Smackdown 22/04/11 Spoilers.
WWE taped this week's Smackdown today from the London O2 Arena in London, England. Thanks to Wrestling News World reader Murdo Mackenzie for providing us with live updates. Below are full results:
* Michael Cole comes out to occupy The Cole Mine which features a royal looking gold and burgundy throne by it. Josh Mathews and Booker T follow.
* The World Heavyweight Championship belt is suspended above the ring.
Smackdown (Airing Friday on SyFy):
* The show opens with a Edge video package followed by a rundown of the Extreme Rules lineup. On tonight's show, Big Show & Kane will face Heath Slater & Justin Gabriel for the WWE Tag Team Championship and Kofi Kingston will face Wade Barrett for the WWE Intercontinental Championship.
* Sir Michael Cole comes out to the British National Anthem to a ton of heat.
* Cody Rhodes comes out with three men wearing suits with one pushing a shopping cart. In the cart there are paper bags. Rhodes instructs his posse to hand out the bags to the crowd because they all need them. Everyone on the front row is given a brown paper back to put over their head. Rhodes cuts a heel promo which leads to his Wrestlemania XXVII rematch with Rey Mysterio.
* Cody Rhodes vs. Rey Mysterio. Winner via reversed powerbomb into a sit down pin, Rey Mysterio. After the match, Rhodes beats him down and they brawl on the outside. Cody finally gets the upper hand after a lengthy battle and puts a paper bag over Mysterio's head.
* Michael Cole introduces Jack Swagger after footage from his Knighting Ceremony from this week's WWE Raw airs.
* Jack Swagger vs. Trent Barreta. Swagger makes him tap out in the ankle lock in a squash match.
* Big Show and Kane are shown walking backstage to the ring as their match for the WWE Tag Team Championship is up next.
* The new Awesome Kong vignette airs.
* For the WWE Tag Team Championship, Big Show & Kane vs. Heath Slater & Justin Gabriel w/Ezekiel Jackson. Winners & new WWE Tag Team Champions, Big Show & Kane. They got the win after miss-communication from The Corre.
* Backstage, The Corre argue and Ezekiel Jackson blames Heath Slater. Slater pushes Justin Gabriel.
* Drew McIntyre vs. Chris Masters. Winner after hitting the Future Shock DDT, Drew McIntyre
Wade Barrett b. Kofi Kingston to retain the WWE Intercontinental Championship. Ezekiel Jackson came out with Barrett but when he nearly cost him the match by accidentally clotheslining him, Barrett banished him to backstage.
* Alberto Del Rio hosts a retirement party for Edge. He comes out and unveils his gifts to the Rated R Superstar... A grandfather clock, adult diapers and the love of his life Lita. Out comes a very obese lady posing as Lita. Del Rio also says he got him a new ride. Ricardo Rodriguez drives a mobile scooter out to an Edge-like entrance. Del Rio tells Brodus Clay to attack Edge (who is on the ramp) but as Clay goes up the ramp Christian is hiding under the ring with a ladder. He attacks Clay on the ramp then takes out Del Rio. Christian gets in the ring with the ladder and grabs the World Heavyweight Championship from up top. Edge applauds from the ramp to end the show.
After the show:
* Christian hosts a proper farewell for Edge.

Big Show & Kane.
Oh goody WWE have gone back to the pairing two single guys who haven't got anything to do so can destroy the tag teams for a bit.

Re: Smackdown 22/04/11 Spoilers.
Did I not read the other day that there was already tension and misunderstanding between Big Show and Kane? Or am I imagining that?
Teasing a feud between the 2 giants, which won't really grab my attention all that much, just as they win the titles?
I thought it was meant to be: -
They win the titles.
They have a few successful defences
One of them starts to claim he does all the work - they resent each other
The one that claims he does all the work gets left in a match by the other
They split.
Of course; if I AM imagining this...then that little rant is of no relevance.

Re: Smackdown 22/04/11 Spoilers.
I haven't been this excited about a tag team since Tekno Team 2000.
Big Show and Kane are going to reinvent tag team wrestling and bring it into the 21st century!
Either that or they're going to win some matches, fall out, lose the tag titles and then feud.
Lather. Rinse. Repeat.

I know this may be a bit of a hope.
Maybe they are trying to get some credibility back to the tag division?

Re: Smackdown 22/04/11 Spoilers.
By having two behemoths that can barely move around the ring and in Big Show's case decimate factions for no point? (SES, CORRE)
Don't hold your breath Miky.

By throwing 2 giants who don't have any chemistry together and letting them destroy actual established tag teams?

Fair point, what i meant was more so was that they are quite over. Just thought this may help a bit as they are both recognised so if they have the titles then they may be taken seriously. It's a case of been there done that though.

Re: Smackdown 22/04/11 Spoilers.
See Miky, when WWE put the tag titles on an actual tag team (Hart Dynasty) or else 2 established stars who are good (Edge & Chris Jericho), we all get excited and think to ourselves "Maybe they're finally going to properly focus on the tag division!"
And then Vince splits up the proper tag team for no good reason, or puts the belts on a mish-mash team like Big Show & Kane and we curse ourselves for ever getting our hopes up.
It's the circle of life my friend.

True man, true.
I thought Hart Dynasty were quality and was proper starting to buy into them as a decent tag team and they had the Usos to feud with and then everything went to pot. Has anyone seen the Usos for ages? I think they appear sometimes on superstars but still...

Re: Smackdown 22/04/11 Spoilers.
The way to build a tag team division is the way they did in the late 90's and early 00's... there you had three great teams and some other riff raff putting on great matches and they were given the platform to put on those matches.
I am amazed that more up and coming talent don't realise that following the Edge, Christian or Jeff Hardy (bar the drugs) route is a great way to get established in the industry and then move onto to top level singles competition.
Tag teams should be about chemistry and working together. Not about two guys so big that they look like they could defeat the other team in a handicap match.
They need to build some of the tag teams they have (Slater and Gabriel, Hart Dynasty etc) and maybe bring in some established teams ... Beer Money?! ... to revitalise the whole division.

Totally agree with what you said Josh, but that paragraph should read: I am amazed WWE don't realise that following the Edge, Christian or Jeff Hardy (bar the drugs) route is a great way to get established in the industry and then move onto to top level singles competition.

Re: Smackdown 22/04/11 Spoilers.
The problem with them taking Beer Money would be that Roode is definitely destined for singles competition. Storm on the other hand....is not. Vince would split them up in no time...despite the fact they are one of the best tag teams around at the moment.
Re: Smackdown 22/04/11 Spoilers.
There’s a huge number of guys coming through from FCW over the past couple of years and for the most part the tag division has been ignored.
For me I’d have a NXT series where it’s exclusively tag teams. Actually build up feuds there that then transfer into longterm rivalries when they make the eventual move over to the proper shows.

Great idea...but I have one question. Who would you have as pro's?
It would make much more sense to have a tag team acting as the pro. I guess they could get ex-tag team wrestlers that have gone solo to do it...
More likely...VKM wouldn't care. He's give the best tag team on there Swoggle as their pro.

Yes I’d look at bringing back tag stars to run them, they wouldn’t have to be guys that are active currently on the roster as they wouldn’t be needed to take part themselves.
Then you could have the likes of Christian, Edge (friendly rivalry there), Bret, Shelton Benjamin, Animal, Billy Gunn & Arn Anderson.

I went with Benjamin just because he had a dark match more recently so is on better terms, I think Haas has shot his mouth off a bit since leaving (saying that though I have Billy Gunn in there!)
Re: Smackdown 22/04/11 Spoilers.
Lol fair enough.
I didn't know that Benjamin has had a dark match. On RAW or Smackdown mate?
I still think your idea is really good mate.

Re: Smackdown 22/04/11 Spoilers.
Cracking idea Hero, then the pros could emphasise that tag team wrestling is an entirely different art form to singles wrestling.
I think that's part of the reason tag team wrestling has died in WWE, it used to be seen as a 'specialist event' and the commentators even used to refer to guys as 'tag team specialists'. Now you get 2 wrestlers teaming up for the first time and winning the tag championships.

I'm sure show and kane tagged teamed few years back and did rather well.
Could be a lengthy rein this, anyone feel this is hinting at their last few years in wrestling.
Be interested to see how jackson and barrett develop appears that, jackson will break away on his own, he's been tipped for a big future this year.

WWE made a big mistake not making Cryme Tyme tag champions they were an amazing tag team.

Re: Smackdown 22/04/11 Spoilers.
I wouldn't agree Cryme Tyme were an amazing tag-team but they were definitely well over with the fans, and it was a bizarre decision to split them when they were one of the few truly bonded teams left. JTG is now bottom of the tier of TV wrestlers and Shad is somewhere back in developmental I think...great thinking there WWE!!!
Giving Kane and Show the tag-belts is poor, in my opinion. These two need to be used to put over the younger talent in singles matches, Big Show especially could provide someone with the momentum for a major push. Look what he did for Goldberg and Lesnar.
I'm not sure why the WWE even bothered putting together The Corre, when they clearly had no faith in allowing them to be a dominant faction. Why was Jackson even in there in the first place when he has nothing in common with the others? Why should we even care that he's turning against them? Rubbish.

So what do you all think of the creative team blatantly stealing the beautiful people's trademark paper bag gimmick. They used this non stop in TNA for around 6 months and here we are Cody rhodes doing the same WWE shocking.

Regardless of whether Cody is guilty of stealing a TNA gimmick... he sure looks guilty of having stolen a Sainsbury's trolley... its even got the bottle rack on the bottom!

Shelton Benjamin had a dark match because he was backstage anyway because WWE was in his hometown and they offered him one for old times (or probably to please the crowd)

I really think WWE could spice up its tag division by hosting a japan style, veterans teaming with up and comers style tournament with the winner getting a shot at the tag titles, of course this would require interest and careful planning from the WWE so its unlikely to happen

Re: Smackdown 22/04/11 Spoilers.
I think that there is potential for some of these tag teams in the division - after all if E&C / Hardys hadn't got the pushes they did late 90's then they could have been FE'd like Hart Dynasty etc appear to be close to.
The WWE roster is hardly big and I am amazed there isn't the room to have some tag team matches... then again about 70% of the show is taken up by random promos from Michael Cole and recaps from previous episodes so there may not be room!!
Talking of Cole, I thought that the job of the announcer was to talk up the talent and make people at home think it is the best match and the best performers that they are etc... Cole spends every match slot burying people and talking over their matches about whatever twaddle he is going on about. No wonder younger talent is struggling when one of the company's lead commentators has no faith or respect for them.
