but a tad dull..A young Mike Tyson would have beat the 3 of them in a single year
Dont give me Marciano, Tunney, Johnson,Baer, nonsence he would have beat them 4 in a single year too... Ali, Foreman, Frazier and Liston.. they are the sort of fights dreams are made of.. for me Ali beats him.. So if you around 40 tell the truth Tyson got you hooked on Boxing he was the King Kong, he was the Baddest Man on Earth..And Lord know we need another one right now...

The Galveston Giant wrote:Congrats Chris , I'm only 26 but look and feel 40, and chris, thats partially down to the kids. Tyson definitely got me intersted in boxing mainly due to my dad's books and the old cavendish boxers series which was out on vhs, lying about the house, in his prime he would give anybody a run their money, but after gaining knowledge about other fighters throughtout history i feel he would have come up short on many occasions, it's easy to kick a man when he is down but Tyson only has himself to blame, he brought a lot of positive publicity to the sport in the 80's which may have been lacking otherwise.
Cavendish sets - blimey i remember them - i have got the enitre collection on VHS up in the loft! I even got them all again on DVD when they were branded as deagostini. Good times.

I have them up the loft too Dazstarr, wasn't on the ball when Deagostini brought out the DVD's, bit gutted. Only a couple short of the full collection on vhs, certainly were the good times mate.

I think you can still get them from here GG:
http://www.deagostini.co.za/boxers/
If not, they are all over ebay mate.
I bet they will bring them out on blu-ray at some point in the next couple of years.
Failing that you can buy mine for a small fee of $1 million dollars!
The magazines they came with were a damn good read. Feeling like watching a few now!

Vitali beats him IMO, and haye, and any other boxer who doesnt get scared and fightend by him. Aslong as they can ride out the storm, they would be fine

At the time as I remember one of the biggest events in boxing was Tyson vs Frank Bruno. Tyson was famous, but he was probably eclipsed on these shores at least by Bruno. The endless saga of would he win a world title, the christmas pantos, famous catchphrases and the like. Even though he was like the 90's England cricket team, he still inspired a great many people to take an interest in boxing.
In those days if anyone was asked to mention an international boxer, invariably the answer would be Mike Tyson. The public seemed to buy into the image that he was dangerous and violent person, who no one would want to bump into in a remote alleyway. He's still a popular fighter in the UK now, often returning for exhibitions. But, as I recall Marvin Hagler was also a popular fighter, Larry Holmes, Barry McGuigan.

He was in the UK recently. Some interesting Q&As:Joshsmith wrote:Do not remember Bruno doing panto untill he finished Boxing please give the man some repect.. Biggest events in Boxing Tyson V Bruno..ok??

He had 52 wins in the amateurs, 50 by KO.
His toughest fight was against Duran. He struggled in the fight because Roberto was countering his jab over the top with a right hand. But once his corner adjusted for his to fake the jab twice or three times, he pulled ahead. If it wasn't for the last 3 rounds, he felt it would've been a close decision. But his conditioning pulled him clear. At one point in the fight Roberto said " Do you know who I am? I'm Roberto Duran!" To which he responded with a hook to the stomach.
Tony Sibson hit the hardest. Although his antics at the weigh in did anger him, he now forgives him.
Mugabi hit him the single hardest punch he'd felt with an uppercut. It rocked him, but his conditioning pulled him through.
His favourite fighters were Ali and Frazier. He tried to imitate Ali, but ended up preferring Frazier's style.
He dislikes SRL.
He regrets not switching stances sooner in the SRL fight. And isn't sure he won it.
He hated the Minter atmosphere, although regrets saying he'd never come back to Britain.
He stopped watching boxing in 1986 and feels since that time the HW division has been full of unfit fighters that allowed the clumsy Russians to take over.
He didn't make the Olympic squad because of Sugar Ray Seals.

Hope that turns out to be true in the very near future, Windy, as my missus has just told me that we'll be getting a new addition to our families in November. Christ, I thought I was a pauper already!
Congrats Chris. I seem to remember posting with you on the kids subject not so long ago - my advice was to have your 20's to yourself then have them, I see you totally ignored that advice! No matter, when the little one comes along everything else will seem insignifanct, it's magical and you wont regret it - pauper or not! Our son will be one in november when yours comes along, time is really flying but its been great, you'll see what I mean when your own little one looks up at you and smiles and starts getting his own little personality, nothing comes close. Good luck with it all mate

Ha ha, can safely plead 'not guilty' to ignoring the advice you gave me, Sugar Boy; totally unexpected, a bit of a freak occurance but it's happening now, and I'm happy about it really, even if two or three years more down the line would have been slightly more convenient timing. Still, if I can enjoy it half as much as you seem to be I reckon I'll be a seriously contented fella come November time!
Cheers for the wishes, mate. Hope your kiddo isn't giving you too many sleepless nights!

In the UK, the Bruno vs Tyson fight was a big event. He would have been the second ever British heavweight champion. Hometown sporting contests usually garner the main public interest. People still talk about Henry Cooper vs Muhammad Ali. I believe Bruno was a regular panto performer during his boxing career. He was also famous because of his larger than life media personality and acting career, but primarily due to the boxing.
