Alright folks i know I'm an old fuddy duddy who lives in the past and hates all things new , but i make no excuses for that i miss things from the past .
So here's a thread for anyone who wants to share things they miss or just dont see or cant get anymore .
I miss the penny goodie , do you remember when you could go to the corner shop with 10p and get a bag of sweets ... at mine they did those jelly teddy bears 3 for 1p !! or those hard pink chewing gums that were in a greasepaper wrapper twisted closed at both sides they were 2p

Animated one? I wouldn't have high hopes. Animaniacs was great too, as you can guess I'm a 90s kid.
This one would only be for Cork people, but do you Remember Roche's Stores on Pana?

Re: Do you remember ?
I still remember that we had no indoor toilet and that a man came once a month to pick up our outside toilet tank.
Basically having no TV, we were hardly inside at all. Our mammy used to have to scream for us to come home and we hated being inside. We were always having adventures as we had to use our own imagination to entertain ourselves

No, 2 teams split up on number of people, one guy/girl is on and counts to 100 while everyone hides, he/she sees someone and shouts, tip the can (while touching a lamp post or something) I see.... whichever teams members are all caught first lose. However if a team member reaches the post while the person is on is on the lookout for people and gets to the can, before the person who is on and shouts tip the can I free all. Their team wins.

Manhunt was great, although for some reason I always felt it was important to hid with your team mates which is a stupid idea really.

TT, I remember that song. Earth, Wind & Fire
Billy, same here, we didn't have a telly until I was 13 so a lot of the kids tv from my era passed me by somewhat. I do remember watching the wrestling at my grandparents house on a Saturday (?) afternoon. Big Daddy and Giant Haystacks are the ones I remember.
My favouritest ever thing when I was a kid was my spacehopper! Absolutely loved it!
Tales of the Unexpected was a classic, I loved that.

Re: Do you remember ?
I remember Manhunt, Thom. We played that here in the late 70s across about a quarter of our suburb - including the school, oval surrounding houses and streets. We kept widening the field. We used to include an area of bushland. I'm not kidding... you could be about 10' away from the hunter hiding in this scrubby thicket and they'd walk right by you. They'd have no idea you were there!
I can also remember having this sinking feeling knowing it might be the last time we would ever play before school started again. As it happened we never did play again.
We had the same with mixed sweets. You could get 5 or 4 for 1 cent.
A ten cent paper bag would be stuffed full. The sweets were also better made, tasted better and the smell of the shop when they opened the jar doesn't exist any more. Nowadays, the equivalent sweets are often poorly (cheaply) made with the wrong ingredients (or too much of one) and are about 100 times more expensive!
Can anyone remember SSP Racers? You'd have this plastic zip which you'd pull through the motor. It got red hot sometimes and if you weren't careful you'd get these horrible burns from the molten hot serrated plastic zipper or from the wheel carriage itself. The actual racers would shoot across rooms into a glass door or a piece of furniture at a rapid rate of knots. The cat was scared 5hitless of it.
When there was the yo-yo craze, your fingers would almost get the blood circulation cut off. I had one of those coca-cola (red & white) ones but then upgraded to the cola-coloured/clear one. The string was so much better the finger felt less pain too. Then some kid turns up with the red cherry and clear plastic one.... obviously the latest model!

Wasn't it that the dog food back then wasn't particularly well made and often supplemented with chalk which in turn then produced the white effect as the dogs didn't need that level of calcium.

Re: Do you remember ?
I was reading an article about the history of my local area and was shocked to find the place was used as a dumping ground in the early years of the colony. Hard to believe there were sheep, pigs and cattle farms only a few kms from the Harbour bridge - but all the rubbish was chucked down into the valley of the creek nearby.
Apparently it got so bad that the plague broke out (around 1902) and they eventually stopped doing this and built the now famous Incinerators. There's one near me designed by Walter Burley Griffin - the guy who designed Canberra and it is now an artist's studio / community facility next to the sports complex. The playing fields are on top of all the old fill and are level with these ancient aboriginal caves at Flat Rock - but originally the valley floor was 30m below. Just mind boggling how we can clear and fill up huge areas so quickly and we have no idea of what the natural country originally would have looked like before the First Fleet arrived.
It got me thinking about people lighting fires to burn off rubbish, leaves, etc which used to happen on a wide scale. It stopped when the laws were brought in around the late 70s? That smell which used to linger was quite nice. Eucalyptus and charcoal.
You'd often see an old bloke sweeping leaves into a fire burning off on the side of the street. If a gust of wind arrived then there might be a few hot coals flying around which could spark others fires. That was probably why they stopped everyone doing it and also to clear the air more (which is a lot better than it used to be 30 years ago apparently). So when I smell a fire these days - it immediately takes me back to memories of those days when there were many little fires going on all over the place.

Re: Do you remember ?
In regards to games played in my youth etc...
Kingy
Several kids, a tennis ball and the ability to dodge required.
Started off with everyone standing in a circle and trying to kick the ball through other peoples legs, the last person to not have the ball kicked through their legs was then 'King' and had to throw the ball at everyone else, if you were hit with the ball you were then on until one remained who was the winner.
Wallie
Several kids, a football (or tennis ball), a wall
Everyone has to be able to kick a ball off a wall, if you missed the wall then you had to stand in front of the wall and stop the other kids hitting the wall with the ball but often ended up getting pelted with the ball.
Kerbie
2 kids, a football, a road
Stand either side of a quiet road and throw the football across the road attempting to hit the opposing kerb, bonus points for then catching the rebounding ball if it hits the kerb, even more bonus points if ball is thrown whilst a car is passing as lives are in danger.
Blocky off
A base, several kids, the ability to shout Blocky off really loud.
A mixture of hide and seek and tag. One kid is on and has to count to designated number (usually 100 but no-one ever did) at a base whilst everyone else went off to hide. The catcher then has to find the hiders and make it back to the base to shout the term '1...2...3...Blocky off 'insert kid's name'. The other children though can get to the base and make themselves safe by shouting their own name before the catcher.

Funny how you had Wally and Kerbie and we had Wallsy and Kerbsy.
Either we add s' to game titles in Wales, or you omit them in the North.
And we called Blocky-Off - "Outs"
Never played the tennis ball one

In the flat complex I grew up in we had a game called IRA (I know )
Basically there was 2 teams, one team would think of a word with the same number letters as the members of the team, when the said word is chosen, each team member would get a letter and run and hide
The other team would basically find them and beat the letters out of them, once the word was discovered that team won and then they would be the hunted team
It was a fun game and you could always tell the hard kids from the pansys so you just went for them
Years later when I worked in a Warehouse one of the lads mentioned the game and I said "yeah we played that" then he said "What about IRA r@pe"....the place went silent and he just went bright red and walked off to all of us peeing ourselves

That used to attract kids from miles away when one was found, you didn't need BMB/chat/emails etc back then, word of mouth quickly spread and you'd get kids from the other side of town suddenly turning up in to view rainsoaked covered in mud ripped pages of Razzle.

I remember when there was always one blank/unlabeled VHS tape behind our TV and we all knew what that was. You'd get the opening credits of Emmerdale Farm then BOOM!! the Swedish Olympics.
Taking that tape to school and lending it to all and sundry done your popularity no harm at all.
