First topic message reminder :
The equation is simple. If England win, they remain number 1. If South Africa avoid defeat, they move up to number 1 and will officially be the best Test team in the World.

South Africa: 1 Graeme Smith (capt), 2 Alviro Petersen, 3 Hashim Amla, 4 Jacques Kallis, 5 AB de Villiers (wk), 6 Jacques Rudolph, 7 JP Duminy, 8 Vernon Philander, 9 Dale Steyn, 10 Morne Morkel, 11 Imran Tahir

Who is this Steyn lad anyway? Getting smashed around the place by a spin bowler.

Short to Swann , no surprise , but if they give him room he will take it on ...two fours
Now what will Steyn come back with ?

well Broad yet again not delivering the runs with the bat the expectation of whihc gets him a place as a specialist bowler in the side.

I don't know, I thought both balls were there to be hit to be honest, but Bairstow was a bit in two minds, because it's not one of his main areas.

Good review Swanny
Wanted him to review that ...but I had thought it might have hit him outside the line so just as well I'm not the umpire
Not out anyway.

That was a bit of tail-end umpiring from Dharhamaseena to be honest. He hasn't had the best of games, 3rd decision now overturned.

Perhaps they were , Mike ...but as you say it isn't his favourite shot , and risk is attached ...
And he's gone
I do credit good bowling ...really kept him waiting for the ball he wanted , then the full one fast and straight...no magic , just good smart bowling.
Top knock , sad he didn't get the ton.

Bairstow gone for 95. Top innings, he just got nervous towards the 3 figure mark. Because of him, we're still in this Test.

Oh no! Playing around it again. Great bowling from SA, keep it tight, keep it tight, then give him the straighter one.
England in trouble, they're going to have to bowl (and then bat) really well now.

Unfortunate for Bairstow, he'll have to hold on for some more time for that first test hundred. But very well bowled from the South Africans, just never went down on the intensity and the pressure, and then a good ball from Morkel done him in.

If we limit SA to below 300 in the 2nd innings, we can still win. Anything over and it's probably a lost cause.

Re: England v South Africa, Lords, 3rd Test Thread
Has indeed been excellent bowling from SA this morning - not surprising though ,they are a fine bowling team and I expected nothing less.
They aren't going to have a big lead though , and as I don't expect this pitch to deteriorate the game is still wide open. What will be important is for England to bowl equally well when they take the field again ...early wickets could swing the match back their way quite quickly.

Me for one. It shows a complete lack of temparament to score 95 easy runs with the bowlers tired and then completely go to pieces for the sake of some personal milestone when your team needs you the most.
Or something. Let me add one of those face thingies in case anyone thinks I'm being serious.
In all seriousness, talk of selection for the next test is fairly meaningless given we're only just getting to the half-way mark in this one. Strauss and Taylor could score match-winning hundreds for example.

Re: England v South Africa, Lords, 3rd Test Thread
I got hit on the elbow in Germany - it really is agony, feel for Jimmy, mine took a night's rest before I was able to do much.
Left arm crucial in bowling, you don't want to be bowling with a left-arm which is painful if you bend it. Hopefully some ice and a few painkillers and all will be ok by then. Certainly the physio will be working on it through the break I would imagine.
Good morning for South Africa. England need to fight back, first by eeking out every run possible, and then bowling their socks off. There's still some bounce and pace there, so Finn, Broad and Anderson can do something if they get their radar right.

Re: England v South Africa, Lords, 3rd Test Thread
Whatever else one can say of Jimmy Anderson's batting , he certainly has guts.
Loved the way he took that single off the last ball...trust the arm will mend over lunchtime.
SA morning ,well bowled. (26 overs 69/3 wasn't what England wanted...but there was always a chance they'd be completely blown away by the new ball so this is not a disaster. If they had been able to get to lunch only losing one wicket then a decent lead may well have come about , but that was always going to be a tough task against this SA outfit.
This match continues to enthrall.

I could look it up, but this might be quicker. Do Germany have an Associates team or is it just ex-pats or armed forces that play.

that piece on forign players is abit contreversial. These are players that have come here on there own accord and tried there hardest to get in the england team. What are we supposed to do- say nah sorry even though you can qualify and your good enough we are not gonna pick you!! Its just sour grapes from the rest of the world thats all! And the fact is ever other country does the same, its just they dont get as many top players that want to play for them!
