Without Sounding Cliched ...
First topic message reminder :
Why do pundits and commentators think that if they say "Without sounding like the cliche" before a cliche, it makes it less of a cliche?
In fact, saying "Without sounding like a cliche" is a cliche. If anything, it just makes the cliche to follow more cliched.
Without sounding like a cliche, I'm sick of all these cliches.

That's the one, I'll have to explain though that the thing jumped a 6 ft fence, ran up the driveway, kicked dow the garage door, then ran up the stairs and kicked my Decoder to pieces, then I'll have to go hunting tonight, shoot the thing and somehow drag it back to my place upt he stairs.
Meh, sounds like too much work, I'll just be more patient.

Dear god, we'd better get some rugby to talk about soon.
These threads are becoming more bizarre by the day.
Not that I have a problem with that.

Id love to see you try and con the insurance with that story- i have a feeling the more crazy the story is the more chance they have of not disputing it!

Re: Without Sounding Cliched ...
You'll probably have to make the story more complicated before they will question it.
Firstly you'll have to break a few more things, they will want to know how the Wildebeest got inbetween two cars without damaging it, so you'll have to damage the cars.
You'll have to break a few tiles, maybe a window or two, some kitchen equipment as it is obvious it would kick open the fridge for some greens.
A broken tap as it wanted some water. etc.

Re: Without Sounding Cliched ...
Another saying I hate is whenever I got into an argument she'd scream "Oh you're always right" at me.
Well if I thought I was wrong why the feck would I be arguing!
Also hate "You always gotta have the last say" too. That's reverse psychology bs so that if you want to prove them wrong on that you lose the argument.
How good was the phone Biltong?

Also they never learn.
Her " if you watch one more game of Rugby I am leaving you"
With divorce rates as high as it is in SA, you would have thought they would learn from it.

Re: Without Sounding Cliched ...
I used to say to my (then hormonal teenaged) daughter:
"... I'll just finish, then hand over so you can have the last word"
which often was met with either complete silence (plus death look), or a collapse into laughter.
Naturally I do not try that with the missus though.

Whenever I get into an argument I know the ladies are always screaming different words than the time before, but all I get is the same old crazy.
Surely that qualifies as a cliche...

Remind me not to arguing with you again. I can't trusting to your motive any longer.

Re: Without Sounding Cliched ...
A couple of infuriating cliches
1 - From the wife: 'I'm not going to tell you why I'm mad at you. You should know...' FFS, I'm not a mind-reader, I'm a bloke. Emotions and empathy are not my strongest suits.
2 - More generally (including sports coaches and players, but more especially politicians after something has gone wrong): 'Lessons will be learned'

Easiest way to deal with it when a loved one is saying silly things, alla Venter, is to take whatever she has said seriously in a really facetious, literal and over the top way. Either makes them realise they are being ridiculous, or more often winds them up, which can also be fun

10 points each for any poster who can name:
(a) which game this post match quote come from
(b) which newspaper it appear in
(c) who was the journalist repsonsible
"In probably the greatest upset of all time, [team] came out fired up and never let up for the full [N] minutes despite having no chance on paper. After having their backs to the wall for the first spell they found another gear, taking hold of the game by the scruff of the neck with a grip they never relinquished. [They] never looked back, leaving nothing out on the pitch as they bled sweat to clinch a game that ultimately mattered to [them] more. In the final analysis there was only one team in it. ...[match description]... Credit must go to [the opposition] who never gave up despite looking shell shocked for much of the latter part of the match. At the end of the day this foregone conclusion was anything but, reminding us that on the day a team who wants it enough and play for each other can overcome seemingly insurmountable odds and that [this sport] is never a foregone conclusion."
