Good grief! Just seen this story. I do hope Flintoff isn't going to become the new Gazza ....

Embarassing. I'd still expect him to beat Audley Harrison though...

Re: Flintoff - the BOXER
yeah he probally would!!
Anyway It was kinda good to see him so fit- I have never seen him in that shape- Kinda sucks that he didnt do the same when he was playing cricket!!
He should have had a personal trainer back then- Could have been an all time great!

I expressed my worries about how Freddie would deal with the loss of the spotlight shortly after his retirement. These worries were exacerbated with his ill-informed and needlessly expressed rant at Mike Atherton. I hope this isn't another step down that path...
Comparisons with Gazza are so far well-made. Let's hope things turn out better for Flintoff, but he'll need good advice and help.

Re: Flintoff - the BOXER
To be fair, he's nowhere near as bad as Gazza who really is a basket case and as bad as anything seen since George Best.
Freddie's career post cricket has been laughable though. A few woeful TV shows, a Morrison's advert and now this.

Re: Flintoff - the BOXER
Freddie is earning money i suppose- and keeping fit at the same time. I suppose he looks like he has a chance to make money and is still earning.. He has done alot of runs etc for charity as well..
Clearly becoming a pro boxer is abit delusional!!
Gazza poor lad- seems to be close to being ruined forthe rest of his life, I hope he gets some peace and stays of the booze.

I've thought this too Mysti. Must be the only professional sportsman who's actually got fitter after retirement.

Re: Flintoff - the BOXER
Perhaps Freddie was inspired by Adam Hollioake who took up cage fighting. His professional debut in May this year ended in what sounded like a fairly painful draw. Could be something to do with getting renewed sense of purpose for keeping fit, getting some structure back into life....

Re: Flintoff - the BOXER
I suspect, unfortunately, its all about money. People will pay more to watch him box (probably vs an opponent they think he'll beat) than they will all but the very elite.
Freddie's been left in the difficult position of still only being 34, and watching everyone else in his generation get their pockets lined by the IPL whilst he can't do anything. He doesn't have the Strauss-type character which allows him to move on without really missing it; nor does he have the stability of a job in the cricket media or in coaching.
So he has to turn to increasingly weird ways to do something. I suspect that, like KP, he has an ego which needs massaging and getting paid money to box serves that purpose.
I also wouldn't be entirely surprised to see him as the next cricketer on Strictly Come Dancing.

Well these reality shows or talent shows are begining to get mundane.. Maybe its time to start up celeb boxing or something fronted by ChrisEeubank and Frank Bruno..

Re: Flintoff - the BOXER
Perhaps its about the money and the lack of spotlight that is making Flintoff go into these rather weird ways.

Re: Flintoff - the BOXER
Then if he has, it makes sense, for a guy in his middle thirties to start boxing with no experience is dangerous.

I've seen him spar and he looks like he's done a bit of boxing. I suppose Boxing is better than drinking. Good luck to him.

I'm sure that's right. Flintoff is now living in my neck of the woods, although a much more affluent part; Cobham, home of the Chelsea training ground and several of their players. He won't find it cheap in that area and mixing with that sort of company.

Exactly, Shane Watson once said he wanna become like Freddie, a great talent who never realized his actual potential.

Blimey, was put down in the second but won on points in the end. Good for him.
Retire now Freddie with a winning record.

So a bandicoot bitten, starving and one hand tied behind his back - David Haye could have taken him out.
Or was he better than that?

Re: Flintoff - the BOXER
They should do an boxing contest which honours the ashes test series every4 or so years. Flintoff and Botham can represent England; whilst the Australians can have guys like David Boon and Ian Chapell

Now that Ponting's retired, we can have him go toe-to-toe with Freddie in the ring!

I would rather see a heavyweight contest between those 2 arch enemies Ian Botham and Ian Chappell.Duty281 wrote:Now that Ponting's retired, we can have him go toe-to-toe with Freddie in the ring!

Re: Flintoff - the BOXER
i was hoping this fight would be it, but if it was, it would just show that it was a publicty stunt..
if he fights anyone half decent he will get knocked out, and no one wants to see that!!
