calzaghe
First topic message reminder :
Calzaghe said "I'll never fight washed up fighters like Roy Jones."
12 months later he was in the ring with a washed up fighter caleed Roy Jones.
So why did he choose to fight him having publicly said he was past his best? money? or the hope that a big name like jones no matter how past his best he is will look good.

Re: calzaghe
I see that as a very tough fight for Calzaghe Shah. The fact that Calzaghe said Pascal wasn't world class leads me to believe Pascal might just be able to get Calzaghe out early.

Re: calzaghe
It's funny because at one time I was Calzaghe's biggest detractor....
Yet now I have a grudging admiration for him....
1. The Hoppo win has improved over time...
2. He beat some quality fighters.....Eubank, Reid......etc
3. Mitchell and Lacy were world class wins.
4. Ten years at the top is a great achievement.
5. He retired unbeaten.........
6. Unlike Froch he always found a way to win..
7. He stayed retired..........
Time will be good to Joe Calzaghe...............
As for the thread fighters always say "things"

Or will it?
Unlike Froch, there were a number of fighters he could have fought..

Anyway, both are exceptional fighters, the run of opponents that Froch has had is pretty much unmatchable. Calzaghe while having a lot of talent, never pushed himself to fight the best. If they had fought I would back Calzaghe to win on work rate but it would be close, and by no means clear cut.

Re: calzaghe
Pascal beats Kessler 99 times out of 100 and gets Calzaghe out of there early, I just don't see it myself and seems an attempt to add more shine to Frochs win, lest we forget this is the same Pascal who was twice outclassed by a 46 year old Hopkins.

Re: calzaghe
Again put the cr@p aside, facts remain, Calzaghe beat an unbeaten Kessler while Froch was beaten by an older version.
Both are outstanding fighters even if they aren't technically brilliant boxers.
When considering their styles those two sharing a ring would have been a contender for fight of the modern century.

Re: calzaghe
i had froch winning the kessler fight and dont hold much over him for it, styles make fights and all that (calzaghe struggled with reid). what gets me is the way people discount both fighters victories over certain fighters. you can only beat the person infront of you at on the night, and neither man had the advantage of retrospect, fighters like bute and lacy were probably the biggest perceived threats at the time and both champions stood up up against the odds (the whole of the us and some of the uk were sure lacy would win, and more than half of 606s, me included thought bute would be too good over the distance for carl). both men have great wins and calzaghes perfect record keeps him 2-3 places above froch in the british all time rankings at the moment but froch is 1-2 wins away, a step up in division would seal it.

Re: calzaghe
Calzaghe struggled with Reid? Your point is?
Reid was a good fighter when he shared a ring with Joe; the version that froch fought was finished.
Froch beat a poorer version of Reid than calzaghe beat, and Calzaghe beat a better version of Kessler than froch lost to.
As you say you can only beat the fighter put in front of you.... and froch failed twice.
IMO three times.

Re: calzaghe
The fact Froch has very little competition in the best of British stakes....makes him seem greater than he is.....
Maybe If a Saunders comes through or a Price/Fury then maybe people will be more realistic in their appraisals..
Fact is Kessler isn't really "WORLD" class at any other time...and froch was soundly beaten by Ward........
Bute being honest gets whacked out easily of Benn and Eubank..

Hadn't even considered bute against Benn or Eubank.
As you say he would get smashed

Re: calzaghe
Agreed.
Considering styles make fights and all, do you think bute would be a little too savvy/complicated for Collins?
Anyway, imagine a froch, calzaghe, benn, collins tourney.

Throw in Eubank as wellTheMackemMawler wrote:Anyway, imagine a froch, calzaghe, benn, collins tourney
If it was a league setup the final table in my opinion would finish like this:
1. Calzaghe
2. Collins
3. Eubank
4. Benn
5. Froch

Froch can beat them all on his night. To suggest otherwise just shows a dislike for, in my opinion.

I think Froch beats collins but losses to benn and is even against Eubank. It really is horses for courses in that tourney with each fighter beating a guy that a guy he lost to got beat by (..or something along those lines?)

Re: calzaghe
Other than Calzaghe who beats him 10 times out of 10 I agree. I think 7 times out of 10 though Collins and Eubank outpoint Froch. Benn just has a bit too much ammo for him although it would be a close one and a very entertaining fight no doubtLumbering_Jack wrote:Froch can beat them all on his night

when he signed for warren?
Right after he sighned for him. Thats why he was unable to fill in and sign the application forms for a passport. A shame really because he would of beaten Froch and all the opponents Froch has faced but chose not too.
