2012 Draft Analysis
See Spoiler Below for Draft Analysis:
- Spoiler:
- New England Canaries - First Three Picks: – A. Rodgers (QB), J. Charles (RB), D. Martin (RB).
Little bit of physiological war games from Olly in the draft room. Convincing us that Brady was his pick, only to pluck for Rodgers – correct decision. Jamaal Charles could be fab value at number 28 given his lofty status last year, but it’s all about the ACL. Doug Martin is in for a great year, but depth at RB is totally lacking with Daniel Thomas as the only other pick. Olly instead built through “sleeper” picks, taking wideouts Darius Heyward Bey, Michael Floyd and Kendall Wright to complement Jeremy Maclin. Also drafted 3 TEs, not as crazy as it sounds given the flex rules of the league – Kyle Rudolph or Coby Fleener could be regular features in the flex if their young QBs progress this year. Worst pick is likely to be Doug Baldwin in round 7, unless Cherries gives up a bounty for him!
Beast Mode - First Three Picks: – A. Foster (RB), A. Johnson (WR), W. Welker (WR).
One of two teams inactive at the draft and it shows in a slightly suspect draft class. The top 5 are pretty handy, especially if Rivers cuts down on the interceptions and Andre Johnson can stay healthy – his WRs as a whole are very strong with Dre complemented by Wes Welker and Dwayne Bowe. Classic autopick logic meant taking the Packers Defence and Seb Janikowski way too early. This meant missing out on mid round depth and potential sleepers - Laurent Robinson is destined to fall back after last year’s production, Evan Royster is subject to Shanahanagains , Santana Moss and Nate Burleson aren’t top targets in their retrospective attacks anymore and James Starks has flattered to deceive in Green Bay.
The Stormbringers - First Three Picks: – R. Rice (RB), R. White (WR), H. Nicks (WR).
The second autopick team fared slightly better than the first in my opinion. Running back is slightly weak yet again, though it’s a common feature of 14 team drafts if you don’t go heavy on them early. If Shonn Greene performs for once then it will be looking much better. Matt Ryan at QB could be an absolute steal in round 5, from the sounds of the draft comments he was the target of many, myself included! The wide receiver corps is tidy, with Roddy White and Hakeem Nicks (drafted a fair way after Victor Cruz) complemented by Demaryius Thomas who could breakout under Peyton Manning. Not sure he will really have wanted Randy Moss late on, but Greg Little could be alright as a later round flyer.
Los Angeles Leopards - First Three Picks: – T. Brady (QB), M. Turner (RB), R. Bush (RB).
Mikeygnfl had mentioned his probable pick of Drew Brees, but maybe he was expecting Brady to be gone by then as he selected the Patriots QB fourth overall instead. Michael Turner is possible a risk, everyone thinks his production will drop but I’m sure this was said last year as well. With that in mind running back depth is quite thin with Roy Helu a potential reach in round 8 due to Shanahanigans. A rather crazy drafting of David Akers in round 6 masked some good mid round picks, namely Torrey Smith and Justin Blackmon who could be huge as the only think in a potentially improved passing attack for the Jags. Alshon Jeffrey in round 10 could be a steal and it’s possible that Dwayne Allen supersedes Coby Fleener in the pecking order up in Indy. Mike also took a bit of late gamble on Nick Foles whilst awaiting a Mike Vick injury… if that coincides with Brady’s bye week he will look like a genius.
Thunder and Lightning - First Three Picks: – D. Brees (QB), D. Murray (RB), A. Peterson (RB).
Why take a second QB when you draft Drew Brees – as a result Thunder and Lightning’s roster contains masses of RBs and WRs. If Peterson comes back to be himself quickly then the backfield is devastating – certainly will be strong later in the year when Peterson is 100%, after all it’s the rushing pair that brought the Trams back from the dead last year. There are a couple of serviceable receivers – Wallace will provide spark and Boldin will grind out tough yards in the Ravens offence. Even Nate Washington could be boosted depending on how Locker gets on and if Kenny Britt draws strong coverage. I think Antonio Gates is in for a big year now that he is the undisputed top man in San Diego. Took a flier on Ronnie Hillman… will it work out?
San Francisco Trams - First Three Picks: – L.McCoy (RB), G. Jennings (WR), F. Jackson (RB).
Pretty happy with my own draft - McCoy dropping to number 6 was a godsend as I was otherwise going to take a punt on CJ2K just to avoid taking a QB in round 1. Fred Jackson is the number two, but you worry about a drop in production with Issac Redman as the number 3 potentially loosing work later in the season as Mendenhall comes back to Pittsburgh. Jennings and Bryant are at WR, with Robert Meachem taken as a third. Jermichael Finley was a bit of a homer pick, but I have a habit of missing TEs in the mid rounds and ending up with Brandon Pettigrew as a starter – here I got him as a backup and potential matchup flex player. I gambled on the selections of the autopick teams ahead of me and missed out on Matt Ryan and Phillip Rivers effectively by one pick, but got Cutler and Locker later. Ronnie Brown in round 13 could be a bargain for a couple of weeks whilst Ryan Matthews recovers.
Prestige Worldwide - First Three Picks: – C. Johnson (RB), B. Marshall (WR), P. Harvin (WR).
I quite like this team. Chris Johnson will be much better this year with the full offseason and BeJarvus Green-Ellis is a good compliment as the clear lead back in Cincinnati. Jacquizz Rodgers could be a breakout candidate this year and getting Mendenhall from under my nose in round 12 could prove to be a steal later in the year when he’s fully fit. Peyton Manning is risk reward, could smash it for 4th round value, but who knows really. Percy Harvin is getting a lot of hype and sits well as a compliment to Brandon Marshall. Titus Young could truly emerge as a force this year, especially if the Madden Curse hits Megatron.
Highbury Tankers - First Three Picks: – D. McFadden (RB), L. Fitzgerald (WR), S. Smith (WR).
SuperTankers debut in the league started under the autopick system, but he got back in control later on. Darren McFadden is worthy of the pick if he stays healthy, but RB depth after him could be considered weak as he couldn’t get Taiwan Jones as a handcuff, Toby Gerhart will likely loose carries as the season progresses, Beanie Wells is a guy many see losing his job to Ryan Williams and Isaiah Pead is no more than a deep sleeper. The team does do well at WR, with Larry Fitzgerald capable of putting up plenty no matter who throws him the balls. Steve Smith is still the only real guy in Carolina and I rate Eric Decker as a better prospect this year than Demaryius Thomas, plus Jon Baldwin and Danny Amendola are guys I like. The Tankers took Mike Vick as there QB, protecting the investment with Russel Wilson who could do anything this year.
Tony Romo and Juliet - First Three Picks: – C. Johnson (WR), M. Jones-Drew (RB), T. Richardson (RB).
It’s tough to argue that someone is weak at wide receiver when they draft Megatron in round one, but Leeds Cowboys possess only three on his roster and one of them is the largely unknown Rueben Randle who is unlikely to set the world on fire. The team is strongest at running back with the second round selection of Maurice Jones-Drew becoming much more sensible given the end of his holdout occurred right before draft time. Trent Richardson is a potentially injury risk, but when he hits the field he will be focal point of the Browns offence and is worth the third round pick. Sleeper running backs include Michael Bush who should see a decent amount of work in Chicago and Cedric Benson who could have a surprising year as nobody will be go run stuff heavy on the Packers. I personally think Rob Gronkowski may slip considerably this year and so Aaron Hernandez is a great pick, certainly the better value TE when the rounds are considered. His QB is RG3 whose rushing ability could rack up the points.
Knights of Cydonia - First Three Picks: – M. Forte (RB), V. Cruz (WR), D. Sproles (RB).
MockingJay33 debuts in the league and went for the homer picks in Victor Cruz, drafted well before Hakeem Nicks, and even his former 606v2 alias Mario Mannigham now of the 49ers. His roster is well balanced with the trio of Matt Forte, Darren Sproles and Willis McGahee likely filling the roster week in week out. I think DeSean Jackson is a risk, but round 5 is hardly overdrafting – In fact my favourite pick here is Malcolm Floyd in round 7 who I think will benefit hugely from the unfortunate injury to Vincent Brown. Jared Cook is another player I was targeting as I think he will gel well with new QB Jake Locker. I always found Devery Henderson a complete fantasy nightmare as it’s always all or nothing but now that Robert Meachem has left the Saints he should get greater consistency and in round 13 you can hardly complain. Big Ben is the QB and he always produces a chunk of points, plus the Steeler run game is practically a hospital nowadays.
Child Please - First Three Picks: – C. Newton (QB), J. Graham (TE), S. Jackson (RB).
The last two number one picks in the real draft occupy the QB spots for GB1919. Cam Newton won’t likely produce as last year but still warrants the high billing – however I still would have gone with Matt Stafford. Jimmy Graham is basically a wideout, but I still begrudge drafting a tight end so high without having got a RB in round 1. The rest of the roster contains a lot of sleepers, some of whom like Antonio Brown are already established but seem set to kick on this season. Peyton Hillis is great value due to Jamaal Charles injury in Kansas and Donald Brown is the obvious back in Indy who will have to run to try and ease the learning curve for Andrew Luck. His late round receivers are full of potential with Randall Cobb, Leonard Hankerson and Brian Quick all emerging options in their respective passing attacks. Each however does remain an unknown quantity and there will be plenty of temptation to drop them in the early weeks to make room for the inevitable undrafted player who excels early.
Suck My Vick No Romo - First Three Picks: – M. Stafford (QB), J. Jones (WR), J. Nelson (WR).
If he was running a real football team GSC would sure know how to lose the lockeroom – he promptly placed half the team on the trade block within minutes of the draft finishing. Having got Matt Stafford (great value) 12th overall he got the fantasy worlds new darling in Julio Jones who will likely produce a tonne of points. Otherwise the wide receivers remain strong, with Jordy Nelson and Miles Austin the theoretical number two’s in prolific pass attacks and Stevie Johnson the only major weapon for the Bills air game. He waited late to get the first running back, Frank Gore, with the 45th pick and that could be a problem later in the year due to his other draft picks at the position. Ryan Williams should grow into the starting role in Arizona but the other two backs, Montario Hardesty and Rashard Jennings will start off strong but likely fade as there offences featured backs return from injury and holdout respectively. GSC also stood by a “no kicker” policy, so somebody will become the odd man out in a matter of days.
BamBams Warriors - First Three Picks: – M. Lynch (RB), R. Matthews (RB), Brandon Lloyd (WR).
I have to say I feel there was a little bit of overdrafting by BamBam in the early phases. Indeed Marshawn Lynch went much later in the Keeper draft and in my view isn’t worth a first round pick. However with the snake draft I can see the logic in getting two theoretical feature backs early because you’re not going to get another pick for so long. For that reason I get the drafting of Ryan Matthews who I believe got be a total star if he could just stay healthy. He’s handcuffed Lynch with Robert Turbin which is sensible, plus Mikel Leshoure is a great pick as I see him taking the starting job off Kevin Smith in Detroit once his suspension is done. Eli Manning will put up solid points and won’t need a backup except during the bye. In terms of receivers I think Brandon Lloyd will do well as he is reunited with Josh McDaniels, Pierre Garcon is the current top guy in Washington and Davon Bess is literally the only person Miami has to throw at. Jermaine Gresham could be a fantastic tight end, one who I was targeting, but he often flatters to deceive.
Dyslexia United - First Three Picks: – R. Gronkowski (TE), AJ Green (WR), T. Romo (QB).
Final pick in round 1 for Pr4wn and it’s always tough waiting so long between pairs of picks. Getting a tight end in round one throws a draft, but Gronkowski will still produce like a receiver even with a drop off from last year. AJ Green is a fab pick as well, plus I’m a massive fan of Tony Romo from a fantasy perspective. Ahmad Bradshaw is a feature back for now, but I imagine there will be selection dilemmas each week between Ben Tate who is a talent number two and Jonathon Stewart whose carries yoyo each week. His receivers I like, particularly Kenny Britt who has a one game suspension but will be the number one target if he can stay on the field. Emmanuel Sanders and Jacoby Ford are both deep sleepers who have the downfield threat to deliver long touchdowns but could otherwise deliver small scores. His draft was perhaps tainted by an accidentally drafting of the Bears DST early on - I wouldn’t say it ruined the draft, but who knows how events would have changed without it.

good analysis again crazy_dave!
I felt I had to take 2 running backs with my top 2 picks, the only others I considered were MJD and Demarco Murray, both of who I felt had more risk than Lynch. My ideal pick would have been Forte, but he went a couple of picks earlier!

Great write up as usual crazy_dave.
I've just had a look at the depth charts and Thunder and Lightning are my early favourites (other than me of course) with a strong base of Brees, Murray and Peterson.
Tony Romo and Juliet could have a decent chance at the championship if RG3 and Richardson do well in their rookie season and backup Calvin Johnson and Hernandez.

Looking at the depth charts
Its Thunder & L followed by Child Please & Tony Romo who look to have had the best overall drafts IMO
Doesn't look like anyone had a disaster though

I hope so! I'm fairly happy with my draft, but a lot rests on the rather fragile shoulders of Mathews and Lynch. If both of those guys play up to potential, then I think I have a decent shot at the playoffs

Great write-ups crazy_dave, it's always good to see a fairly independent analysis of the draft and comparing it to what I think of my team.

Re: 606V2 West 2012 – NFL.com Fantasy Football Homepage
Just had a look at the league history on the site (very good/ as is the new My Fantasy Scoreboard feature) and I beat the Trams 108.18 to 78.26 on the opening week last year. I'm pretty sure I was 'projected' to lose that one too so I am hoping to get off to a winning start again.
Also noticed that no team scored over 100 points against me in the regular season lasy year which definitely helped go 12-1. I think I got into a lucky streak were others got injuries at the 'right' time. Not sure that'll happen this year though.

I have dropped Doug Baldwin, and tried to add Kevin Ogletree but it says it is pending. What does this mean?

I'd imagine it's because games have already started and Ogletree has played. You'll have to wait now and see if you get him through waivers which won't happen until Tuesday.

Olly , once a player has played that week he is not available on waivers until date shown usually following WedsOlly wrote:I have dropped Doug Baldwin, and tried to add Kevin Ogletree but it says it is pending. What does this mean?
This means it will go down to waiver order ,so you might not get him
Also don't just drop players .put in a waiver claim for the player you want it will then ask you to state which player you wish to drop ,that way if you don't get the player you want [Ogletree] you would still have Baldwin

I don't want Baldwin anyways, stupid pick so just get rid of him, and pick up someone from waivers.

Only got 3 players playing in the early game compared to GSC's 6.
And I have 5 yet to play to his 2 so hopefully I wont go too far behind and can bring it back

So I need Torrey Smith to outscore Ronnie Brown by 11 points tomorrow night. (It would have been 3 had I not dropped the Seahawks for the Bills). Could have been even less if I had played Alshon Jeffery instead on Justin Blackmon ( a close call/ but I couldn't sign in nfl.com even if I want to make the change).

I need Floyd to outscore Ray Rice by 14 points whilst I have C.J. Spiller on the bench who outscored McGahee by 17 points!!!! FML.
Re: 606V2 West 2012 – NFL.com Fantasy Football Homepage
In my other four leagues I've got three deficits to overturn.
NFC East league - losing 79.36 - 75.30. I've got Torrey Smith, he's got Boldin.
Battle of Brits - losing 68.96 - 48.42. I've got Mathews out, Floyd and Dickson, he's got no one.
Twitter league - winning 82.76 - 42.50. I've got Floyd and Smith, he's got Leonard and Lee.
Twitter friends - losing 94.84 - 80.10. I've got Torrey Smith, he's got no one.
I can see a pattern. I've got Floyd, Smith and Roethlisberger in three different teams.

The score between me and GSC is currently...
Me - 86.92 with one player remaining
GSC - 90.00 with no players remaining
The game hinges on Darrius Heyward Bay. If he doesn't get me the 3.09 points I need, I will hunt him down, and take him out

Guys, I am not trading C.J. Spiller so stop proposing trades as I will reject them all.
Re: 606V2 West 2012 – NFL.com Fantasy Football Homepage
Justed looked at the league and it was even worse than I thought. I swapped the Bills for the Bucs not the Seahawks. That was 13 points it cost me not the 8 points I thought.mikeygnfl wrote:I made a late defensive change and dropped the Seahawks for the Bills

Well you have Torrey Smith to overturn an 11 point deficit and Ronnie Brown as the starting Chargers RB.
Hopefully I should still scrape it as I expect the Ravens Bengals to be quite tight and defensive... then again that's prime time for a long bomb to Smith!
Think i'm a bit buggered with Fred Jackson out for a while... should have handcuffed with CJ Spiller. He was there at some point in the draft and I think I took Pettigrew as a backup TE or flex.
Liking how Cutler went, though having seen RG3 go the pick earlier and celebrating that fact could have been premature!

I thought I was in for a good night after that play but that was pretty much all he got. I probably would have only needed one TD from him as well. Anyway I'm hoping to bounce back in week 2 and am predicted wins in both the West and keepers leagues.crazy_dave23 wrote:I was (whilst watching the repeat on BBC Red Button) mega concerned after one play!
