Double swoop for the Tigers
Tigers have brought in Brett Deacon and Patt Phibs as injury cover ahead of the new seson.
Deacon who will provide initial cover for the injured Croft and Newby (possibly Crane depending on how long it takes him to return to full fitness) has been given a contract for the season and will be helpful in international windows with Croft and Waldrom likely to be called up to the England squad. The former Tigers and Gloucester 6/8 will be warmly welcommed back at WR where he has played all but two seasons of his professional career and where his brother is a key player.
Phibs is a short term signing (4 months) and will be there to cover the injuries to Ben Youngs (out until October and then likely to be on international duty until December) and for young academy 9 Scott Steele the regular 4th choice who has missed all of pre season training so far with an ankle ligament injury picked up at the end of last season. Phibs is unlikely to see anything more than LV Cup action unless one of Harrison or Young are injured.

Think Phibbs is an excellent cover signing for you, Sam - was impressed with him during his stint at Exe, bags of experience and usually can be relied upon to make the right decision and not waste positionformerly known as Sam wrote:Tigers have brought in Brett Deacon and Patt Phibs as injury cover ahead of the new seson.

Yeah, he'll do nicely for the 4 months he's here. Don't think he'll be able to push past Harrison or Young though. Could be a big year for Harrison as he played quite a lot last season and played well. If he has gain a little more muscle this off season he could really be an asset. Nice to have an experienced 9 in the squad with all our current options 23 or under.

I was really disappointed when Glaws let Deacon go. He's not the best player, but you can never fault his commitment - a trait missing at times from the Glaws pack last season. He's also got a hell of a left hook on him, so is the kind of player you need in your squad.

Re: Double swoop for the Tigers
gowales, if your pack is up against it then sometimes you need someone who is big, hard and not going to back down to get stuck in. If that leads to a little on field boxing then so be it. His brother Louis is exactly the same and neither of them are known for having dodgey disciplinary records so they obviously know what they are doing.
Good to have him back to add some grit to the pack though I am a little disappointed that young de Carpienter won't be given more of a run out early doors as he is a big boy with loads of pace (former England 7s).
Might be a bit unlikely Mickado as I think he is a born and bred Aussie who only left in 2011 to spend a season with the Chiefs. He is only short term injury cover so I'm not to fussed. It's better to bring him in then see some 17 year old get mullered because we've run out of options at 9.

Great to see Brett back, even if it is just injury cover+
