You're right re. the spaghetti, butter and TK. It's not great but it's not as bad, nutritionally, as is being made out. As I said before, if they ate that occasionally, what's the issue? If they eat it every day? That's another matter.

The Hakka is all about intimidation. Why should they get everything their own way in an away game, they should know the home crowd is hostile. It's not their anthem, its just a dance.

Re: Another Drive4show 'Anything goes' thread
The Kiwis are much too sensitive about the Hakka. The opposition are expected to stand and watch and be intimidated. If the opposition turn their back and ignore it, it's disrepectful. If you line up and advance on them, it's disrespectful. I think that if they want to do it - fine, but don't expect any special treatment from your opponents.

The Hakka is the single most stupid thing I've ever seen in a sporting context.
I'd just turn my back, do my shoe laces or something like that.
It would be like having to watch the Irish do a jig or the English a Morris Dance.

Would be funny and about the only defiance they can muster on a rugby pitch.

I remember a couple of years ago they had an horrendous throwback to some historic war with England depicted on the pitch before the match. Shiversomely embarassing, mind you, Rugby is a pretty silly game, so I suppose silly things like that and the Haka go hand in hand.

Re: Another Drive4show 'Anything goes' thread
btw the haka is not a rugby union thing at all.
the haka is performed before many sports(even a play in london!!)
It is performed when there is a high proportion of Mauris competing(or in the plays case performing!)
However the IRB have attached themselves to this HAKA and made it almost protected- as they see value in the all black brand!!
The IRB is the organisation that has an issue with challenges- The kiwis themselves are not allways sensitive about it!!
The haka originally was a challenge for visiting tribes to there tribe. its history is nothing to do with rugby, but everything to do with mauri culture!

The haka is cool, most scary when performed by Lomu! What an animal he was, 19 stone and could run 100m in about 10.5 seconds, imagine getting hit by that!

Scrums and Lineouts are really pointless though these days and do absolutely nothing for the game and really need to be addressed. I haven't seen a straight put in for years, while the ballerina line outs are just laughable (and quite gay)
I prefer Rugby players* and supporters as people to Footballers and Football fans though.
* Chris Ashton on the other hands is a complete w@nker.

Re: Another Drive4show 'Anything goes' thread
Compared to how they used to be Diggers, they are. When I was at school if a put in went in squint the scrum started again. What's the point in a scrum if the opposing hooker doesn't have the slightest chance of getting the ball?
Might as well just give them the ball and carry on League style. As for line outs, just make them jump, then the best athletes get the ball, not the ones who can be lifted highest. Perhaps not pointless, but certainly stupid.

Re: Another Drive4show 'Anything goes' thread
Lots of penalties are win by dominating the scrum Super, basically if you control the scrum and the line out chances are you are going to win the match so they can't be pointless.
From what I've seen so far this Sumer the refs aren't doing loads of scrum resets which is good news.

I don't deny the point of them, but the squint put ins don't do the game much good and the balletic line outs look stupid.

Re: Another Drive4show 'Anything goes' thread
Don't care myself. Much as I respect the ABs for their rugby, I now thoroughly loathe the haka. The ABs use it as a psyche up but no matter what the opposition do, the ABs often take offence. Standing too close - disrespect. Not having the proper expression while haka being performed - disrespect. Etc etc. STFU!Doon the Water wrote:How do you English guys feel about the 'Fans' singing over the Haka.

Personally, I didn't like the singing over it but I've heard worse - usually from Murrayfield when a place kicker is lining a shot up at goal .

Says the fount of rugby knowledge. If you think scrums have no use in the game, you're sadly mistaken. Lineouts ditto. I take the point about a lack of genuine competition for the ball in both set pieces but to say they have no value is OTT.super_realist wrote:Scrums and Lineouts are really pointless though these days and do absolutely nothing for the game and really need to be addressed...

Re: Another Drive4show 'Anything goes' thread
It does look to me as though currently the scrum and the lineout are retained more for tradition than original purpose. If there is a lack of genuine competition for the ball in both lineouts and scrums then what is the point of them? If rugby needs a restart mechanism with a heavy bias for one side over another why not give a throw in/free pass? This would be quicker and would add to the flow of the game and in my opinion would not be any more penal to the side without possession.
If it needs to be a competitive mechanism with both sides in with a realistic chance of gaining possession then it does look like the rules need a tweak (or overhaul?) to allow meaningful competition. If the laws are fine (and I am admittedly weak on what the laws actually are!) and it is the on field application of them then the officials may need to crack down.

Re: Another Drive4show 'Anything goes' thread
the biggest concern in RU at present is who hard it is to ref.. There is so much going on that the ref cant spot..
What teams have to do is work out how the ref is reffing on the day and switch up there game plan if needed..
The fact we all have hd tellys with rewind features with different views of incidents means we get to see better than the ref- the talking points that surrond decision making go on for ever!! think football decsions times 1000!!
league makes for an easier game to ref, but all the same Union is the monkey nuts.. I love it for all its flaws!

Re: Another Drive4show 'Anything goes' thread
Getting rid of scrums and lineouts would mean that the players would all begin to morph into the same physique.
The scrums mean you still get a couple of giants and the front row guys, that has an efect on how the whole game is played rather than simply having a load of 6 2" athletes on the pitch. It means you have a chance of a wing or a centre being up against a prop so the game should be more open.
That to me makes the game a whole lot more interesting than league where I admire the athleticism but find the spectacle incredibly dull.

You do have to remember the side that has the put in has won that right after an infringement, the scrum put in is meant to benefit them.

Hit the nail on the head. There's nothing wrong with the laws re. lineouts and scrums except for some reason the officials don't officiate them properly. Some of the scrum feeds these days go straight into the second row. Ridiculous.Roller_Coaster wrote:...If the laws are fine (and I am admittedly weak on what the laws actually are!) and it is the on field application of them then the officials may need to crack down.

Re: Another Drive4show 'Anything goes' thread
True, but they have the benefit of the feed and the hooker (laughable term these days given they don't have to hook at all!) on the same side as the scrum-half putting in would know when the ball's coming in whereas the opposition hooker doesn't have that advantage. Even in the 'old days' strikes against the head were rare and the put in was a lot straighter than now.Diggers wrote:super_realist wrote:NOt saying to get rid of them, just put a straight put in to the scrum. I think to make scrums more competitive they should tie a strong rubber band around the hookers ankles.

Brilliant, I actually like McDowell, just think he dresses poorly and looks a lot older than he is and is a bit portly for such a young man.
He's dead right though, shouting Mashed Potato wasn't funny the first time, it isn't funny after the millionth time.
Snipers in the trees (with British marksmen obviously) should be employed to take out the perpetrators.

Cruising round the web getting ready for my holiday and found they've made a movie of the Bethany Hamilton story (aspiring pro surfer, lost her arm in a Tiger shark attack 8-9 years ago - on a break i Kauai where I'll be surfing on non golf days during the holiday). Not an oscar winner by any means but....if ever you're faced with with a hurdle in life that you think you cant beat....go watch the film, it's called Soul Surfer, it's not Hollywood schmuck it IS actually a true story and yes, she still competes today. Her best friend has turned into a complete hottie and pro surfer too, check her out on youtube.

OK but hugely over-priced and I thought you criticised Nike for lack of innovation? I like a clean blade as much as the next saddo but I'm not sure they offer a great deal over, say, some Titleist MBs.super_realist wrote:http://www.united-golf.com/irons.html

Wow, shock announcement as Osbourne plans to build 100 new schools ..... funded by slashing social care, Police and flood defence budgets.
Clearly they never taught the expression robbing Peter to pay Paul at Eton. Lets just shuffle the problems around rather than trying to solve them.
And I guarantee half the schools wing get built or will be free school funding which cause more problems than they solve.
