Woods confirms Ryder Cup captaincy ambitions.
First topic message reminder :
28-0 to Europe.
That would be like John Terry being in charge of The Commission for Racial Equality or Shane Lowry in charge of Weight Watchers.

So why would you put someone who has an obvious failing in charge of something that they aren't good at.
Would Sampras be an effective Clay court coach?

The RC captain doesnt do a jot of coaching Super, not one tiny bit. They do a bit of management. Thats it.

Had to do a double-take when I read that but he didn't did he? Pretty incredible given his ability over that distance.Diggers wrote:Most great sportsmen has a failing somewhere, Sampras on lay, Federer Olympic gold, Ali with Frazier..and norton.....Seb Coe didnt win a global Olympic 800 title which is just amazing really.

Nor does Martin O Neill, but he's still an influence on his players.
While we're at it, what's the point of football captains?

I dont think there is much point in football captains. O Neill appoints the coaches he wants, thats all part oft he big decisiosn he makes about having a huge role in running a club 365 days a year.

Re: Woods confirms Ryder Cup captaincy ambitions.
There's probably lot of mileage in managers being a bit over-rated in what they do for a team, whether that's Ryder Cup captains, Football managers, or Davis Cup captains, but to suggest a Ryder Captain does nothing just isn't correct.

Probabaly not, theen again to suggest he definitely wont make a good captain just because he wasnt a great RC player is also probably incorrect.

"but to suggest a Ryder Captain does nothing just isn't correct."
As I said they don’t do nothing. They just don’t impact the final score.
They are the face of each team during the build up and need to act in sort of brand ambassador role. They need to present a professional image which investors in the event can use to promote the product.
Given tiger’s success as a commercial entity of the years in what ways do you see him falling short as a captain?

Re: Woods confirms Ryder Cup captaincy ambitions.
I reckon his lack of dynamism as a person would be more of an issue than his hysterical Ryder Cup record. He comes across much like a Faldo, but worse. Too much ego I think.
Of course they impact the final score. They select the wildcards, set up the course, pick the pairing and the order of the pairings and order of what type of match they play they play, give motivational speeches, determine who is left out and for what, and manage the disappointment of such choices etc.
Would Europe have won the last Ryder Cup with a jumble sale frequenting, bus to the golf course, guardian reader as Captain?

Super, please answer the question.

If you dont agree that it is the only impact the captain has you can at least give a response to why you think tiger would not be a good "face" for the US team and why he would not provide a commercial success for the cup?

Re: Woods confirms Ryder Cup captaincy ambitions.
Whether or not Woods is a good commercial face is an irrelevance to his ability to be a good captain regarding the outcome of the event.
Would he be a good face, I don't think so other than for non golfers. I don't see him as a team player, and American's don't like losers, and Woods is a Ryder Cup loser.

So super
You are saying that Tiger would be a poor captain in terms of driving column inches and sponsor money in the run up to a ryder cup?

Mac, I don't care about the financial benefits of Captaincy. I think in his administration of team affairs in realtion to team performance he would be appalling.
It doesn't matter who is in charge, Woods or You, the Ryder Cup doesn't need more column inches, hype or sponsor money.

Super
As golf sponsorship shrinks in the coming years it may be crucial that no event becomes complacent.

Give over Mac, if the Ryder Cup was so dependent on financial backing then the sponsorship would be a bit more visible wouldn't it.
You'd be hard pressed to name any companies involved now or at any time in the past, so what makes you think it would be difficult in future?

How does this sound:
"The Vivendi Ryder Cup protected by Severiano Ballesteros."

I guess it's only a matter of time before the Murdochs try to get it renamed the Skyder cup...
