Pretty much seconded, although if Doyle can play blindside (didn't he play both sides in Oz?), I'd have Birch on the bench. Farrell being able to play 12 and 13 makes him a good bench option, actually.

I don't think Mark Anscombe was very happy with Ali Birch's yellow card last weekend!
I pretty much totally agree on the team. I'd maybe just have Nelson on the bench for versatility.

Fair enough, had forgotten about that.
I'd stick with Farrell - Payne covers the wings and Gilroy covers fullback.

Don, Birch isn't in the squad. Notch, Anscombe wasn't particularly happy but Birch did take a serious knock. He looked distinctly groggy coming off the pitch.
Would you have Nelson instead of Farrell or lose one of the forward replacements?

Re: Ulster v Glasgow (Friday 19.05) Discussion Thread
So Court is available - good stuff.
I think Birch took himself out of the running last Friday - my money is on Doyle starting.
Agree re Nelson I think he will make the bench.
We might use this game to rest Fitzpatrick - I understand he is required to not play in 2 Pro-12 games before November. Would mean Macklin on the bench.
That makes it :
1. Black
2. Herring
3. Afoa
4. Muller
5. Stevenson
6. Diack
8. Williams
7. Doyle
9. Heaney
10. Jackson

16. Brady
17. Court
18. Macklin
19. McComb
20. McComish
21. P Marshall
22. O'Connor
23. Nelson

Instead of Farrell. Hard on Farrell but Nelson and Payne have both played 13 recently and Nelson has played on the wing and at fullback in pre-season too.
Just covering 12 would be the issue. But Jackson could slot in at a push.

Re: Ulster v Glasgow (Friday 19.05) Discussion Thread
Good to see that so many new faces - and young players getting a shout. I have watched with interest as the Scottish and Welsh teams evolved during the past couple of seasons - I barely recognise them now - while Ulster seemed to be a bit more conservative.
Obviously the Welsh national team is the best advert for giving youth a chance - but the All Blacks do it too.
Perhaps that is why Geoff mentioned a real buzz in and around the squad.
It would have been a bit of a kick in the teeth if that had only been for pre-season.
Can't wait for it all to kick off - hopefully will be able to find some way of watching the new season!

Suppose I would have a better chance of getting the team right if I read the names in the squad.
Forgot that Jackson could slot in at 12, actually. But I'd stick with Farrell. More chance of Cave being painfully rusty than Payne having a stinker, and having to be subbed for non-injury reasons.

I'd hate to be from Dundalk, shoite football team useless intercounty side. Still least you only have 5 toes unlike those Drogheda lads.
2bfair, welcome to the boards. I can send on links into your PM inbox that might help you out for Ulster games. The HC ones will be definitely covered, Rabo ones will probably be covered in it alright.

Yet another BBC article suggesting its a tough call between O'Connor and Jackson. Is it really? Are they just being silly, or do they have reason to believe Anscombe doesn't see much between them?

I'd hate it too. Worse there are only 3 decent looking women in Dundalk. A factor which carries across the border to Newry also.Thomond wrote:I'd hate to be from Dundalk, shoite football team useless intercounty side. Still least you only have 5 toes unlike those Drogheda lads.
The 6 toes thing is from Sellafield and extends to Dundalk as well.

Managed to get my night shift in work changed to the morning so I will be making a trip to Ravers this Friday. Looking forward to it been reading good reports about the young guys from the pre season games so looking forward to seeing how they perform in the flesh. Also really liking the noises Anscombe is making, promising times ahead.

Do you not live in Dundalk Jen? Their soccer side got a jersey to look like a banana being sponsored by Fyffes, a bit cringey and they are also bankrupt unfortunately!

Nelson seems a much better cover and would result in minimum disruption. Farrell on the other hand requires significant changes.

Would like to see Gilroy play full back, think he could do well there, Nelson could do with the expereince I suppose and would add to the stable of talent that the Ulster backline have. 2 ginger ninjas in the backline with Jackson and Nelson!

I'm not saying that there should be, like, a special pen in the stands for "people like Notch" or anything, but surely by allowing more than one on the pitch at a time, we are basically saying that being ginger is okay?
Now I'm not gingerist, but we have to have standards. I've no problem with them being ginger in the privacy of their own home. But all this shameless flaunting of it - rubbing it in our faces. Wear a hat, people.

Not bigger or better than the Ulster team Donegal at the weekend there.
To be fair I've always said, if I wasn't from the Glens of Antrim, I'd want to be from Cork. (Cork, 2nd only to the Glens of Antrim [the tourist board can use that if you want to really promote Cork])

Pathetic tactics and decision making from management means the team are underperforming, a couple of lads playing poor, I think that chestnut is well known on these boards!

Eminently sensible. Others admire their academy; personally I've always applauded Leinster's no-nonsense attitude to the encroaching tide of gingerness.
