If Murray becomes no.1 in 2013
First topic message reminder :
I can understand the title is kinda confusing and strange, but my funny feeling says Murray will become number 1 sooner or later in 2013.
Murray is slowly getting used to failures and thats actually making him stronger than weaker a bit like his coach Lendl itself. As expected Federer will have one last big run before he retires, its difficult to see him repeat 2012 in 2013 even if he wins few slams here and there, that makes the other 3 fight for the pride again. Rafa for some reason looked knackered to me except for the FO, Djoko looks like a spend force already and Murray is the only one I see as improved his game from 2011.
So the interesting question is, if Murray makes no.1 do you guys think he will hold on to it longer than the other 2 [Nadal/Djoko] did? or will he last the similar amount of time like he lasted in No.2? Slams might be a bit tougher for Murray, but like we saw this year Federer achived no.1 more with success in masters and 500's than too many slam wins, which Murray can certainly do it. Four-Five masters win coupled with 4 semi-finals in slams will give him close to 8k points and wins in 500's and 250's and WTF can help him rack up points close to 10k and if the other 3 battle slams in proportional manner, Murray can easily get to no.1
I think if and when Murray makes the top spot he will cling on to it longer than expected of him, just for the reason he knows how difficult it was to get there and he won't hence goof it up easily. I see Murray handling pressure of expectation better than the other 2 [Rafa/Djoko], I tip Murray to take the no.1 with a Slam title [like Fed did] next year ,USO will be the likely case.
Update
Now Murray himself feels he can target the no.1 and will try hard to achieve it,

Cheers BB
@Hawk, Murray fans have are more mature than they are portrayed. I became a mini Murray Fan after his Wimbledon effort, I kept saying Murray is a very good grass court player, lets see how the Olympics gohead now.
Murray might not get to no.1 that easy, but if Murray win 4-5 masters No.1 is not out of reach, considering how top 3 will knock each other out in slams in the upcoming year.
Btw Hawk lets have a chilled beer and relax and watch how it all turns up

Hawkeye did you agree with my article (in sport pulse) on Murray?
I know you're a stern critic, but do you think it's fair?

Good article. The only thing I would probably say is that it has often been a failure by Murray to bring his best to the slam matches which is the difference between his bo5 and bo3 records against the top 3. Certainly in many of the more recent nadal matches he has been awful.

Re: If Murray becomes no.1 in 2013
Judging from all the Murray interviews I would say that Murray will become No 1 in 1913.

Sorry that's as far as I got - you should be able to work out the gross error. It can be made acceptable by the addition of two words.

I feel very honoured that you've asked my opinion and well done for the article. I do think it's fair. I would say that using the Murray wins over Nadal at the US in 2008 and AO 2010 as evidence for future slam results does show Murray's poor showing in slams against the top 3. I think I've spoke to you just recently about why I think they are not representative. Also my view is that Murray has technical weaknesses in his game. All the talk of mental weakness or even (not in your article) physical weakness is a bit of a diversion. I'm willing to talk more but wary of upsetting people.

I wouldn't have thought you need be overly concerned about "upsetting people" HE.
What I can say with confidence is that many of your contributions tend to generate various reactions in various members, although getting "upset" is unlikely to be chief amongst them. Can't speak for everyone - but in my particular case it's much more a distinct sense of deja-vu to be honest.

Sorry Hawkeye You need to visit this thread to understand why Murray struggles to win slams where as his competitors are winning it wasy, its all the first slam that matters.

Re: If Murray becomes no.1 in 2013
Personally no IC. He has improved all his weak areas this year... The forehand is unrecognisable, the first serve is more reliable, the second serve is deeper, he's closer to the baseline and much of the negativity has gone.
But still.... He's not a great clay player. The other 3 will always gain more points on the clay and I think that will make it near impossible for him to reach no.1

May be your rite Danny, but I see the other 2 are a bit saturated and I don't think so Djoko /Nadal can improve any further, in comparision Murray is improving and improving,Fed's golden final moments not gonna last longer it has to come to an end sometimes and I see Murray will cease the initiative once Fed declines.

Hopefully it will be Murray and Fed at the top, much more interesting than the other 2. I don't think he needs to be able to do much on clay to be number 1, not if he wins everywhere else.

Re: If Murray becomes no.1 in 2013
So you don't see Murray's relatively average clay game as a hindrance? Remember he's NEVER reached even a final of any clay tournament in his entire professional career.
He'd have to have a truly amazing grass and HC season to make up for those points. Hope you're right, but I doubt it.

If Murray makes to No.1 that confidence will carry him on Clay as well, he won't lose to players like Ferrer if he reaches the top spot, in clay he is not losing to Jack and Jill players only the best on clay beats him, Djoko was like this few years back but now he is one of the best clay courters on tour.

Well, hope you're right.
I do believe if Murray beats Federer tomorrow his game will soar. It could be his Djokovic moment (Djokovic's game took off after the home Davis cup win) but although I remain utterly convinced he'll win slams, I don't think he'll make number 1.

It never really stopped Sampras
Personally, I don't see Andy as a dominant 100 week No.1 - but you can see him getting 10000 points in a year, i.e. 3000 more than he has now, simply by winning a couple of Slams, which can be enough to get there
It depends who his rivals are. Remember, Andy looks worse on clay simply because in every event he competes where the Top 3 are, two of which are arguably the best clay courters ever
I had a look at who competed in some South American clay court event. The Murray of 2009, would have won that
