The official ryder cup thread.....
First topic message reminder :
or at least what it should look like if we ignore the over hyped nature of the event;
The Ryder cup will be contested over Medinah country clubs number 3 course where Tiger Woods has won two of his four PGA championships. This is a rather odd choice of venue for a nation so patriotic like America, as the clubhouse is styled on the headquarters of the terrorists. And we know how much the terrorists hate America, and vice versa? The fans won’t know whether to watch the golf or build bunkers in their back gardens. The invasion has started!
We can only hope however, that the importance of golf’s second biggest team exhibition match – the most important being the Tavistock – is not overshadowed by such politics. Although, politics are set to overshadow the performance of one British player competing this week. The finest golfer in all of the Queens land is set to declare his nationality as Greek, in the hope he will not have to compete in this Mickey Mouse event next time around.
The captains have only very inconsequential decisions to make during the week yet one of them has already arsed it up. Ollie has decided that wearing orange was the only way to stop young Rory defecting. The reasoning of course being that Rory will be supporting the Florida gators after he switches to the US full time.
The only other influence the captains have on the outcome of the match is in their decision of golf buggy driving style. The manner in which they and their VC’s maneuver the buggy around the course can set the tone for the way the team plays. At least I assume that’s what they are doing, as there is no other logical reason for driving around like a headless chicken trying to use a walkie talkie.
What the vice captains do when not trying to drive like a peacock would dance with its plumage is all a little vague. I wonder if they provide protection from the Ryder cup troll, aka monty. Any player suffering the misfortune of hearing this beast, which is so excitable around Ryder cup season, may never make sense of anything ever again.
I guess we cant forget that somehow this buffoon managed to win the thing, proving the ceremonial nature of the captains position. But who will win this time?
The yanks are likely to be spooked playing in the shadows of a minaret but the Europeans will have to cope with the only thing more vacuous than westwood, monty’s and Donald’s major trophy cabinets combined……. Paul McGinley. Have you ever heard the fool witter on during the sky coverage?
The deciding factor will of course be, something that would require more wasted thought on this over bloated charity for majorless European golfers.
There we have it, they level of seriousness with which you should view this event unless you are a man boobed fake Scottish bloke with a huge whole in your CV.

No need to be quite so aggressive about it, obviously Europe played phenomenally well. If it ever becomes against the law of this site to discuss and debate then I won't.

Re: The official ryder cup thread.....
tactics. yeah both captains were kinda rubbish, bar ollies final pairings he front loaded, which was the only way to do it. You have to win early- because that sends the seeds of doubt down the line.. That i suppose is the problem with your theory GSC.. Its all about momentum. Anyone can beat anyone if truth be told.. but it really is all about confidence and momentum

Yeah, like I'm sooooo agressive.
Europe snatched that victory from the jaws of defeat, largely because they played some fantastic golf today...
But you blame DLIII?
Honestly?
You have your view, I'll have mine; Davis Love had nothing to do with it though.
Credit where credit is due; awesome golf Europe, awesome golf.
That's all.

Re: The official ryder cup thread.....
The only thing that you can possibly claim that DLIII went wrong was I think he came with a plan that he was going to rest all his players at least once and so for the Saturday afternoon matches, that meant leaving Bradley/Mickelson out (who were 3/3) and put in Stricker/Woods (who ended up 0/3). Bradley/Mickelson may not have won, but it felt like taking one part out that was working and replacing it with a piece that wasn't.

He should never ever have rested them two. thats the fact of it. However JMO was just as bad with some of his exclusion-inclusions. but at the same time we gotta say that 10-6 isnt a mistake- so Love and his team have done more right that good!!
Poulter made JMO a hero if truth be told- He was the main motivation..

This could be huge for European golf, and could seriously undermine some of the younger americans' confidence. Bradley looks even more like he's about to kill someone than he usually does!

I hope you all agree that there is no other event in golf quite like the Ryder Cup. It towers over all the other events (including the majors). And to think the players don't get paid (directly), makes it even more amazing. I can't wait for the next one.

Re: The official ryder cup thread.....
Any ideas why Tiger conceded Molinari's putt on the last?
The putt could have been missed - Tiger missed his putt - so Europe won the contest as opposed to the tie which looked likely. I know Europe get the trophy regardless, but I think it was a nice gesture from Tiger. I expected him to get some flak for it though, on the basis the Americans would always regard a tie as better than being beaten.

2 things:
1) Europe made the greatest of great escapes. They were fabulous on the final day.
2) The Yanks have the worst sports fans on the whole planet. Which makes it even better that Europe won.

When predictions come home to roost....
I thought it was very funny to hear Butch Harmon back tracking and apologising for saying Europe were going to get hammered in the singles - who would have thought he needed the job with Sky so much.
And speaking of humble pie.. someone here told me, and I quote "we're going to give the Europeans a hell of shellacking" (whatever that is).. only wish I could remember who it was.. this serving of humble pie is going cold and it's only going to get harder to eat.

Totally agree on 2). They were talking about how they managed to "ejected" some fans who stepped over the line as if it was some kind of achievement or something to be proud off! Shouldn't even be part of the conversation.
Was very satisfying to hear the U-S-A, U-S-A slowly diminish as the singles progressed.
Yooooo..sssss..A? - Yooooo got beat.

Worst closing ceremony I've ever seen. I though the opening cermony was pretty embarrasssing, but this toppled it. But I did have some enjoyment watching the US faces. Yes, I feel sorry for some of them (Stricker and Furyk in particular must feel bad - they seem nice guys) - but Bradleys face was worth all the money... Who said Ted Bundy?

Can't wait to see Trussmans response. 'Europe can't win' he said. Won't see him for another two years.
Touch of class from Mickelson though. What a guy. Great to see woods' already skelpt ar$e of a miserable face go ashen and hit the ground. Priceless.

Mickleson was classy indeed, as was Westwood I thought in dealing with Kuchar making him tap in from a foot.
Bradley began to annoy me with being just too hyped and cocky looking at the start of his singles match, and was glad Rory beat him.
Cool Hand Luke really lived up to his name, but I was impressed with how Bubba dealt with defeat.
Have to say, going into this, I had my doubts Poulter could really be the inspiration (I thought Celtic Manor might be a flash in the pan) but he really delivered. Had my doubts about him again going into the singles because he looked and must have been so drained, but fair dues - an incredible performance

Three Ryder Cups poulter has been a massive influence amd top points scorer. If he could do that in strokeplay he'd be undisputed number one.
He's easy to dislike but jesus, what a player. Would love to hear what he said the night before to them all, got them all up for it so I hear.

Re: The official ryder cup thread.....
I said to my wife when the line ups came out that this was achievable. Europe were lucky there were no mismatches - every single one was winnable. For example, there was no:
Watson/Bradley v Molinari/Hansen
Equally there was no
Poulter/Rose/McIlroy v Stricker/Woods
That must have given the boys heart right off the bat and then the first 5 went blue (all from Brits!), with Rose's point being the turning point of the match.
Also, at the time thought Woods was actually very classy conceding that putt to Molinari. Looking back on it, maybe he just didn't give a sh*t!

Absolutely hanging in work this morning, but worth every bit of pain, tiredness and exhaustion. Unbelievable result Europe!
So good to hear the US chants diminishing throughout the evening.
Rose's play against Mickelson on the 17th and 18th was simply phenomenal!
