Without Sounding Cliched ...
Why do pundits and commentators think that if they say "Without sounding like the cliche" before a cliche, it makes it less of a cliche?
In fact, saying "Without sounding like a cliche" is a cliche. If anything, it just makes the cliche to follow more cliched.
Without sounding like a cliche, I'm sick of all these cliches.

At the end of the day it's a game of two halves. If you earn the right to go wide you'll be fine.

South African Sports Captains are all instructed in the art of constructing interviews entirely from cliches: eg. We got good go-forward, the boys stepped up to the plate, they really put their hands up, and gave 110%...pretty much sums up every post match inerview I've heard.

I think it would be funny to hear post match comments such as "We were feckin fantastic today. We went out to kick thier 'A' and, damn, we just stuck the ball up their rump all match long. They sucked. Their players suck, their coaches suck, their women suck. Could have beaten them today with one testicle tied behind my back."

Did you ever see the controversial winning speech by Darren Lockyer in the Bronco's 1993 NRL final win over St George? He took the microphone and start to shout "St George Can't Play!" at the top of his voice over and over.

It's a bit like starting a sentence with "Without meaning any disrespect, ..." then going on to disrespect someone - the same applies with the use of the word "rude" in that circumstance - always amuses meanotherworldofpain wrote:Why do pundits and commentators think that if they say "Without sounding like the cliche" before a cliche, it makes it less of a cliche?

I loved Brendan Ventners interview of clichés:

Talk about taking the p#@s
Brendan being passively ironic to the sport administrators, over criticism of a previously 'outspoken' apparently, interview ! hahahah !

Re: Without Sounding Cliched ...
One of the stupidest things you hear (and not just in rugby) is when a team concede a score just before half time and the commentator says that it's the 'worst time' to concede a score. Actually, isn't it quite a good time to concede (if you're going to concede at all), seeing as you're just about to go in to the changing rooms for team talk? It lets you know what you're up against, whereas if you were to concede just after half time, you'd have gone into the changing rooms a few minutes earlier thinking you were the cat's miaow and had nothing to worry about.

Re: Without Sounding Cliched ...
And why do losses apparently become palatable "at the end of the day".
What happens then, exactly?
The other one I like is "we're here to win matches".
As opposed to just enjoying wrestling with grown men in skintight sportswear?

Here's one for the moral victors, 'we won on the park but not on the scoreboard'...mmm, that's a loss I'm afraid. And most losing coaches are always 'proud of the boys'.

"You always find it in the last place you look"
Of course, why would you keep searching once you found it?

Whenever I'd lost something when I was younger, my dad would ask, "where did you last see it?" Well if I knew that, it wouldn't be lost!

That depends. The last phone I lost had Google Lattitude enabled. So I was able to say that it fell out of my pocket in a minicab, and the last trace location was in Neasden. So I know it was either "lifted" by the cabbie, or the passenger he picked up after me
Of course, the phone I lost either in a Melbourne Airport transit lounge, or on the plane between there and Dubai, or a Dubai transit lounge is in a much bigger "haystack"

I once lost my phone- called up the insurance told them i must have lost it near or on a golf course on the south coast. However a day or two later i was walking past a local street and heard a phone ringing- i found my original phone covered in gravy inside a kfc bargain bucket stuck up a tree! My mind was blank as to what happened. I was obviously spiked the night of the incident or something!
The phone company also told me my phone couldnt work because they had blocked it- did they fk!! but anyway i wouldnt have found it otherwise

I drove over my phone once, and decided I better make sure it is "uneconomical to repair" so I reversed just to make sure.

Actually i have driven over my phone at a services in europe on a motorway- i went up two junctions before realising i had lost my phone- i went back to the services and found it- but upon finding it i ran over the darn thing!!!
Nice work tho bilty - you gotta make sure the phone is well and truely knackered, Its all about getting the quick relacemnet and a nice new phone, rather than waiting a month or two on repair

Precisely, now if I can just get my HD decoder sorted out, the bloody thing is ver slow these days, I have insurance on it so it can be replaced, but it has happened twice now where I take it in and then have to wait for them to "service" it.
Wonder how I will explain driving over that though.

That's an idea EBOP, if you send me your shotgun I can say I accidentally shot the thing.
I'll have to do an affidavit though to say I really, really wasn't angry when it happened.
