Witter vs Gavin
Morning folks!
Tonight's fight at York Hall, Bethnal green for the British welterweight clash should be an interesting fight. I will lay my stall out now and say I'm routing for witter. I have always wanted him to do well but have since his loss to Bradley been frustrated by him. That was his big night, live on itv, his potential step board to a fight with hatton and he blew it. I don't want to take anything away from Bradley as we know what a special talent he is. Witter fights in the switch hitting ingle gym style that once I found refreshing and now just slightly annoying. Witter was then again disappointing against Alexander and Father Time appeared to have caught up with him. This was compounded by his prize fighter final loss against fighters who a few years before wouldn't have been fit to lace his gloves. I don't know why I like witter, most interviews he comes across cringe worthy but I guess I dislike Gavin more. At least witter lives and breathes boxing and I'm hoping that he can have a few more defences of the famous Lonsdale belt and maybe a go at the European before calling it a day. He can be proud that he held the WBC light welter weight belt.
Gavin has all the talent and no respect for himself or the sport. I might be proved wrong and he has settled down but he seems to be throwing away his obvious talent. From being the amateur world light weight champion to weight problems to his seemly half hearted attempt in the pros. I hope witter (annoying as his is!) the dedicated pro shows a last flash tonight.
Thoughts gentlemen?

Re: Witter vs Gavin
As a Sheffield lad I also have a soft spot for Witter but I belive youth will be served in this one and am rooting for Gavin to prevail. Like yourself his lack of focus and discipline has frustrated me hugely in the past but think the sport is better served tonight by seeing a 27 year old kid win than a 38 year old bloke, particularly one who can be painful to watch. Also don't think Witter has too much left at this stage, think if Gavin fights smart and applies consistent pressure we would see Witter being pulled out after the half way stage.

Should be a good fight and a tough test for Gavin who hasnt lived up to his hype yet. Unusual for a fight of this calibre to be on a Thursday! After 2 nights of Cup football dont think the Mrs will be too happy with me hogging the TV again!

Re: Witter vs Gavin
If Gavin is operating at two thirds of his potential he'll stop Witter by hook or crook (I think Jeff's call of a corner retirement is a good shout), but it's difficult to know which Gavin will turn up. Even if he does have another off night, he'll still take a decision but this is the kind of fight he should be winning in emphatic style at this stage of his career.
I still have doubts as to whether he's even a genuine Welterweight in any case; he looks a wee bit fleshy at 147 lb and I think if he was training in a manner befitting such a touted prospect he'd be campaigning at ten stone without too much bother. He's had some very difficult personal problems, as we all know, but the history books won't show that if his career turns out to be the disappointment which it's threatening to be.
Still, natural Welter or not, he should have too much for Witter at this point. I'll confess I haven't seen Witter since 'Prizefighter' but I remember being alarmed at how much he'd regressed as a boxer. Gavin to force Witter to quit in his corner after seven or eight rounds.

Re: Witter vs Gavin
Bit harsh on Frankie to say he doesn't respect the sport or himself. From what I've read he had some personal problems and boxing is not the type of sport to go into if you are not 100% focusssed. That he tried shows commitment to his fans, promoter and to a large extent to himself.
Anyway, he has shed loads of talent and I enjoy watching him fight. He should have too much for Witter and can see a 5 round stoppage. This will be the coming out party for Frankie and hopefully something to launch his career further. Pity he is in a stacked division. I can see him making LWW where I reckon he should compete in.

Re: Witter vs Gavin
I can see a very dirty, bitty, unremarkable fight ending controversially. Maybe a premature stoppage, or a cut or DQ, etc.
I don't have much time for Witter, really. Just never struck me as a character i could really get behind.
Hopefully, Gavin can push on now. Looking at his record he's actually not been as inactive as you might think.

If Gavin is as bad as he was against woodhouse he'll get beat here. witter doesn't have much left, though. Realistically gavin SHOULD win, get a feeling it will be an awful fight though. Has Witter ever been in an exciting fight?

Re: Witter vs Gavin
I think Witter is too far gone to pose any type of threat. He's looked dreadful in his last few fights. Simply awful in prizefighter.

Re: Witter vs Gavin
I got Gavin UD, but wouldn't be surprised if Witter quits late on. Witters best bet is to smother Gavin all night and take it to the cards. Otherwise Gavin should win handidly

Re: Witter vs Gavin
i won a lot of money backing witter at 7/2 to beat colin lynes this year. those odds were crazy and i thought witter should have been favourite. to be honest he boxed really well for 7 or 8 rounds, but tired very badly and looked awful towards the end. witter is 7/2 again tonight, but it doesnt look particularly generous this time. he might do well for a few rounds and i think gavin will struggle to land on him early. but witter will be constantly trying to reserve energy and might well get stopped on his feet later on.

If Witter's in survival mode he could lose by a wide margin. If he comes to fight, as I think he might, I can see him being stopped midway through.

Re: Witter vs Gavin
Gavin is a pretty accurate puncher but despite his record of 10 KO's in 13 wins I don't think he carries too much power, at least not at welter, and accumulates damage. While witter is past it and tired late vs lynes, gavin won't be landing flush too many times tonight so he may not stop him
Gavin is 27 and needs to get a serious move on so if he can't beat Witter with a bit to spare he won't ever make world level and based on the woodhouse fight he could struggle tonight

I believe in Frankie. As WHU said, very accurate puncher. May not go all the way but should make a decent living out of it.

Re: Witter vs Gavin
im looking forward to this one. witter is definately coming to win and even at this stage of his career is the biggest test gavin has had. i think we will find a lot out about gavin tonight, and wether hes good enough and commited enough to be world class.

Can't watch it sadly, working... I would hope for Gavin to go back down to a LWW as I think he's best suited there.

Re: Witter vs Gavin
Gavins face markin up quite early. Witter forcing the pace and movin Gavin back. Gavin a little frustrated with Witters jab. 2-0 to witter
Re: Witter vs Gavin
Gavin having a slow start while witter looks pretty sharp but neither is landing anything telling like the commentators would have you think

2-1 Witter at the moment. Witter looks pretty sharp but he might fade later on, looks tired already in between rounds

Re: Witter vs Gavin
3-0 witter. Gavin needs to force the pace here. He's too easy to hit with the jab
Re: Witter vs Gavin
Doesn't matter anyway. Gavin will win on the cards regardless. Warren will have the fix well and truly on
Re: Witter vs Gavin
He's not getting caught too often with the jab, it's that he isn't landing enough himself with his own jab
Gavin needs to up the pace so witters reflexes, which are quicker than Gavin's, slow down and gavin can beat him at his own game
2-1 witter, 1 tied round

3-1 witter. Too much spoilin from witter but gavin seems to be runnin out of ideas. Witter is too awkward at the minute

2-1 Witter and 1 even. Cagey 4th that

Re: Witter vs Gavin
Suppose that's right WHU, but witter is followin up with an uppercut etc then holdin. Gavin should be first to follow up the jab. Gavin looks slow as hell. 4-1 witter for me
Re: Witter vs Gavin
5th for Gavin. 2-2-1 expect Gavin to come on in later rounds

Regardless of what happens...this fight is terrible haha. Gavin once again looking nowhere near the level he's supposed to be. Witter is finished!

It doesn't really say a lot for Gavins future chances at this stage though. I think a little more was probably expected of him. Kind of a no win situation fight

I've stopped scoring cuz witter is never making it too the 12th round. He's completely spent

I can't blame Gavin. Witter would make Floyd look bad.

4-2-1 Gavin. Witter is very tired and Gavin is starting to come on well. If he sinks them into the body he might force a late tko

Re: Witter vs Gavin
Witter is just holding now whereas in the earlier rounds he would work then hold
Gavin has the momentum atm and at witters age I don't know f he can get a 2nd wind
Witter trying to buy second from a light shot behind the head
