England v South Africa at Southampton, 2nd ODI
First topic message reminder :
With the wash out at Cardiff, this fixture has no less the importance of that as regards to whoever wins either keeps/gains the number one International ODI team position in the world. Both will give it everything they have.
Likely teams i would think pretty much as the first ODI, ie:
England.
AN Cook, IR Bell, IJL Trott, RS Bopara, EJG Morgan, C Kieswetter†, TT Bresnan, CR Woakes, GP Swann, JM Anderson, ST Finn.
South Africa.
GC Smith, HM Amla, D Elgar, AB de Villiers*†, JP Duminy, F du Plessis, R McLaren, WD Parnell, RJ Peterson, M Morkel, LL Tsotsobe

ach, inside edge just past leg stump for four, a wild swoosh from Amla, England with no luck at all so far.

This track may be a spinners track but there looks like plenty of runs here as well

looks a great pitch to bat on, Finn loses his length there, suddenly SA are up and away.

ach, another edge, this time through the just vacated second slip, brings another four. Everything going SA's way so far

No second slip for Bresnan and it proves costly

Runs flowing now, wickets needed. Give Swanny a go.

and another one straight through the slips, 32 off the last 3 overs, England losing control...

14 runs of Bresnans first over but really could have had a wicket.

better from Finn, PP ends with SA 49-0 but England desperately unlucky not to have had at least a couple of wickets you feel.

england's powerplay IMO..
may not have got a wicket, however only conceded 49 from 10 overs...decent effort.

Kieswetter very unhappy with Samit Patel, shouts "wake up man!" at him

--once again Eng has picked bits and pieces players instead of specialists.
--Jade D. should have played ahead of military medium Bresnan.....smacks of defensive containing mindset....instead oif trying to pick wickets.
--And Patel ?
you must be kidding me if he is playing as a bowler ?
you must be kidding me if he is playing as a batsman ?
you must be kidding me if he is playing as a allrounder ?
Limited over cricket is also about specialists....and Bairstow should have been played instead of Patel

The 8th and 9th over aside (26 runs coming from those two overs) England has been bowled very well so far.

I agree about Patel, but I think Woakes should have played instead of him. I've never rated Patel personally. On the other hand I do trust Cook's judgement since we've won 13 consecutive ODIs this year.

not a lot of turn there (in fact none at all), have the captains misread this?
here's Patel.

Re: England v South Africa at Southampton, 2nd ODI
Military medium Bresnan as opposed to the express pace of Dernbach
Woakes for Bresnan would make a sensible argument
If Bairstow had played instead of Patel England would have 10 overs from Bopara and Trott and no second "spin" ( i do use that term losely for Partel) bowling option, its ridiculous.
As much as I dont rate him the report on the pitch was that there should be turn. Its also vital to have some variation in the bowling, a left arm slow is that.

Swann's line needs to be much further to the off-side to Smith.

Patel bowling a good line to Smith, and other than an airy reverse sweep which just carries over short third man he can't get him away.

Re: England v South Africa at Southampton, 2nd ODI
surprisingly Swann not getting any turn out there, whereas Patel has found a bit. Cook really needs to get a square leg in for Amla (take out short fine leg if necessary)

Smith and Amla may not be getting these two away but they are going along reasonably comfortably. Patel has actually suprised me with some of the turn he has got.

Smith really is an unspectacular but very solid ODI batsman. I must admit to enjoying watching him bat.

Solid start for SA, question is can they continue for antoehr 10 overs like this, leaving plenty of wickets for the mad rush.

Re: England v South Africa at Southampton, 2nd ODI
Disappointed that England are persisting with Samit Patel and have ditched Woakes. Woakes turns it more than Samit...not to mention the fact that he really does live up to his 'Fatel' nickname in the field.
England under the pump here.

Bresnan strikes! Smith skies one and Kieswetter makes decent ground running back towards the boundary to take it comfortably

South Africa aren't quite able to get on with it, doesn't look like an easy track to score quick runs. Patel has turned a few, and Anderson and Finn bowled well up front.

Smith gone, big wicket that. Hopefully we can pick up a couple between 20-30 and halt their progress. Limit them to below 250 hopefully.

It might be a blessing in disguise for SA, Smith was hogging all the batting and not accelerating his innings.
