The official ryder cup thread.....
First topic message reminder :
or at least what it should look like if we ignore the over hyped nature of the event;
The Ryder cup will be contested over Medinah country clubs number 3 course where Tiger Woods has won two of his four PGA championships. This is a rather odd choice of venue for a nation so patriotic like America, as the clubhouse is styled on the headquarters of the terrorists. And we know how much the terrorists hate America, and vice versa? The fans won’t know whether to watch the golf or build bunkers in their back gardens. The invasion has started!
We can only hope however, that the importance of golf’s second biggest team exhibition match – the most important being the Tavistock – is not overshadowed by such politics. Although, politics are set to overshadow the performance of one British player competing this week. The finest golfer in all of the Queens land is set to declare his nationality as Greek, in the hope he will not have to compete in this Mickey Mouse event next time around.
The captains have only very inconsequential decisions to make during the week yet one of them has already arsed it up. Ollie has decided that wearing orange was the only way to stop young Rory defecting. The reasoning of course being that Rory will be supporting the Florida gators after he switches to the US full time.
The only other influence the captains have on the outcome of the match is in their decision of golf buggy driving style. The manner in which they and their VC’s maneuver the buggy around the course can set the tone for the way the team plays. At least I assume that’s what they are doing, as there is no other logical reason for driving around like a headless chicken trying to use a walkie talkie.
What the vice captains do when not trying to drive like a peacock would dance with its plumage is all a little vague. I wonder if they provide protection from the Ryder cup troll, aka monty. Any player suffering the misfortune of hearing this beast, which is so excitable around Ryder cup season, may never make sense of anything ever again.
I guess we cant forget that somehow this buffoon managed to win the thing, proving the ceremonial nature of the captains position. But who will win this time?
The yanks are likely to be spooked playing in the shadows of a minaret but the Europeans will have to cope with the only thing more vacuous than westwood, monty’s and Donald’s major trophy cabinets combined……. Paul McGinley. Have you ever heard the fool witter on during the sky coverage?
The deciding factor will of course be, something that would require more wasted thought on this over bloated charity for majorless European golfers.
There we have it, they level of seriousness with which you should view this event unless you are a man boobed fake Scottish bloke with a huge whole in your CV.

These courses are far too long for Donald, especially when he plays against someone who can outdrive him by so far. Oh wait...what?

Don't rate Poulter much, but I have to say he was great to watch yesterday and I found myself applauding along with the rest.
Hardly a positive statement on team unity from McIlroy today though. It does not look good for Europe at all.

See my posts on the previous page. Colin Montgomery commented on NBC that it was a definite lapse in team organization.

Re: The official ryder cup thread.....
Oh, OK. I knew McIlroy was late and whoever was responsible for his schedule needs a word in his/her ear - but I just didn't make the connection between that and a "statement on team unity from McIlroy today".
Probably that's because there isn't one, not sure where GT350 is coming from there.

I think he is just making the point that any other player would be raring to go and practise and chat to the team at the course at least an hour before the first player tees off

Re: The official ryder cup thread.....
I think they pretty much go through their own routines when they get to the course, Mystir. Someone's dropped a bollick and they need to know it, but how that becomes a reflection on McIlroys commitment to team unity is a big stretch.
As far as I'm concerned, the only thing McIlroy has to do today for the team is win a point, that could be considered a statement, particularly after having to miss out on his prep.

You would expect someone to be at the course maybe 2-3 hours before so it's odd, but in the grand scheme of things who cares especially if he gets his point.

Re: The official ryder cup thread.....
In his particular case I don't think missing out on his prep. as you put it is such a big deal, and as World No.1 he should go on to make his 1 point contribution to the team effort, but if I was one of the other team players I certainly would not be impressed that one of our number was less than 15 minutes away from handing what could turn out to be a critical point to the opposition. It wasn't just down to McIlroy, these guys have an entourage of assistants to ensure that this sort of thing doesn't happen. That's where the team thing comes into it.

Re: The official ryder cup thread.....
Questions need to be asked, without a doubt. But as has been pointed out, at this level it's never going to come down to McIlroy to organise himself, it's somebody else's fault and they wont be swinging a club today.
McIlroy is playing, and is doing rather well, as are the rest of the boys, this could get levelled up at 10-10 before the USA put a point on the board.
Massively game on now, Laurie's in to make it 10-8 and Poulter and McIlroy only need to half the next holes to square it up.
C'mon Europe!

Re: The official ryder cup thread.....
Ermm. This is a team thing. If your not debating and chatting to your team mates pre match.. and it's down to an entourage to work out your tee time then I am struggling to work out the team unity..
However no judgements here.. bring the point home.. no dramas, Mcilroy is an amazing player but possibly not suited to the whole bonding team thing.. that doesn't matter if you contribute of course. But what Europe doesn't need is a woods on the team..

McIlroy in for his one - can't do more than that. If there's a team failing, it's in the backroom.

Re: The official ryder cup thread.....
I'm not so sure GSC, the pressure is massive here for the USA to deliver, and they're not holding up too well.
Europe have nothing to lose, I'll still be massively proud of them if they go down by a point.
Advantage Garcia at 18 to tie it up.
Woods is not looking comfortable against Molinari either.

I have, officially, shat my pants.
Go out tomorrow people, hunt them down and hug them.
Let's all hug a German , let's all hug a German
Thanks for that USA, it was a most memorable Ryder Cup, not for you perhaps, but who cares?
Quiet in Chicago tonight. Sleep well.
