Meet Joe Black - Never seen it before, thought it was great but maybe a bit too long at 3 hours. One of Brad Pitt's best performances.
Source Code - Bit of a head f**k, won't lie to you i didn't fully understand the ending.

Just watched Lawless:
Very good performances from all the lead (male) actors. I thought it managed to get the level of violence about right - it was gory, but not gratuitously so.
However the film IMO suffered from simply not having an interesting enough story to tell (I realise it's based on real life) - basically your criminals are taking over our patch and we don't like. With that in mind, the scripwriters could have opted for an attempt at looking at the theme of prohibition and the inevitable criminality, how the local population saw things, etc. These themes were touched upon, but only very briefly, and you felt almost by accident. As a result the film was really just a generic gangster movie, pitting "our" bad guys (the good guys) against their ones.
Decent entertainment, but overall a bit disappointing I thought.

Watched Warrior last night, good film - great performance from Tom Hardy but he really showed up his 'brother' in the film. Still a good story, even if it had a bit of 'Rocky cheese' it did help twinge the heartstrings though.
He beefed up a lot for the part, fairplay to him. Another good performance from Nick Nolte as well.

I heard didn't want to make the Stratham film too chavy, otherwise they would have called it Innit...
Yeah Warrior is good fair play - it's the acting from Hardy and Nolte that makes it though!

Re: Last Film Watched Thread
Wow haven't posted here for while. I shall start with what I remember seeing.
Saw Bourne Legacy. I thoroughly enjoyed it. How they constructed the story was some very clever writing. There is not as many fight scenes as you would expect given the trailer solely focuses on that aspect. How they connect it back to story of the Bourne Ultimatum. It is good for those who enjoyed the the Bourne trilogy.
Also went and saw Dredd. I wasn't tempted originally, but once I saw Alex Garland had written the screen play I was all for it. It is a very good film. It really does feed from the comics and the good news is that Urban does not remove the helmet!! How does this compare to Marvel and DC films? Well in short it isn't going to have as much depth storyline wise. don't expect to learn much about the character which is Dredd. That is what's so unique about it. It is not trying to cram so much into it. Yes Ma has a little 5 minute summary of her character's past, but other than that it focuses on the story. There is potential for sequels, though it would look unlikely because I think the sequel would need to be 2+ hours and not sure many fans of the Dredd comics would like that. It is a good watch for comic book fans.
Hunger Games. Hmmmmmm. When I ordered it and saw the write up. Teenagers fighting for survival and it was a 12 rating. It was difficult to feel well up for it. I looked at the cast and was sceptical. How can they pull this off? Look at previous book adaptations. It was more Twilight Saga than Bourne Saga. I watched it and was surprised. The notion and idea was just brilliant. I was so enthralled by it. I loved it. Woody Harrelson is brilliant in it. I would recommend it for them who like far out ideas.
Avengers Assembled. Yes I bought the DVD. The 3D version. I can't say what hasn't already been said. It delivers on the blockbuster element. It is the must have for 3D fans.

Legend Killa, how does Dredd compare to the original film? As I really didn't like the original film, but do like a lot of what I've seen from Alex Garland (and the novel The Beach is meant to be good as well).

Much better than Stallone version. That was utterly crap and Rob Schneider was totally worthless and un-necessary.
It is literally a blood fest in most scenes. True to the violent nature of some of the stories in the comics. The film was un-restricted and if you like your comic book films, I recommend it.

I watched Judge Dredd as a youngster and was entertained by the action and creative characters. Guess I still feel the same way about it. This remake hasn't appealed to me, the same way Total Recall hasn't.

Watched Ip Man and Ip Man 2 last night on Film4 as part of their martial arts season, not really a genre I've watched a lot of but have caught the end of Ip Man before so wanted to watch the whole film and it didn't disappoint really good fights and like the true story involved.

Yeah, you'd think people would be raving about it and critics would be speaking about if lots, but I've just heard good things about it from the people who've seen it, but not really any critics raving about it. Strange

I thought that half the point and his appeal is that Dredd is straightforward as a character - literally faceless, an uncompromising man of the law? Thought Urban completely got it, and did well with limitations on facial expressions and quite a few monosyllabic lines. Thirlby was also very good as Anderson I reckon - would like to see the film again in due course to compare the character at the beginning and the end of her harrowing assessment day!
If anyone is interested, I came across a web-comic providing more backstory for Ma Ma, including a certain... er... gruesome encounter with a former associate referenced in the film. No idea where I found it now, but I could try and locate it again.

Interesting concept I'll give it a go - but unfortunately I don't really like Horror films (they bore me) so can't really recommend one to you reliably. Though I do like the Dawn of the Deads and The Thing is a classic.

I would love for them to do a sequel with Judge Death. That would be awesome. I would actually buy the DVD. I saw it in 3D and it so enhanced the quality of it. Was is good is that the film was written by Garland and the film did have that 'Brit' feel to it. What was good was when the cadet read his mind and just said 'I sense rage'
Brilliant.

I made some more purchases, watched Leon couple nights ago. That was pretty good. A lot of bad guys in films these days must be based on Gary Oldman's character in that film.
I also watched This Is England last night because a few people had said it was good. What a senseless and crap film. I'm actually considering chucking the thing in the bin.

Agree Mystiroakey - I like this is england, and the acting is very good as is the way the violence is captured - but as you say it's a little bit directionless and lacking a really gripping story.

Leon is ace. Reno is the coolest assassin ever. I thought Bruce Willis in The Jackal took some beating, but Reno edges it everytime.
Oldman is brilliant. I think in The Fifth Element they try to resemble some of the charaterstics from his one in Leon, but they nearly manage it.

It was hardly violent. Anyone who isn't familiar with Thatcherism (which a lot of people are not) wouldn't have a clue why there was pictures of soldiers out in the Falklands. Awful film.
But if you want to see a good racist-themed film then nothing can beat American History X. It's violent, but actually has a good story and much better acting.

His part in Austin Powers was acceptable, probably because it was so short. The guy can't act at all. I will say, I enjoyed Step Brothers.

TBH though I didn't used to like Jim Carrey when he did all that Dumb and Dumber, Cable Guy and Liar Liar loud, physical comedy films either.
But I like both when they do more straighter, almost more sophisticated films (Jim Carrey in Eternal Sunshine and Number 23).

the vilolence in the scene when he batters milky is pretty strong. And possibly nup there with the curb scene in history X.
But it is abit chalk and cheese comparing them two films. Ones a low budget TV style movie and the other is a large budget with A listers..
Yes I agree History X has a great storyline. Not sure if one is more realistic than the other though

Definitely ounces of realism and maybe some life events in both movies. Probably not the curb stomp though, never heard of that before the film. I've watched documentaries on skinhead gangs and branches of the KKK. They don't really like each other because their laws usually differ. Also one gang lived on their own estate surrounded by fences and barbed wire, where they prepared for war as they put it. The violence and racism is very real.

Yep i am sure american history x potrays certain realism.
However This is england for me is a film about kids growing up in a time and not knowing where to turn. American history x is about real gang violence, and although a big fan maybe the ending is abit cliched

I think TIE and AHX portray the message that racism is the direct result of mis-informed prejudice and properganda in a small communities of people that can esculate into irreversable repercussions that destroy and change lives and those not directly affected by the actions and yet champion such causes avoid the actions they feel demonstrate their views. They were stark films which showed friends and families are destroyed as a result.

If you want to see a good film about skinheads and racism, then look no further than Romper Stomper staring Russell Crowe, great film

No can't stand any of his films like that - the ones I like are the Mask, Bruce Almighty and his more recent stuff (though haven't seen the Penguin film), ohh and Ace Ventura is alright, a bit cringeworthy though.
