Meet Joe Black - Never seen it before, thought it was great but maybe a bit too long at 3 hours. One of Brad Pitt's best performances.

There are, I think, 3 books in the Hunger Games series so I expect all of them to make it to film as the first one was pretty good and did very well

He does a good job in my opinion of not spoilnig anything, but probably a wise choice. I would definitely say it was worth watching, (obviously don't if you aren't into Sci-Fi films).

To summarise my review, an awesome film. Well worth it for anyone, not just fans of sci-fi.

Just saw taken 2. Most ridiculous film ever, it isnt supposed to be a comedy but everyone laughed through the whole thing. Although, if you've seen the first one, you shouldnt go into the cinema expecting realism, what everyone realyy wants to see is Liam Neeson kill or beat up everyone in sight, and it certainly achieved that.

Re: Last Film Watched Thread
Ridiculous is it? I'm not a fan of the humour they're putting into films these days. It's ridiculously unfunny. Hangover and A-team for example. I'll still see Taken 2 as I like watching Neeson beat up and kill everyone in sight. The only review I have got is that is was good but not as good as the first one. Besson has announced he will not be doing a 3rd instalment.
I re-watched Armageddon recently too. Great film, but could have been epic had it not been for Michael Bay. Imaginitive story but Bay's cheeseball ideas in some scenes nearly ruined it. Probably would have been a fail had it not been for Bruce Willis, he trully is a great actor.

Yes, liked it. Occurred to me that it's a slightly quirky film involving Bruce Willis travelling back in time from the future to prevent a disaster situation of sorts... but I enjoyed this one more than Twelve Monkeys.
Another odd coincidence that sprang to mind is that it features an actor who has played a Terminator (in the Sarah Connor Chronicles TV series), also known for having a penchant to travel through time - wonder if this was some kind of deliberate in-joke.
Never heard of the writer/director nor any of the production companies beforehand - if it's a debut for any of them, it's a pretty impressive one.

The Thing remake , wasn't as good as the Kurt Russell version but not bad really . I liked the way they didn't just copy it and that it leads into the Russell film

Re: Last Film Watched Thread
Been meaning to post on here - watched a film I'd never heard of the other night, got it on Lovefilm through the PS3 - God Bless America.
Sounds like a cheesy, overly-patriotic USA gumpf I know. But it's actually a film about a guy whose tired of all the reality TV and cheesy slogans, in offensive pop acts and people mindlessly laughing at other peoples stupidity, or people made to look stupid, that's on TV, and across all media these days. And he was sick of people only caring about getting the next gadget or shiny thing.
So, having been fired from his job because of sexual harrassment for buying a lonely receptionist a book, and tired of his inbred neighbours arguing about reality TV stars while neglecting their baby - he goes on a rampage to kill all these shallow, hateful, petty, mean people.
It's funny and scarily realistic even if it is very low budget.

Quasi amici is the Italian name of a French film. Don't know the English title but could be something like "almost friends". A good film about a black guy from the good getting a job as a helper for a rich paraplegic old man. The young black guy helps the old paraplegic rediscover his love for life through a variety of different "let your hair down" experienced. Good film, good acting too.

Yup. it's a classic take on pulp ficition and comic books. All the tough, gritty, white, working class American characters have to be Irish at heart.
I can't wait for the sequel, I think it's going to focus on Dwight (which to be fair, isn't an Irish name).

Re: Last Film Watched Thread
Yes, I'd heard that Sin City 2 was always intended to be based on the book "A Dame to Kill For" (being a story featuring Dwight and his [ex-] wife).
I think that's still the plan, although they've also said for a long time that a completely new story would also be included.
I'm definitely still interested, but enthusiasm has waned a bit given ridiculously long lead time and relatively poor quality of creative output from Frank Miller of late (thinking particularly of "The Spirit" film and "Holy Terror" book).

Yeah I like the 'A Dame to Kill for' story, I thought though that they were meant to be including some brief stories from other characters (or from other books based on other characters).
I know what you mean, I was really excited when I 1st heard about it, but has lessened since it's been dragging on, but then the same thing happened with the Hobbit (which dragged on a ridiculous amount) but now that people are begining to talk about it again and the release is coming up soon, my excitement is growning again!.
I'm not that big into comics and prefer Alan Moore to Frank Millar, though I do like the characters/world in Sin City.

Moore and Miller are both geniuses!
Not familiar with much of Moore's work to be honest, but I'd love to know if anyone recognises this movie-ish reference penned by him: "MIND THE ORANGES, MARLON!!!"
Amazing to think that the same person was responsible for side-splitting, utterly bonkers stories such as those and Watchmen...

Re: Last Film Watched Thread
I've read Watchmen and V for Vendetta at present, and hope to read The League of Extrondanairy Gentlemen soon (if the missus actually heeds my requests and buys it for my birthday).
Watchmen was amazing, even better than the film (which I loved) and asks very interesting questions about what is a hero? (is it the boy scout who never breaks the rules, even if sometimes he doesn't accomplish much because of it, or the crazy guy who hates evil and will do whatever he can to stop evil people, even if it means becoming one himself, the strategic one, who'll let individuals die so he can save the whole world, or the manic one whose seen that everyone is black and evil, and so is parodying them to display how bad the world is?)
It also asks questions of good intentions as well, and has a great story within a story, with a comic book a character is reading called the The Black Pearl (or something similar) which is very bleak but brilliant).
V for Vendetta is good, but nowhere near as good as the film (which is disappointing as I was expecting it to be even better). Is still very clever and is a good comment on the nations fear mongering papers, xenophobia and right wing governments.
Whats the quote from? I don't recognise it

Re: Last Film Watched Thread
It's from the 2000AD days. I'd highly recommend picking up a copy of the complete "D.R. and Quinch" if you can find a copy at a reasonable price. Perhaps juvenile, definitely extremely silly, but very funny. The quote is from "D.R. and Quinch Go To Hollywood", whereby the 2 eponymous anti-heroes come across a much-sought after film script when its writer suddenly dies. The title of the movie? Don't know, but I think the third word is "oranges", man...
A one-shot masterpiece by Moore I'd recommend is also with an ex-2000AD'er - Brian Bolland, perhaps best known for his work on Judge Dredd. "The Killing Joke" is a Joker story, featuring Batman (deliberate wording). To keep this semi-on topic, I think the filmmakers behind "The Dark Knight" took a look at this book as one of the best portrayals of the Joker out there. As far as I could tell, they only used one idea though (being that the Joker's actual origin could be any one of several possibilities).

I still feel as though there is just way to much going on. The viewer cant just chill out and enjoy the ride- The film was only done of the success of the other film and the director has just overloaded the film..

It was funny though and better than most comedies of this era.
I watched 'Horrible Bosses' at the weekend. It wasn't bad but tbh, never really made me laugh.

Of course, how could I forget Dwight's surname - you are of course right, very Irish.
Hartigan is my fav story as well, along with Marv's. I thought Sin City 1 did a decent amount on his story - though I haven't read the whole story.

I think that's the perfect description! It's a shame as there was a film out in the 90s along the same premise, I can't remember the name but think Kevin Spacey was the 'horrible boss' and drove his assistant to despair. From my memory it was much, much better, with a little bit darker humour than Horrible Bosses which seems like a lazy rehash.

Re: Last Film Watched Thread
been to see a few the last few days
Sinister - despised it, the bumps are far too predictable that they're more funny than scary
Looper - I really enjoyed this, liked the story and was entertained throughout
Killing them softly - brilliant, absolutely superb. There's one particular scene between Pitt and Gandolfini in it and Gandolfini just draws you in, great acting and great movie
The Campaign - won't be everyone's cup of tea but I laughed pretty much throughout, some good gags in there

looper- good film. But i was expecting more
- Spoiler:
- the plot holes just drove me mad. the film got away with explaining that it would take 'all day' to explain' its time travel method- i need more closure- more explaination- at the end of the day if he killed himself early - he wouldnt be in the position in the field to die there anyway

Cheers Gazzy, really want to see Killing Them Softly and also want to see Looper, which I don't expect to be amazing but a good viewing none the less.
Saw The Expendables 2 last night - amazing that they can go even further into the all out action movie/no plot type of film thatn the 1st one! Was good and enjoyable, lots of tongue in cheek, but was funny seeing (senator) Arnie, Bruce Willis, Stallone, Dolph, Chuck Norris and JCVD all in the same film.
Was a good way to waste an hour and a half though

I don't quite understand your issue with that "plot hole" mainly because I don't see it as a plot hole.mystiroakey wrote:looper- good film. But i was expecting more
- Spoiler:
the plot holes just drove me mad. the film got away with explaining that it would take 'all day' to explain' its time travel method- i need more closure- more explaination- at the end of the day if he killed himself early - he wouldnt be in the position in the field to die there anyway

Re: Last Film Watched Thread
ok well i do. explain to me why it isnt if you want a debate. Infact i could list loads. The film is kinda lazy thats all. But still good
another one below

- Spoiler:
- by chopping of the limbs of the present day looper at the start of the film- it did have a brilliant affect on the film however there is no way that the future looper would have been in the same place at the same time had he had no limbs.. now if the film had suggested a fate theory (what ever you do you cant change a thing)them maybe i would be more inclined not to pick at it as much but as it is i was questioning it through out, but i still would have because of the ending- there was no fate affect due to the hot mum living after he shot himself(when he was alive she was dead)- so things can and do change in the films theory

- The issue is in my opinion, that if they go into it so that for this example they cut all of Seth's limbs off thus changing his whole life but if Seth has no limbs future Seth obviousl then has no limbs meaning he would never have been able to run away (if he had even made it 30 years) from current Seth, which then changes the whole film again as Seth wouldn't be losing his limbs because future Seth would be dead instead of running free, but then if he didn't lose his limbs he would be capable of running away again, meaning present him loses limbs meaning future him can't run away.

- Spoiler:
- Its certainly one of them films which is kinda basic on the surfice- but when you try and look deeper there seems to be no logic..IMO, even though there is no science or theory to time travel I still want the film to follow a set patern and not contradict it self..

- Pretty much like my answer to the other potential plot hole, up until those few seconds Joe seemingly had never considered taking his own life and the reason he did was because future him was about to kill the woman (can't remember her name) which he believed to be the cause of the "Rainman" in the first place. So to "save the world" or the woman he loves, he takes his own life and prevents future him killing the woman, however had this had your fate effect he would never have had the motivation for killing himself or even being in that field at that time.
