The trick is to find a DM who can pass the ball and bring it forward, like Khedira/Toulalan/Barry Whistle although it does Barca and Spain no harm to have Busquets there.

I think it depends on the other midfielders. If the other midfielders are more naturally attacking, then I think you need one to sit more naturally deeper.

It also depends on your defenders. Are your CBs less mobile and in need of the protection. Do your FBs bomb on a lot, and therefore need covering

Got me a new Samsung Galaxy. I won't get partisan because of the Apple/Android factions, but it is a fantastic phone. Much lighter than my old HTC, and much faster.

Arsenal have used the likes of Viera (at times), Gilberto, Flamini and Song.

I disagree, but I think I have a slightly different idea of what counts as a DM, in all the top sides:

Arsenal - Arteta
Chelsea - Mikel
Man City - Barry/Javi Garcia
Man Utd - Carrick
Newcastle - Tiote
Tottenham - Parker/Sandro

Every team needs that 'boring' player in midfield who will just keep the ball and sit. Doesn't mean they stay back 100% of the time but nine times out of ten. I can go round all the European sides as well if you want?

If you lot want to know what a DM is then look at Claude Makelelle. He is the type of player who always stays back and protects the back four.

I'd call Makelele, Mikel and De Jong 'pure' DM's, but I don't think it's necessary to have one, as long as you have someone like Carrick, Arteta etc.

I agree with Trebs, every team needs a midfielder to shield the back four and do the simple things

That doesn't mean he is 6ft 6, sprinting around breaking legs though, just someone disciplined and tactically astute. Look at Arteta at Arsenal this year, or Noble at West Ham. Not classic "DMs" but being disciplined and shielding the defence before setting the team on attacks.

Yeah but at West Ham as a midfielder you're either defending or standing near the target man.

Arsenal also use Diaby as b2b this year, last year Song declined to actually defend.

I agree with Sodhat, you don't need to be a tough tackling, power house, leg cruncher to be classed as a DM. It's the players positioning and tactical awareness that I rate above being a good tackler to play as a DM.

Prevent danger rather then cure danger is my motto, thats why the tough tackler is not needed as much for me but I still play one in fear of being marked down.

Song isn't a DM at all, he's more of a box to box and would be good alongside a Carrick type player. Like Yaya Toure or Darren Fletcher.

Saying whether they need a DM is far too general. it depends entirely on the tactics and the rest of the team.

Also this. Its not strictly necessary in a 4-4-2, but I'd gambit its a good idea to play one in a 3 man midfield

Come off it. Carrick wouldn't get near any of the top Spanish teams. Because as a nation we've produced comparatively few ball players compared to other countries, anybody who can pass a ball instantly gets hyped. Hes far too negative for me, rarely moves the ball forward

I'll counter that with another argument. If Pirlo was English, would he be anywhere near the England squad? No.

Because you get numpties like you who say he's 'one of the best midfielders in the world' Laugh

If Carrick was so good, he'd be an England regular, have 80 caps by now, be rated by everyone and have been chased by big clubs for years. The people who under-rate Carrick - who is a decent player - don't under-rate him nearly as much as the people who over-rate him over-rate him. He'd struggle to make a top 50 midfielders in the world, in all honesty.

Carrick doesn't do enough consistently to warrant the praise some give him. But on his day he's a quality back-up to Lampard/Gerrard who quite simply are better than him.

its this funny thing that United fans rate him highly, everyone else doesn't. I think he is a good player, but United need better to step up IMO. They need a true Roy Keane type in there instead.

If Pirlo was English, would he be anywhere near the England squad? No.

Laugh

If Pirlo was English, yes he would. He'd have been Scholes' replacement when he retired. Comparing Carrick to Pirlo is just crazy.

England have missed out on a few players like that though, ones that don't necessarily fit the classic English mentality.

Carrick was unfortunate to be behind Lampard/Gerrard, but to have someone like Gareth Barry with more England caps than him is a pretty big aberration in my opinion (no offence to whomever has Barry on here).
