Mitchell/Spencer sacked by Lions
http://www.planetrugby.com/story/0,25883,3551_7957563,00.html
Lions have now sacked Carlos Spencer along with the conditioning coach, together with Suspending John Mitchell. After a revolt by the Players
Lions won a major tournament under them last year, but are bottom again this year what went wrong?Mitchell has a reputation as a successful forwards Coach with England during there great period and was All Blacks Coach 2002-3 with good win Stats for the period,Before 2003 sacking post RWC.Carlos Spencer was one of the most inspired and talented All Black players ever a true Genius but one that also made complete boners. Not sure about his Coaching credentials but would think they were good.Comments from our SA fans please.

Re: Mitchell/Spencer sacked by Lions
Maybe they just had crap players?
Those coaches sound pretty good and to be fair to Carlos it wasn't their attack that let them down it was defence, organisation and game management.
Some one has to come bottom of the log and maybe that's just what the Lions are there to do? I'm not sure if sacking the whole coaching team will sort anything.
Lastly I imagine that coming near bottom every season means that they struggle to hold on to player so maybe this doesn't help?

Well they do say a good player does not make a good coach.
Yes Carlos Spencer was a good, Great player. Maybe his coaching methods are not as good as they could be.

Re: Mitchell/Spencer sacked by Lions
Seems a bit harsh on Spencer, the couple of times I've seen the Lions play they looked fairly good in attack with individual error hampering them most. Agree with Yappy, from what I saw it was a lack of organisation in defence and tactical flaws that let them down.
Then again Spencer was a Kiwi in SA, he was always going to struggle to win them over.

Ain't there issues with the Lions possibly not being in the Super XV next season? Could this be a case of cutting costs and not actually down to how good/bad a coach is?

Apparently their captain has stood down, 2 players are leaving/left and they haven't got another coach either (conditioning coach I think)

And the Lions have been on the verge of bankruptcy for a while now...Generally not a good situation there.
