Sidney Wood is the only player to have won a slam by a walkover in the final - Wimbledon 1931.

No, it was a deliberate ploy (allegedly) by the US Davis Cup captain, to rest his two Wimbledon finalists by having the other one, Frank Shields, withdraw from the final with an 'injury'.
But they still lost the ensuing Davis Cup tie to GB!

Should we really start threads about people controversially pulling out of Grand Slam matches?

Amazing that Davis cup was seen to be more valuable than a slam by that Davis cup captain. Sounds like a counterproductive starategy I didn't know fitness was such an issue.

Wiki states it was an ankle injury to Shields. It would appear both Wood and Shields wanted to play the final, but Shields deferred to US tennis officials, who seem to have been desperate to win back the Davis Cup.
