What else should be banned?
So long putters are to be banned on the contrived and jumped up charge that an anchored putt isn't a true 'golf stroke'.
What else needs to be banned from the game? (Mac, you aren't allowed to say the ball).

People that take it to seriously. Sort that think the club competition is the masters. Or anyone that calls a course a track.

Maybe not ban, but punish caddies who always stand between the TV camera and the hole.

Caddies lining up their players - especially prevalent on LPGA Tour. Isn't one of the skills of a professional golfer the ability to line themselves up?

I'd actually just ban Caddies. What's the point in them? Why not carry/push your own bag and make your own decisions. It's what we all have to do.
I've said it before but it would be good if one tournament of year the players had to carry all their own stuff and have no caddy.

Re: What else should be banned?
Caddies lining up - Totally agree, ridiculous imo. Have a look, make your call, play your shot. You're the player so it should all be your responsibility.
I think I also agree extending that to having caddies in the first place. You want 25 gloves and 4 sets of wets? You carry them. Stamina down the final stretch likely to come into play - take a pencil bag. Don't know what shot to play? Shouldn't be there in the first place.

Unfortunately here in Thailand we don't get to carry/push our own bags as caddies are mandatory on 99% of the courses even if you rent a cart (which is ridiculous). I'd like to see everyone given the choice.

Re: What else should be banned?
When you think about it, the origin of the caddy is that a gentleman never carried his own equipment around and it was only gentlemen that played golf. When they went shooting their man servant carried the guns, so why would they carry heavy equipment like golf clubs, balls etc (remember originally there was no limit on the number of clubs). I doubt that they recovered the ball from the hole or formed their own tee of sand either.
Since it is a throw back to the gentleman golfer, it should be banned. Make golf what it should be - an individual sport?

Plenty of sports have assistants. A boxer has his cornermen which is probably a good comparison as they assist and give advice.
F1 has loads of people helping the drivers.
I agree re not lining up the putts but hwo cares who carrys the bag ? Its like people who dont think a round of golf is a real one unless they carried.

Re: What else should be banned?
I think golf should be made more athletic, players should have to run between shots and the scoring system should be changed so that time taken to complete the round can be considered as part of the overall score. example: a level par round in 1 hour would be a world class score. In this way golf could be considered a true sport.

Navy, It's more the pointlessness of the ban, rather than what it's banning. I won't use a belly putter or the longer one because they feel horrible, it just seems a stupid thing to ban like banning gloves or wooly hats.

Golf buggies. And concrete cart paths should be dug up.
I like the walk... it's an integral part of the game. If you like zooming around in a buggy, why don't you just take up go-karting, and if you're too lazy to walk then give up golf!

Well for some it's not a pastime, it's (debatably) a sport or a game that requires a certain tempo and where waiting to take a shot for a long time spoils it. However, if you want to take your time then I'm fine with it as long as you call through those with less time to spend.

Re: What else should be banned?
I think it's more that on many occasions, especially competitions with 8 minute gaps it isn't realistic to expect to get round in less than 3.5 hours.

It's a classic course, more than difficult enough for any of us ordinary golfers. So what if a top pro could in theory (perfect conditions allowing) score 59? They should stop messing about with great golf courses.

Mmmm, I wonder who Macknocked-on actually is?
It's not that it's too easy in terms of the score it can produce. It's the sheer lack of interest, lack of danger and lack of tactic or course management on the majority of holes that requires changes to be made. It's simply too boring for major championships.

Re: What else should be banned?
I think there should be a maximum time limit (in comps) and if a group slips outside it and has a gap in front of them that they don't recover within 2 holes...2 penalty strokes, if they don't close the gap within 4 holes hook them off/DQ (the time limit would have to be reasonable though depending on the course - e.g. 4hrs for a 3ball)
Stuff to ban...buggies on courses/climates that don't need them

Anyone who shouts "Get in the hole". (Drag them out to some quiet part of the course and club them to death with a hybrid).
Premature depression of the index finger on a shutter release. (Removing the offending digit should help discourage this ignorant practice).
Cell phones....but that one is not confined to golf.

Re: What else should be banned?
American golf crowds and golfers touching fists (you're white and middle class for goodness sake) should certainly be banned.
Golf fans running up to and surrounding a golf ball following an errant shot.
Spectators dressing up as if they are going to play golf.
Shouting well out when a player simply gets it out of a bunker.

Super - American golf crowds? That's the LAST thing I would ban from the professional game.
It's the #1 reason why the professional golf game is so vibrant and the primary reason why the best golfers in the world are trying to play on our tour full time.
The "get in the hole" morons -- escort them off the course.

SR, with respect, I doubt people are switching from the European Tour in droves because of the vibrancy of the American Fans do you?
Might have something to do with the bags of money to be made.
I agree though that the GETINDAHOLE, MASHEDPOTATO, WOOHOO, YOUDAMAN, ONETIME, etc should be taken around the back and shot immediately though.
I'd also ban/shoot/poison any golfer who brings up religion in their acceptance speech.

Re: What else should be banned?
I think you miss Shotrock's point (possibly deliberately). What he is saying is the numbers of fans going through the turnstiles makes the game attractive to the both the sponsors and TV. It illustates how many people are interested in golf. There wouldn't be the money available if it weren't for the American fans.
