First topic message reminder :

Bit of a running thread we could hopefully keep going....

Meet Joe Black - Never seen it before, thought it was great but maybe a bit too long at 3 hours. One of Brad Pitt's best performances.

Source Code - Bit of a head f**k, won't lie to you i didn't fully understand the ending.

I have watched a few recently with various results....

Dinner for Schmuks - Brilliant - Steve Carrell at his best, The scene with the Mouse and the cat was hilarious.

The Chaperone - Easily one of the worst films i have ever seen, Predictable, Poorly Acted (Im looking at you HHH) and just down right turd!

& Last night i had the poor fortune to watch The Inbetweeners Movie....

This one is a bit of an enigma to me, cos i didnt find it particularly funny, not sure if this was the film or the hype surrounding it. Not a bad film, and not a bad round up to, the far superior, Episodes/Series, but i just didnt really laugh much. I will have to watch it again when it comes out on Blu-Ray but as it stands i was very disappointed.

I watched Hanna the other night;

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0993842/

Enjoyed it. Saoirse Ronan is fantastic as the title character. It's a strange film though, real mesh of genres. Highly stylised in parts; real confluence of genres. It could be uneven but it all works fairly well! Not as good a film as Atonement maybe but really watchable.

I read quite a lot in the build up to it in Empire magazine but it kind of disappeared from the public eye very quickly.

It was directed by someone [semi]famous wasnt it?

I could take or leave Source Code, thought it was kinda predictable and got a bit bored with the same scene beginning. It was like Groundhog Day with bombs

I went to see Cowboys and Aliens. Was expecting so much more considering it had Sam Rockwell was in it and Jon Favreu was behind it, but dudn't really live up to my hype of it

I watched "Friends with Benefits" last night, not bad, bit of a chick flick, but one of the better ones. Mila Kunis is gorgeous when you can see past the fact she was nobbed by Macaulay Culkin!

Caught "Robin & the 7 Hoods" on Saturday. Forgot how good it is: terrific cast-Sinatra, rest of Rat Pack, Crosby, Peter Falk relishing a comic Chief Hood role, Barbara Rush; two or three marvellous songs.

They don't make 'em like that any more!

went to watch Apollo 18 last night.

I was so annoyed because they have a really good idea for a movie in that it was a mission to the moon that was covered up for the reasons that we see in the movie, yet the execution was absolutely awful. Any idiot could have made that movie better , 80 minutes of my life I'm never getting back

On a more positive note I watched Cinderella man tonight....WOW!!!

I watched that and really enjoyed it, I hadn't seen that musical before. Love the song about "Mr Booze" and that whole sequence. You're right they don't make them like that anymore. If they remade it, it would be shiiit.

Saw a great documentary called “Taxi to the darkside” about torture in Afghan prisons. Very good stuff, really sad though.

Started watching Troll hunter last night but fell asleep. It looked good though, it’s a Norwegian monster movie. Looks like a good version of Cloverfield.

Post by legendkillar Tue 20 Sep 2011, 12:19 pm

After some disappointing films such as Cherry Tree Lane and The Veteran, I recently watched Bonded By Blood. I tend to find with stories 'based' on true events can be hit and miss. The plot itself was good. I felt of the dialogue to be sloppy and somewhat amateur given the environment. A drug dealer knocking the door of a supplier who is banging your wife and yet you manage to fob off a drug fuelled lunatic with scared jumble. That doesn't work for me at all. I felt that even the climax of the film was again sloppy. Again I think it showed a lack of research as I can't imagine the main antagonists being the main players on the drug scene. I did expect outside interest. I have seen documentaries around the murders in Kent in 1995 and I can say that they are even scared of linking anything to victims that night and to the people that were 'charged' who are believed to be innocent. again the supplier didn't really portray that type of fear.

I watched Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides

Initial reaction after the 2 hour marathon......What could've been.

It is story-telling in it's weakest form. After the cull in World's End of some of the main characters like Davy Jones, James Carrington, Will Turner, Calypso, Elizabeth Swann, The Flying Dutchman, The East India Trading Company. It leaves a whole new world opened and un-tapped in the previous films which leads to such weak story-telling. There is so much that can be achieved with this franchise. Harry Potter, Star Wars 2 very long Franchises which was able to the keep the characters within the storyline, knowing when to introduce them and when to withdraw them. Had Blackbeard been mentioned only by name in the other 3 films or even the Spanish or Jack's former love interest in any of the previous 3 films or a brief cameo would've made it easier to accept a 4th installment. It works in reverse too with even a mention of the Pirate Lord or the Flying Dutchman would've had me interested in what could and can be with this story.

Again Johnny Depp is fantastic as Captain Jack. Even the mutiny scene is Jack at his best. Ian McShane was brilliant as Blackbeard. He really did capture the fear that goes with the character. Penelope Cruz I felt had so much to live up to and was limited as I am not sure about the character and that the portrayal was weak as she tried to be emotionally flat. If you take the chemistry between Jack and Elizabeth Swann, even though they started off as strangers and as the film trilogy grew, even though Jack and Elizabeth had moments of great chemistry, both were aware of what they wanted and were willing to cast the other aside if needed. Didn't get that feeling from Cruz.

If there is to be sequels, they need to deliver big time!!

I agree with this, I mean there's only Captain Jack, Barbossa and Gibbs in terms of returning characters and The Black Pearl is rarely mentioned, could really have been a completely different franchise of pirate films. The ending to the film suggested to me the next one could be better.

That was the improved script version, just imagine what the original script was like.

Grown ups annoyed me bits of it were funny but I didn't see the point of having Chris Rock in the film and not let him have any funny parts. His character was awful never suited him at all.

Just had a look through Sandlers films post 2000 and there's only two I could say I enjoyed actually sitting through. The two films are "Reign Over Me" and "Anger Management", so on that basis I stand by my statement that pretty much all his work has been awful.

Didn't do anything for me sadly and found it quite boring to sit through, it's not his worst film since 2000 by a long stretch which says quite a lot about his other movies.

I've liked some of his stuff but when you've made Happy Gilmore and Billy Madison early in your career it's always going to be downhill from then on.

A bit like a band who's first couple of albums are classics the rest never seem to match up.

I can see what you are saying and while Happy Gilmore, Waterboy, Wedding Singer etc were good enjoyable films they are hardly masterpieces that he shouldn't be able to replicate to some degree.
