The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Games of the XXX Olympiad Pub, Stratford
First topic message reminder :
The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Games of the XXX Olympiad Pub, a place where you can come in for a sly beverage and discuss whatever's on your mind, or just eavesdrop on the regulars if you fancy a break from all the rugby chat.
This week the pub has set up in the heart of the Olympic Precinct at Stratford, where we can watch the world's greatest athletes do their thing and strut their stuff during the best Modern Olympics Games ever.
"Citius, Altius, Fortius" has been the motto for the modern Olympic Games since their beginning in 1896 - and let's hope it stays that way.
The only rule in this pub is one of mutual respect for everyone in it, oh and no tampering with the pictures of Jessica Ennis, Kieran Behan, Oscar Pistorius, Bradley Wiggins, Leryn Franco, Michelle Jenneke, Victoria Pendleton, Aaron Cruden, Katie Taylor, Misty May, Usain Bolt, Mo Farah, Krisztián Berki (on that horsey thingy) and the the Winner of the Gold Medal at Wimbledon - Andy Murray.

They can keep the multiple teams in beach volleyball if we can put multiple cycling and rowing squads out...

Tis true, watching Ospreys pile tries on against Edinburgh's B team in a meaningless tie that one side isn't really trying to win is very interesting Gibbo

Nice one bud. I think we should have the pub in Agen. Just to mark the moment. NO more Paddy Pubs!

Yeah gibbo, we need to somehow cast aside the fear of losing. What's that? "No relegation".
More teams play the so called ''kick and chase' game than peopke think. It's not just Sarries, but they won a title with it. So plenty of teams adopted it last year, my lot too - most of us got fed up yelling "Don't ******* kick it!!!"
Couldn't wait to get to the pub after many games at Gomez Park last season. That can't be right
And the Aussie girls were well beaten in the last quarter. Had the Yanks rattled for most of that game though.

Tart! They were going for the Heino. Just haven't quite got that Irish PRO12 v HC balance right yet, is all.

I think you can get past the name thing. It's not like GAA handball is massive here. They could just call it European Handball. Most schools have the facilities for it and it would suit the Irish person's skill set.
I think it could help with ball handling skills for future rugby players as well.

Inverdale can at times be insufferable. I wish they'd get Lineker into the stadium in place of him.
Rudisha ran a wonderful race to win the 800M and break the world record. That was better than Bolt's gold medal on Sunday.
The 200M tonight promises to be an incredible event. This'll be better than the 100M.

That was fab, hats off to him! I hated the 800m at school! Pacing it right is so difficult! Gimme the long distances any day.

Did you see the silver and bronze medalists were 18 and 17 respectively.
Did anyone just see that story about Peter Norman that Australian? What a fantastic story of hoe he helped John Carlos and Tommy Smith with the Black Salute and lost his career because of it. Those two then were pall bearers at his funeral. Beautiful stuff.

Err, and what is that jacket 'Twonk' is wearing!!! Horrible.
Twonk, more than any other (w)anchorman has to get in on the 'next big (English) thing'.
He came fourth ffs. No medal, no cigar.
Love the relays btw.

They just showed that Notch. That really was quite something.
Hound,
I think the relays are probably the most exciting event in the athletics.
They're doing a bit on black athletes here. Eddie Butler really is perfectly suited for narrating these stories.

Most sports help each other in someway. Handball, the Olympic way is great for ball handling and from what I have seen fitness played at a ferocious pace.
Irish style reactions, you think palying squash is hard try it without a fecking racket/bat!
USA,USA,USA! Scored a great goal in the football, well finished and Japan are coming at them. I'll say it again, women's international football is more entertaining tham the men's.

Micko, watching it in a pub in Exe. I was watching that montage through the window while having a very un-Olympic smoke
I missed Butler's comments, but I agree, he would do that sort of thing justice.
Weird being in Exeter atm as I've been helping all the visitors to London with their Tube directions for the last two weeks.
'Trust me, you want Harlesden for the shooting".
Only kidding. I've loved everyone coming to London for this.

Peter Norman sacrificed his career for something he believed in, way before most of us honky's time. Easy to do it now. Impossible and career madness then. But he did it. Hero.
Mon Blake. Believe. Do im!

Bolt started off well which is unusual for him. Go on Usain boy, great stuff from the man, same as Johnson's in Atlanta! You feel awful for Blake if he wasn't up against the best ever he would be remembered as a great sprinter.
Carli Lloyd makes it 2-0 to the USA. They have got gold.

Jamaica 1-2-3! Magical stuff. Bolt is unbelievable. Gotta feel for Blake. He would be a major star in any other generation.
Ulster just won in France, beating Bayonne 20-15. Considering it was mainly fringe players out there with the first choice guys coming off at half-time and that the TOP14 starts next week that is a really sterling effort. Very encouraging indeed!

I agree. He has the athletic stature of Ali - without the brains and charisma. Should calm it down a bit to suit his intellectual measure.
But I'm a Universal snob.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Games of the XXX Olympiad Pub, Stratford
Gibbo,
A lot of times people tell me to be realistic and just accept what happens in life but a guy like Peter Norman could have taken that view, it didn't affect him overly but he did what he believed to be right whatever the cost to him. This is the attitude we need in life, don't accept realism, go for real justice.
Good win for Bolt but it almost seems an anti climax if he doesn't win a medal now doesn't?

Delighted for him. Gibbo - really interesting documentary on the Kenyan runners on rte the other night presented by Eamon Coughlan. Well worth a watch. Its called "Man on a Mission" - refers to their Cork Christian Brother coach who is called the Godfather of Kenyan athletics and is Rudisha's coach. Bit of a character - had only trained greyhounds before going to Kenya! Wears a Munster baseball cap in the documentary!

Cork really produces great coaches - Tom Kiernan, Declan Kidney & Brother Colm O'Connell.

I couldn't agree more. Makes it all the better when we beat ya at stuff (though I do remember being at a Munster final a couple of years ago when Tipp lost to Cork and someone saying .... look at the bright side - we won't have to listen to them whininging about losing for a whole year!

Howya Sin. Just highlighted the odd man out there for ya bud.
As for Father O'Connell... maybe little boys in Missionary Kenya, had to run extra fast, ya know? That's why the Irish boys got caught. Too slow. Controversial, but possibly true.

Roy Keane is an ignorant knacker. Always was and always will be. No class and no real talent. Just a workhorse who played durty, with a bigger mouth than his little, insecure, Cork brain, could ever afford. FACT.
Sonia? Oh yes. Was cheated by the Chinese out of a Gold. Love her. Christy Ring was a Hurling God.
As for the man from Ballyshannon...

My opinion beats Usep Bllaters any day. Those votes are designed to keep the minions happy. Like Shane Williams winning World Player of The Year. That's how much of a joke thôse things really are.
They are a sop.
Keane was not fit to lace Brady's boots. Or McGraths. Or Giles - same kind of durty player, but much smarter. Everyone knows that. Ask yer Da.

My da would have Keane up there with the best Irish footballers and most people who have sense would. Saipan yes is a big black mark on him but besides that in terms of titles and perfromance he was one of the greatest footballers we produced. He was the defensive midfielder before people put them in formations. He won matches for Ireland and United singlehandedly. He raised the performance of those around him. BOD did that and people laud him. Keano doesn't get the same treatemt due to Saipan. I respect the decision he made as the FAI are a joke and always will be, giving themselves better treatement than the players is a farce. Would I have done it? No but I can see why one would.
