He is #14 in the YTD race. Do you think he can make it into the WTF this year?

I think he is the player on tour who plays tennis mostly like I do. Just a pure grace

Ive always liked him, but not because of his game.
Its always good to see a player who doesn't rush and go kamikaze with the grunting like a certain clay moonballer!
He is really the French David Ferrer, except that he turns it on against Federer and plays poor against Murray.

Well Twice he caught Federer on 2008, Fed was so generous on 2008 that he gave wins for will to many players let alone Simon Giles.
The horrible part is Ferrer could never catch Fed on off day, Ferrer is way way better player than Simon, otherwise yes they both have similar kinda styles. Simon is more successful against Fed while Ferrer is more successful against Nadal. Ferrer could beat anybody barring Fed on his day on most surfaces barring grass, you can't say the same story with Simon.

Simon also caught Federer @AO 2011 and almost took him out.

Re: Gilles Simon Discussion Thread
@ LF, yup I watched that match, Fed schooled Simon in the 1st two sets but thw mosquito made Fed pay badly when Fed's level dropped off in the next 2 sets, Fed was so lucky to scrap the 5th set for a win.
Fed's worst years were 2008 and 2011 ,n some how Simon caught Fed on those two years and never met Fed playing his best, no excuses Simon deserved the win on Fed on both occasions, but whats sad is Ferrer could never catch Fed on such occasions, poor Ferrer got nothing to show off against fed on h2h when several players including benny, Giles, Fish etc,.. have on their cv.
Ferrer never had the luck to face Fed on 2008, and only faced Fed on 2011 WTF, wat else can be said of his luck.
We have seen it in the past, 1 win over Fed is enough for most players to believe in themselves to go for a kill when the face the mastero next time around. DP did it twice a row, Giles did it twice a row, Benny almost did it twice a row [I guess Davy did it as well]. So who knows if only Ferrer might have tasted a win on fed's bad day he would have believed in his game more and end up winning more matches against top players.

Re: Gilles Simon Discussion Thread
Nobody expects Gilles Simon to set the world of tennis alight - he would have done so by now if there had ever been a possibility of that. BUT he is undoubtedly a quality professional and has turned in some impressive performances. Whether or not he can return to something near his best ranking of 6 ......only time will tell ....
Because we so often tend to focus on happenings involving the really big names, it's all too easy to forget just how much ability, dedication & sheer hard work is needed to get inside the top 100 and then push on to the top 20. Simon has shown a lot of consistency with at least one tour title in each year since 2007.
ps Olly - hope you've told Gilles that his style of play is very much like your own.... I imagine that would spur him on to even better things !
(only joking of course .... )

I remember his match against Nadal @USO, where he was happy with either a win or a loss. He had just received news of a baby being to born to him and his partner.
He was very relieved to have lost that match, and I was happy for him to go so see the baby.

Ferrer had his chances against Federer in Cincy 2009 or Madrid 2010.

was that the same year in which Fed schooled Djoko in the finals? ,if then Ferrer certainly would have had no chance even if he would have played his best.

Re: Gilles Simon Discussion Thread
I find Gilles Simon strangely compelling to watch and I don't really know why because he doesn't have the type of game that I generally really enjoy.
He is great entertainment and a gritty competitor. Actually I enjoy all the French players, different as Simon is to Gasquet or Llodra to Tsonga

I find Simon has the thinnest legs ever known on a tennis player...the kind of legs you see on an upside down chicken in a butcher's window. No wonder he can run all day...he's got no weight to move!
A nice player though - if a little too much of a counterpuncher for my liking (doesnt really have a big shot), and not averse to the odd contentious comment or two re: female pay, etc

@Lags and Lyd
I don't differ from you guys, I am not a fan of counter punching and certainly not a fan of Simon Giles style of play, but I do like his attitude against big players, he has given the favorites a little rough ride in the past.

Dimitrov bores me same way as Gasquet, one handed backhands with little to no ability on forehands!
