First topic message reminder :

Irani Trophy is out of the way....Challenger is ongoing.......Duleep Trophy will start soon and then the entire Ranji season with a new 3 group and 2 tier structure.
In between there are A tours........India A in NZ and then Eng-A side comes to play India-A.

It warrants a separate thread

The Duleep Trophy final between east zone and central zone is delaied due to rains. Organizing a match in Chennai this time of the year, you can't really be surprised at that.

VVS Laxman to lead Hyderabad in the domestic season. India spinner Pragyan Ojha also in the squad, although he may not be playing many matches due to national commitments.

selectors should make it compulsory for EVERYONE to play the opening 2 rounds of Ranji to be eligible for selection.

sehwag looked in good touch today on bouncy SA pitches.....but even he should play for Delhi..he is their captain

Sehwag should most certainly play and play well in fact. He has been far too inconsistent over the last couple of years, along with his friend and Delhi teammate Gautam Gambhir who should also take the opportunity to find some runs and touch in the Ranji before that first test.

East struggling against central at lunch on 150-6. Jalaj Saxena with 4 wickets so far. Praveen Kumar has figures of 14-7-12-0 and Murali Kartik has just given away 9 runs in his 10 overs and picked up a wicket.
Jarkhand youngster Ishank Jaggi is the only remaining hope for east and at lunch he's not out on 48.

Saxena gets a 5-fer as E.Z is dismissed for 230 odd......and that implies it was bad batting more than great bowling,
central simply needs to overxome that paltry score and take the duleep trophy.

Dinda is the only threat C.Z need to overcome......dunno where is sami ahmed

Highlight for EZ was an unbeaten hundred from Ishank Jaggi. Jaggi's effort was particularly impressive as he had no real support from the rest of the lineup other than a brief resistance from wicket keeper Shiv Gautam. Jaggi went from 67 to hundred in the company of last man Alok Mangaraj, with the pare batting out almost 13 overs. Besides Jalaj Suxena's 5fer , Madhya Pradesh medium pacer Ishwar Pandey picked up 2 wickets, and Praveen Kumar, Murali Kartik and Bhuvneshwar Kumar a wicket each.

A batting collapse instigated by Iresh Saxena (5-58) and Anustup Majumdar (4-29) undermined a knock of 94 by central Zone opener Tanmay Srivastava and enabled east Zone to win the Duleep trophy on first innings lead. Central, after Srivastava and Rajasthan's Vineet Saxena put on 68 for the first wicket collapsed to 97-4, with the likes of Mohammed Kaif, Robin Bist and Ashok Menaria failing. Although they recovered through a bit of a partnership between Srivastava and wicketkeeper Mahesh Rawat, were eventually bowled out for 189.

Sachin Tendulkar, Zaheer Khan, Ajinkya Rahane and Rohit Sharma are all named in the Mumbai squad for their first match of the Ranji Trophy.
Tendulkar is playing a Ranji match for his side almost after 4 years and this will be Zaheer's first appearance for Mumbai in a year.
Wasim Jaffer is unavailable and Harmeet Singh is out with an injury. Suryakumar Yadav will be leading an MCA side against the touring England team.

Meanwhile the MCA side that plays against the English has 2 high profile non-Mumbai players, India batsman Cheteshwar Pujara and a possible reserve opener Shikhar Dhawan. Dhawan won't be playing the A game, but he should nevertheless get a chance to put up his case for national selection through a good performance against England.

Meryck Pringle ( who invokes images of a bleeding eye on the field)....is Rajsthan's bowling coach since last season and he did turn them into a disciplined hard working seam bolwing unit of Rituraj, Chahar and Pankaj Singh........Pankaj's pace noticeably went up 5 kph upto 136ks......and he attributes it to Pringle

Among India's first choice test players, only captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni has opted out of the first round of the Ranji Trophy. Cheteshwar Pujara won't feature either as his side won't be involved in the first round of matches that start later today. But then he'll be involved in the warm up match against England.
Dhoni, who plays in all formats for the country, keeps wicket and captains, has lots of responsibilities and he and Virat Kohli are the prime ODI batsmen for the country. But I am really disappointed that he isn't involved in this first round of Ranji. The cricinfo report that he hasn't played a match for his Ranji side after his test debut has come as news for me, although to be fair to Dhoni, either he was on India duty, or by the time he was available, Jarkhand would have crashed out after the first stage.

Why don't they put up a Bord President's side for the practice match in place of Haryana? Would have given more fringe players opportunity. I really don't like the concept of Pujara and Dhawan playing for Mumbai or Haryana just like that. Of course they could transfer the usual way, but this just doesn't make sense.
I hope they don't play the no-ball specialist Amit Mishra in the Hariana side.

There must be some convoluted rationale behind playing Haryana instead of a BP XI or a Gujarat or Baroda side given that match is in amdavad.

to watch out for Haryana will be Harshad Patel the young kid who can bowl at 140kph and had a good Ranji debut season last year......Amit Mishra ( still the best leggie in the country IMO) and young bastmen like Tehlan and Sunny singh

Patel is an interesting prospect. Would like to see how he would go about in this season.
If Amit Mishra is the best leggy in the country a position I would want to contest but can't because he still is better than Piyush Chawla, it really is a very sorry state.
Hope this season would throw up some decent prospect in the spin department. Other than the 2 national spinners Ashwin and Ojha, the only others from whom there can be expectations are Vikas Mishra, Harmeet Singh and R Aushik Srinivas. None of them have developed to be worthy of consideration for test consideration as yet.

Gambhir and Sehwag fall apart for 20s and 30s in seaming conditions....against a competent UP new ball attack.

tendulkar not batting at his customary No.4 against Mumbai........lowered himsefl to shield himself from the new ball ?

India-A players have all jointed their respective sides.

generally speaking the scores in a dozen odd Ranji games show a common pattern...that the new ball bowlers have plucked out top 2 or 3........common feature on wintery morning in North, East and Western India for seamer to get a lot of movement with the new ball in the first hour or so.

Yuvraj isn't playing, the rest of them are all in.
Former India wicketkeeper Parthiv Patel with the first hundred of this Ranji season, and India fast bowler Umesh Yadav with the first 5 wicket performance. Yadav's 5 was the major factor in Haryana getting shot out for 55 in their first innings.

Sachin Tendulkar celebrates his Mumbai return in 3 years with a ton. His first in FC cricket since that mighty fine knock against South Africa in early 2011. Ajinkya Rahane and Irfan Pathan also completed their tons.
Failures for Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir, Virat Kohli and VVS Laxman. Imtiyaz Ahmed of Uttar Pradesh picked up 5 wickets against Delhi, and former India seamer Praveen Kumar picked up 3, although he had a bit of an injury concern in between.

Tendulkar wasn' tested...he came at No.5 when the ball was old and against a really gentle attack of Railways.

--But Runs are runs....and time in the middle in a real match situation counts...so good for tendulkar and India's preparation.

Rahane did an unbeaten 100.

--3 batsmen in India's first test match i.e Gambhir , Kohli and Sehwag fell cheaply to seam bowling was not good news.

Tendulkar and the Delhi guys should all play the 2nd round Ranji game also.......and they will have a chnace to bat in the 2nd innings also since these are all 4 day games

--Yadav's 5 for 18 is really heartening...India doesn't count on him so much but on his day he is the fastest in the world.....and can run throuh the best of sides.
figures suggest that he was impossible to handle with pace and seaming conditions by haryana's batting.

--Tiwari did a 40 odd for bengal

--yuvraj probably didn't find an airplane connection timely to get to Mohali last night. Bhajji had 20 wicketless overs....
But that's been the trend on this opening ranji day....seam bowlers have ruled.

lolz... Actually, who is the fastest bowler in the world nowadays? Cummins if fit would have a good claim, but Steyn, Finn, Pattinson, Starc, Roach are all similar pace 88-92 mph. There isn't anyone real express pace in the mould of Tait, Lee or Shoaib (or... Mohammed Sami in his younger days) who hits 95+ consistently.

I would have said Yadav was a notch below that, more 85-90 category alongside maybe Morkel, Edwards, maybe Rampaul, Siddle (with his steam up), Gul, etc...

On his day...he could be the fastest in the world is what I said.....whihc is diffrent from saying " he is absolutely the fastest in the world".

On their day i reckon any of the following could be fastest in the world today... all capable of breaking the 150 barrier

Yadav, Pattinson, Cummin, Finn, Marchant De Lang and still Steyn

Yadav hit 155kph in Australia...that is 97mph.....
here is what I could find....him bowling at 152.5 kph that's 95.5mph

Would agree with it somewhat. Yadav at his best can go up to the late 140 KPH at times though, but yeah, mostly he's between the late 130s to the mid 140s

It is so much excitement to see Umesh coming up for an Indian. To see a pacer bowling really fast is not something we are used to!, of course when we bowl that is!.

srinath was in the 150+ speed at his peak and before his shoulder injury......as is Aaron now.

It was good to see Pathan in runs.....not out with a 100....now he only needs to keep picking wickets and soon he will present himself as the first in line should Zaheer breadown or not recover form

From my observations over the last couple of years the most consistent Test fast bowlers operate mostly between 84 and 88 (mph) with an effort ball at 90+. Those that can't reach the 90 (such as Philander and Bresnan) can at least push towards that lower category when they really try. But those trying to bowl every ball at 90+ tend to quickly fade or suffer from injuries.

Who is consistently the fastest right now? Probably Finn, Roach or Cummins (though he hasn't played a Test for a year, and then only one).

There also still seems to be some disparity in Speed Guns. Channel Nine in Australia seem to regularly record bowlers at 150+ kph whilst Sky's speed gun rarely hits the 90 mark, even when Steyn and Morkel are bowling...

To me Cummins and now even Pattinson and simon Jones types don't count as in fast bowlers club.....because they are broken down much more than they play.
Implies they are bowling faster than their body can sustain.
Or conversely if they bowl within their boady tolerance limits....they wouldn't be able to bowl as fast.

To me Michel Johnson and Yadav also belong in the "fastest men's club" today.

You are right...guns in Eng record speed a wee bit less.....while guns in India are more in line with what we see in Aus.

so poor Broad maligned for his 129kph speed will suddenly show in India an increase to 133 kph Very Happy

--Binny continues his good form with the ball and picks a 5-fer to polish off the baroda lower order.

--Pankaj singh takes 5 against a good bengal side.....Pankaj should be in the scheme of things for India-A atleast

--gony is back from injury.....takes 4 for punjab and limits Hyd.
Bhajji goes wktless

--UP are batting solidyl after dismissing starstudded Delhi for 230odd.
Ishant has taken the only wkt for delhi so far and Raina yet to bat

KPF seems the sun is out for that Delhi-UP match. I am afraid for team India, if Raina gets a score in flat conditions, he might make the squad. He for me isn't a test cricketer.
Meanwhile Dheeraj Jadhav scores the first double century of the season. Impressive from Stuart Binny, continuing his good work from the last season as well as the Duleep trophy match earlier. Hopes he and Manish Pandey will be among the runs.

The match report from cricinfo indicates Ishant Sharma managed to generate sharp pace throughout the day. While that is good, his lack of wickets, is pretty much in line with his usual issues. Can't take cover behind claims that it is due to the length he bowls, a strike bowler has to strike, and he has to work out the best way to make use of his skills to good effect. If Praveen Kumar, Ashok Dinda or Pankaj Singh continue to have the kind of impact that they managed so far in the season, think one of them should be the pace backup to Zaheer and Umesh in the test squad.

dhoni has his favorites...and Ishant is one, Rohit is anotehr one, Raina is anotehr one, RP singh is anotehr one.

Ishant has to pitch up more..simply......and consistently.

with his inability to deliver results Dhoni has lost the power to bargain for his favorites....he is barely hanging with a fine thread to his place and test match captaincy for now.

Raina scratched around 70 balls for his unbeaten 19...as spinners did late damage to UP's score.
Its very likely the Delhi boys will get to bat again tomorrow....so there is a 2nd chance for Gambhir, Sehwag and Kohli to make it count.

Zaheer noticably failed to get any wkts in his 11 overs against Railways.....that match though marked the return of Abhishek Nayar who to me is also an India potential...has been unfortunate with injuries

Zaheer doesn't have a wicket after 16 overs of bowling.....
Raina was out for a scartchy 55......but Praveen kumar's late order heroic saw them upto 400.

Unmukt chand opened in place of sehwag and failed....gambhir and Kohli are batting...sehwag due at No. 4 Shocked
Has he injured himself or have the powers asked him to ba himself in the middle ?

Binny after his 5-fer is in runs as Karnataka are trailing and Irfan amongst wickets...good to see two seam bolwing allrounders do well.
