1-0 kb? Quite the contrary I would think. All I've really heard here so far is all about the words - what about the music? How many of these artists are actually musicians?

Ok, ok, calm down.
This round isn't about music, it's hip hop. It's about artistic expression, using four key elements, Rapping, DJing, Beatboxing and Sampling. Being able to put your own spin on an old song, or creating new classics from your own ideas. Plenty of classic hip hop songs are born out of old songs.
Eminem's Like Toy Soldiers was a classic song and it sampled 80's pop icon Martika. 2Pac got to number 1 sampling The Way it Is by Bruce Hornsby and Indian Summer by Elton John on Ghetto Gospel. Jay Z had a hit sampling Annie!

So do i! The point is though he took a classic and put a hip-hop twist on it. That is what 'music' is about and specifically this genre. Not everything is about harpsichords and xylophones, Davie!

Re: Music Cup Round 7 - Hip Hop
you forgot the lute
But honestly - when you start by saying "this round isn't about music", then why is it called the Music Cup? There isn't a single musician amongst them and all they are doing is putting "poetry" over something else they've stolen.
Want to praise them for their lyrical prowess? Call it poetry then. they don't play instruments, they steal a tune from someone else and just sample it and they don't even sing! all they do is talk over it.
Music? I don't think so

Re: Music Cup Round 7 - Hip Hop
I just had a look at the songs from my year of birth:
http://www.severing.nu/music/1973UK.html
How could I choose from that - there is about 15 songs that are all awesome! And no JayZ or Tupac in sight!

Well it is still music just generally the aforementioned artists have not actually made it, they have done a production. Alica Keys actually is a pianist & she can sing unlike a lot of the manufactured 'singers' in the top 40. There are some live hip hop groups out there The Roots & The Goats spring to mind, also I think Black Twang has used musicians on some of his tracks.

Re: Music Cup Round 7 - Hip Hop
I think its complete and utter snobbery to criticise artists who don't write their own music. It doesn't matter one bit. Someone could be the most talented singer in the world, but not be able to write a song for toffee - should their talent not be heard?
As for the argument that hip hop artists aren't musicians - that's poppycock. Of course they are. One thing they most certainly are not - is poets. No musician is a poet. Not Dylan, not Morrissey, not Eminem. Music is not poetry. If it is, its poetry for the idiotic and the illiterate.

Re: Music Cup Round 7 - Hip Hop
Although I agree that this music cup sucks (or the people voting suck) I would also agree with Demon - taking other music and doing something else is musical genius.
For example Procul Harems a"A whiter Shade of Pake" riffs on Bach!
And as for choosing your favourite from the list Miky - how can you choose your favourite if you havent listened to all of them? You are picking the ones you know not your facourite.

BTW - I wholeheartedly agree with Hobo, that the people who are voting suck. And I'm still confused over what we are supposed to be nominating - our favourite, or the the one we think will secure the most votes. I've been nominating my favourite.
(Which is probably why I'm second bottom!)

Yeah, it seems that this is a competition of what people know rather than what people like. How 2pac isn't running away with this I will never know. That Jay-Z song is some of his poorer work.

Punk
I'm not accepting nominations yet but as of Tuesday next week so any sent in beforehand will not be accepted.

Re: Music Cup Round 7 - Hip Hop
I never thought I'd be more disappointed/disgusted in a set of voters as I was when this supposedly intelligent nation voted for Mr. TV, Nick Clegg and his manifesto of impossible to deliver promises, which resulted in the worst, most precariously assembled government in living memory.
However, the electorate balloted in this little game is doing a good job of matching that disgust.
Hero - I've sent you my vote winner. Don't bother putting a youtube link as I doubt anyone will listen to it.

I agree with the second part of your post - I actually like the coalition government though!
This round should be interesting as I cant think of any punk records released in the last 10 years (unless you count Busted!)

Mine is a punk song, but not from a punk band. And was released about 20 years ago.

I went with something that's 17 years old but by a famous band. But i was torn with something slightly older.

Re: Music Cup Round 7 - Hip Hop
Mine’s a classic (if I manage to get it), it’s one like in the last round though which should do well but probably isn’t as well heard of as more modern songs (like how Sugar Hill Gangs came 2nd last but was IMO one the best)
