Can I ask how that works? Did Scholes win a Ballon D'Or? Did he even get in the top 3?

If Jack Wilshere was already better at the age of 18 then a peak Paul Scholes who is rated as one of if not THE greatest midfielder in Premier League History then Wilshere should go on to become one of the greatest in the world. Ronaldo was not rated better then the likes of Giggs, Ljungberg, Pires at the age of 18 and look where he is now, so going by that Wilshere should be the best player easily.

I don't get it. Why is winning the Ballon D'Or the outcome when Scholes was not even close to winning it. Gerrard and Lampard won it, so by your argument, they are both better than Scholes

There must be millions of players who are better than people who didn't win the Ballon D'Or, who don't then go on and win it.

God you United fans getting really narky when someone else suggests someone is better than Paul Scholes. When Wilshere won Young Player of the Year two years ago, my opinion is he was playing better football than I have ever seen Paul "all I really did was score goals" Scholes play.

I forget all of Scholes' Player of the Year awards

Paul Scholes never won it but if Wilshere is already much better at 18 he should destroy him.

Yes I know but Afro said he is better then Scholes but as he hasn't been playing for almost two years we have to go back to the last time he did which was 18 thats why I said an 18 year old Wilshere is better then Scholes.
Ah, I see, valid point

You're assuming Paul Scholes was close to and good enough to make the top 3. I am stating facts that he was never close, nor good enough to be considered. The fact that both Lampard, Gerrard, Beckham, Shearer and Owen all made the top 3 and even peak Scholes did not, says it all.

My rating of Paul Scholes is not as high as yours, thats the difference.

Wilshere will go on to be a lot, lot better, and I would not be surprised to see him in the top 3 of Ballon D'Or.

It's not just my opinion, it's fact that the Football Writers and coaches from around the world never voted Scholes as good as you are making out.

It must just be United supporters who watch football and the rest do not.

And United fans call Liverpool arrogant

Thank you Olly clap You'd have thought Scholes was Xavi or something

So someone being better than Scholes doesn't necessarily mean that they have to go on and be the best player in the world.

That is fair enough though Marky. I always maintain that it is close, so can understand if someone thinks the opposite.

He said footballer

You're right Wilbraham doesn't qualify for the title of footballer. The title of GENERAL GOD is more fitting.

My second choice is Juan Mata. After seeing him live, I dont think I have seen anyone with a better first touch and vision. And I have seen Lee Croft play.

I think Viva knows that I watch a lot of football, and he also regularly asks me my opinion on players, so he clearly classes me as a good judge of player.

I think this is why they are so defensive over my PaulScholes+ > Peak Real Paul Scholes

Scholes isnt the messiah that you guys make him out to be tbh.
Which guys?
All ive said is Wilshire is not as good as your make out. Especially Jafros statement from last week.
Wilshire > At his peak Scholes.
Thats just preposterous!!
Scholes is old now and can still put a Poopie in. At his peak he was better than Wilshire is now or at the age of 18.
Wilshire has a lot of talent. Being out for 17 months has not helped him. He has a lot of work to do now if hes going to be the star was touted to be. To say hes better than at his peak Scholes is an overstatment. Maybe it was taken out of context, I dont know. Either way its wrong. But he has the potencial to be better, will he? Time will tell. Without football for 17 months I have nothing to judge him on recently to say yes he will be better. So currently I say no.

Afro where do you rate Paul Scholes?

I rate him very highly, I see him as the best midfielder to have played in the premier league and top 3 CM in my generation.

Even the most biased person who hates Scholes would have him in top 10 CM, so tell me why cant Wilshere reach the levels of Messi and Ronaldo if you claim him to be better at the age of 18 then Paul Scholes at his peak.

No but I think Olly's point is you lot make the idea of anybody approaching Scholes' level sound as impossible as Olly binning his shrine to Holt.

Hes not an all time great and in contention for best player ever.

The best players I have seen live are these in order;

Luis Suarez, Juan Mata, Robin Van Persie, Ryan Giggs, Steven Gerrard.

Based on what I have seen live and how they performed on the times I have seen them.

I'm not saying that, Zidane is almost as good as Scholes and so is Xavi they not far off. But to claim an 18 year old who plays for a team that regard 4th place as an achivment better then a peak Paul Scholes is a big fat joke.

Right, fishingrodsmiley to one side, I rate Scholes as a really good player over a long period.

I certainly don't put him as the best CM to have played in the Premier League. I have Vieira, Keane, Gerrard, Essien (from a few years back), Alonso ahead of him.

All my statement is, is that in the season when Wilshere won YPotY, he was playing better football than I have ever seen Scholes play. I would put all of the above player, ahead of Wilshere at their peak and none of them have won a Balloon Door.

I also think to be better than Scholes at his peak, at 18, doesn't mean you have to go on to Messi levels in the future. i think there is a big space in between that he will comfortably fall into. However, if he stays fit and continues his YPotY ability, then he could easily be in the Top 3

Fabregas played for a 4th place team at 18 and he was/is better than Paul Scholes, so its not impossible

That's another CM to add to my list btw

I was gonna highlight that bit too. Come on Viva, Scholes > Wilshere you could argue, but not Scholes > Zidane.

I'll try to be honest as I can from the players you listed above the only one I would say that has a case is Vieira but I seem to remember Scholes 85% of the time had the better of Vieira and made him look like a fool but thats not to say head to head is the way to say whos better.

The games against Barca Wilshere looked really good and I remember myself and Andy saying he is better then Henderson and that we may finally have an English player that can be a world class player. You have your opinion on Wilshere but I think Scholes has played better Football at much higher level (Playing for a team that fights for titles rather then a team who fights for 4th, constantly playing a higher level of teams in Europe and having a lot more pressure win)

We both have different ratings of Scholes Afro thats what it is but I do feel that if a player is better then Scholes at the age of 18 he has to be really really special and I would expect him to become one of the all time greats.

If you could have Messi or Zidane in your side, who would you pick?

I'd take Zidane almost every time. Phenomenal footballer.
